Whatever they were, the next words the man wanted to shout were never heard. Ruik was prepared for the lack of surrender. Frost continued to grow on the arms that raised the crossbow in defiance; but before the trigger could be pulled, and before Uragum could follow through on his threat, Sylyra had launched a shard of ice into the loft. It didn't seem to strike either man, but the explosion that followed certainly did. Icy shrapnel tore through the face of one and had the second cowering - until Zelra ended the fight by sending an arrow past the dodging Otger, into the side of the would-be bandit's head.
Ola tries to peer into the loft and into any possible space where further ambush could take place, but sees no more assailants.
The battle of the Meeting at Deepnight was over, with zero casualties on one side, and only one left breathing on the other. The pin is planted, and the egg recovered, still safely strapped onto Zelra's back.
OOC: Each character has received 32 XP for defeating the half-orc thug and his bandits.
Sylyra grins a cocky little smile then takes a length of rope and begins binding the unconscious woman at his feet. Once she's tied up, he stands. "This one's still alive. We should bring her to the stranger and let him question her — find out who these would-be thieves are." He looks at Uragum and snaps his fingers, pointing to the bound woman. "Bring her along. Let's get back to Madame Freona's."
Uragum puts his torch and flint and steel away and his head snaps over to Sylyra as she issues a command at him. "I have no problems carrying her, but I shall have my spoils first." he says and then starts to remove the weapons from the captive and the fallen. When an a questioning look crosses her face he continues. "Survival, if you're alive, you use what's available to live another day. They have equipment and gear that the dead can't use... or if you prefer, you can call it, 'Looking for clues.'"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Otger turns to the group, "How is everyone feeling? That fight was certainly not expected, Uragum, you look the worst of all of us. If you wouldn't mind sitting still for a moment." Otger pulls out his healer's kit and begins working, applying salves and bandages to Uragum's wounds. Once Otger is finished he says, "That should help you heal. Hopefully we don't fall into another ambush. Do we keep the guise going? Or should we all leave separately? Not sure if a prisoner is a good idea. Whoever set this up will know it went wrong, we could just leave them here. Won't make a difference the way I see it."
A touch envied admiration in Ola's eyes following Uragum faded away at sign of "trophies collecting" and she was herself again - distant politeness in a flesh. "The man who hired us wanted to know about the trade. Our attackers claimed the egg belonged to them. I think Sylyra's is right suggesting to bring the prisoner in, it might help to Harpers.""But I do not think we should travel back separately - there still can be danger on the streets".
Zelra puts her shortbow away and moves the backpack so shes wearing it at the front rather than the back, hugging it slightly."Well whatever it is you all want to do, you should all do it quickly so we can leave as soon as possible. We never know if more might show up. And the prisoner... well they might prove helpful to the Harpers but are you guys sure you just want to be dragging an unconscious body with us in broad daylight?"
Sylyra sighs once again. "Two options: Someone could run and fetch the 'Harpers' member, or we could wrap her up in something, say a bedroll, so she might look less conspicuous."
"Or we can pretend to carry a wounded comrade to the healer? Though bound hands would have to be covered, I supposed. I can help carrying her if my help is needed". (Helping or not, Ola is ready to move).
"Eh, you knocked her out instead of just killing her. You figure it out. You wanted a prisoner so she's your problem. Don't dump this trouble in our lap. Leave her or cut her throat. We weren't asked to take prisoners, just make the exchange. We did that, let's get moving before someone else comes along."
Sylyra narrows his eyes at Ruik, then looks at Ola. "Your help would be appreciated. I'll grab her shoulders." The elf bends down and unties the woman and stows his rope. He then lifts her shoulders awkwardly, clearly doing this for the first time, and nods at her feet while looking at Ola.
Without words, Ola covers woman's tied hands with the cape (if she wares one - the woman - then hers, if not - Ola's) and picks up the legs of "injured friend".
OOC: Removed 5 feet of rope from Sylyra's inventory and 1 use of a healing kit from Otger's inventory.
While the unconscious woman is bound and covered, Uragum looks over all of the bodies in the barn. None of them carry any coinage, clearly outfitted for battle and not leisure. Their scimitars, crossbows, and the half-orc's mace look like serviceable weapons, but are not in any condition that could fetch any coin. In addition, none of them are carrying any personal items or any form of identification.
