Are there any rivers on the map that look the right distance away from the coast for how long we traveled? Endurance rotates the map in all directions incase North wasnt the way he thought
Rotating the map, he realizes he wasn't holding it wrong because North is actually marked on the map and even then, it is near impossible for someone to hold the map wrong when they have the literal sea at a reference as well as an Orb of Direction. The only other river large enough to be on the map are the ones in the North west part of the continent, near King's Rock. However, that side has less mountains compared to the side the party washed up on. More importantly, when Endurance first checked his Orb after waking up, it pointed toward land as being north. If they had washed up on the North West beach, the orb would have pointed out to sea. So it seems unlikely that they washed up anywhere else besides the south east beach. Thus, the river in front of them is not supposed to be there and Endurance wasn't reading the map wrong.
(North being marked on the map doesn't mean it was right)
Endurance looks to see if the river looks naturally formed or not (nature 1) and to make sure it isn't a river mimic, casts mage hand and goes and slaps the river
(Even if the north was wrong, the only other place beach where you might have washed up on has a too different surrounding landscape to be where you were. So... you've been reading the map right and north is indeed north)
Varis glances at the map, then looks up and down the river. I don't think this is any stranger than those wolves we fought...does not quite bode well for us moving forward though. Hopefully those cities are still where they say they are. Only one way to find out eh? Varis will look for somewhere he can cross without getting wet.
The river is pretty wide. Doesn't seem like there will be any place that you can cross without jumping in. There might be a narrower section up or down stream but you can't see one and thus, can't be sure.
"hardy har har. The agreement was for weapons. I could make a case if there were something reasonably big and waterborne that I needed to ram maybe... But the postmaster of shadow (TM) does not appreciate being taken advantage of. That does not mean he can't be of some assistance though."
She throws her carved wooden bow into the river to see how far and in which direction it's carried, to get an idea of the current, before resummoning it in her hand.
You notice that there is a current in the river and it carries the bow southward. It may be a bit difficult to swim across the river but not impossible.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Endurance will walk up to the river, both swords drawn, and look in the river for signs of "life" (perception: 9) (life meaning movement that isn't current)
You do not detect anything swimming in the river. It's kind of hard to do so because of the dim light in addition to the current. Suddenly the party hears some rustling from the forest to the North East. A wolf cub comes out of the forest. It doesn't look very threatening. It's far also seems to be normal and you don't see any of the weird vegetation on it. It seems like this puppy is not infected.
"Call me sentimental, but if we've just killed and skinned that cubs family we are responsible for it now. It won't survive long alone. Let's throw it in the river and see if something eats it."
(technically there is some bright light from the parties 2 moon blades, but Endurance isn't going to see anything still)
"Excuse me Sentimental, I disagree with you. This cub deserves better. Throwing it in seems bad as if it dies then maybe the fungus would be able to take hold of it too, maybe we should throw you in"
"Now that hardly makes sense. If it's swept away by the current it makes no difference to us whether the fungus takes it or not. If you throw me in and I'm attacked, you're a hand down in the fight to come. And there's the mysterious rain of arrows you'll have to contend with on your crossing should I make the other bank."
Dismissing her bow, Yuldra shrugs her shield off her back and mounts it on her arm, her other hand on the hilt of her rapier. "You are, of course, welcome to try."
(Not advocating PvP, just making sure I don't have to endure a surprise round if I've got some coming to me)
"Well Sentimental, if the pup gets dragged by the current we won't know what happend. You have a chance. And if something is there you are more likely to survive while we rescue you. Of course if you are too afraid I will go in."
(Athletics: 1813 if disadvantage from heavy armour)
Varis watches Yul and Endurance go back and forth. He leans over to Glory, who's your money on? I'm thinking Yuldra, after that tiefling gets eaten by whatever's in the water.

The river does not react to your mage hand.

Varis looks at Yuldra: Don't suppose your patron would give you a boat?

Endurance jumps into the river... and begins sinking due to heavy armor.