Displaying his expertise with simple healing items, Uragum feels like new after Otger applies them.
The sun sets and twilight takes the sky on the short journey back to Phlan. Slowed by the additional weight, you reach the stables behind Madame Freona's Tea Kettle a half hour later, almost exactly on time for the Harper's original timeline. He is waiting in the shadows when the stable doors open, and once he sees that you are the entrants, he removes his hood once more, still keeping his voice lowered. His eyebrows raise at the sight of the unconscious woman. "Now what is this? I hope you haven't brought me her instead of the dragon's egg," he says with a smirk.
“A ... bonus,” Sylyra says breathlessly. He stumbles into the stables, half pulling Arnald along and almost dropping the woman as he is lowering her to the ground.
Setting the woman down, Arnald places his hands on the small of his back and stretches before looking toward their contact. "Yes yes. Not instead of. In addition to. Her crew ambushed us and claimed the egg was theirs. The rest are dead, Sylyra though we should find out who send them and why they claimed ownership. Seemed like a good idea to me. At the very least I'd like to know who we just made enemies of."
"That is interesting. I was certainly not expecting a third party. The egg, please," the Harper says, holding his hand out to Zelra. He opens the pack and carefully removes the egg, studying it in the flickering candlelight of the stables. After a moment, his eyes narrow. "A fake. And a very well-made one, too. Well, the important part is that you planted the pin on the seller without their notice. I would apologize for the trouble, but you are about to be rewarded for just that."
He counts out coinage from a large pouch and distributes it amongst the party, as well as a small vial. "You held up your end of the bargain; planted the pin on the seller and got out of there with the egg intact, so I will hold up mine. Two hundred gold pieces, and here, for the additional trouble, a potion of healing. You've earned your rest for the night, leave the 'egg' - and the woman - here with me. I will learn what I can from her, and meet you back inside the inn."
With the reward in hand, and the Harper promising to return to you with any information he learns about this third party, you have the opportunity to sit down for a late night meal and drinks, and discuss the day's events.
OOC: 30 gold pieces have been added to each character's inventory (20 gold pieces have been added to Ola's, according to the earlier agreement. If that should change, just let me know.)
That leaves a potion of healing unclaimed. You can either choose someone to hold that or roll a d20 for it. Let me know in the next round of posts who should get it and I will update the inventory. If nobody claims it before we advance, it will stay in the stables.
Each character has received 50 XP for successfully planting the pin, and 18 XP for recovering the egg, bringing each character to the maximum of 100 XP for this mission.
Uragum took the gold and poured it into his pouch. With a smile it says, "Thank you, and let me know if you have another job lined up. This last one was..fun." He then moves over to the bar and buys himself two large mugs of ale. He brings one back over to Otger and hands one over. "I owe you a drink after this patch work. Skill like that is rare...Specially without magic. Now drink up, I've got your tab tonight."
Upon hearing that the egg is a fake, Zelra sighs and kicks the floor. "Urgh, I knew it." She starts to check herself for any possible magical items that may have been stuck on her without her knowledge."If we could do it to them, they could've done it to us."
After checking herself, she walks up to Ola and leans on her shoulder with a hand out."Can I have my sword back now?"
After getting back her sword and with the gold handed out, Zelra stares into her pouch for a few moments before taking a single gold coin out. "Nothing wrong with having a little fun, right?" Safely putting her pouch away and pulling her hood up, she returns to the way she looked during the morning and calls for a gold coin's worth of ale, all for herself. She plops herself next to Otger and takes a large swig. She crudely wipes her mouth before letting out a little burp and grinning. "He's right, Otger. You did pretty good today. I would be dead if it weren't for you."
(OOC: In terms of the potion, I'm good with others having it.)
After receiving his gold, Arnald walks a few steps away and whistles a high note. A few moments later Sly comes swooping in and lands on Arnald's shoulder. Then, walking back up to the group, "I think Ola should have the potion. She was willing to work for less. Let the potion be her reward for her selflessness."
Arnald then heads inside and finds a seat near the entertainment (the place does have live entertainment, right? :D ) and orders a drink and a snack.
