Mulligan, your efforts do trigger something in Reng, as Kenny and Lenny repeatedly utter the hissing sound and you rack your brain over where you heard it before. Suddenly, like a flash, you remember one of the other captains having boasted once, that they were even more feared than the Yuan-Ti, the legendary snake people of the legends of old. Looking at Fang, you could see how from afar and in the dark, he could be mistaken for a hybrid between snakes and men. But surely, those legends couldn't be real, could they?

Bowing in return, the Professor says, “You are most kind, wise elder. “Thank you Elder Kenku…” Holding her hands to her chest, Shae’s eyes would be wide in awe as she’d be introduced and welcomed into their space. A warm smile would grow across her lips and she’d fall silent, spinning a little as she took it all in. Eventually coming to a stop, she’d reach up to the ladder to begin an immediate ascent towards the living cots.
It was the Professor’s question that was directed to her that would break Shae out of her daze. She’d pause herself, cheeks flushing a little pink as she’d turn to face the Professor before nodding. “I agree with your suggestions Professor.” She’d nod. “I would prefer us to regroup together for the night, discuss our options and next steps.” She’d reiterate.
“Snakes? Wha… no! Not on this boat!” Mulligan would assure Kenny and the others once Reng explained the gist of the situation. “Fang is no slithering, sneaky, snake in the grass! Fang proud warrior, friend, man of honor!”
This is likely all too quick and too heavy on concepts and stereotypes the Kenku do not have so Mulligan takes a deep breath and a pause before he tries again…
“Kenku and mosquito both have wings. Kenku not mosquitoes,” Mulligan says trying again.
“Snakes,” he says and mimics their noise for them as best he can, “and Fang have scales. Fang is not a snake! A couple similarities, but very different!”
“You and I, friends,” Mulligan tells them once he thinks they grasp what he is saying about Feng. “Feng and I friends. So Feng and you… friends! Feng on your side, like me. Will help you, like me.”
My next voyage better have a Cruise Director, Mulligan thinks. I’m not getting paid enough for this!
Shae would give Berrus a small smile, reminded that he was not a man for heights. “Mushu, will you keep me company up in the tree tops where we’re closer to the stars?” She’d give the pseudodragon some scratches under his chin.
“Should we send for the others then?” Shae would eventually add out loud to the others.

Considering her night affinity, Shae wanted to take advantage of the ‘free’ time and study. Should Reng be near, she’d approach the warrior woman, “Miss O’Malley, should you have the time, I was wondering if you’d be comfortable having a conversation with me?” Her head would tilt slightly with her ask. “I’m hopeful you may have some insight from your experience.”
Assuming Mulligan wouldn’t be too far, Shae would also have an ask for him. “Mulligan, if I may pick your brain,” She’d start, “I imagine you may have picked up folklore, fairytales, poem or song from the locals. I wonder if there could be some connections to my studies.”
Then of course Shae would address Fang and Mushu, “And I hope that you and Mushu would be available to fill any gaps.”
”Of course,” says the Professor sleepily after their filling meal, handing the mirror over to Shae and heading up to their place of rest. Perceptive ones might notice the soft chanting of a ritual being performed before the Professor settles for the night.

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Mulligan, after Shae approach and inquired about folklore, fairytales and the like, pondered for a moment while looking about at their strange new companions. After that moment he leaned back against a tree trunk and began singing softly...
Said the hawk unto the crow one day, "Oh how can you in mourning stay?" "I was once in love but I did prove slack And ever since I wear the black." "I was once in love but I did prove slack And ever since I wear the black."
The next to speak was Willie wagtail, "I was once in love but I did prevail, I was once in love but I did prevail And ever since I wag my tail." I was once in love but I did prevail And ever since I wag my tail."
Then up and spoke the little brown thrush, She was sitting in yon holly bush, "Oh the way to love I heard them say Is to court all night and to sleep all day."
And the last to speak was Jenny wren, "Do you know what I'd do if I were a man? In case that one should wriggle and go I'd wear two strings all upon my bow."
Once the song was sung he'd quirk a little smile at Shae and chuckle a bit. "Seems birds are on my brain," he quips but then leans forwards toward Shae. "But is it bird folk specifically you are inquiring about? Truth be told, I think I could drum up a ditty or two, perhaps a rhyme for you... But such creatures, to me, are quite new. I have no idea if the snippets and songs I know are true."
Mulligan would dig in his backpack for some rations to pick at while they talked, offering some to Shae, as well as his waterskin. He would dredge through his memories and call forth whatever he could about bird people or anything that seemed relevant to their current situation. Most songs or stories he'd think of wouldn't be performed at all, but just the relevant bits related to Shae to see if she thought further exploration of them would be helpful or not. But when Mulligan thought of a poem or song or whatnot that he thought particularly charming or delightful he would indeed put on a bit of a show with it. He would, of course, modulate the volume to the time of night not wanting to disrupt anyones sleep or such, but he was not afraid of an audience overhearing... He thought, indeed, these people may appreciate a well sung tweet or twiddle-dee-do.
Mulligan would, of course, be as charming and suave with the Lady Shae as he could be... But that too he would modulate a bit. They weren't in a tavern or at a party, this situation was not appropriate for the same level of pursuit. Besides, Mulligan had eyed up the interactions between her and that Berrus fellow... And until Mulligan deciphered just what that was he has decided to cool his heals. Slightly.
O’Malley had planned to stay with the ship, but when Shae asks her to stay and talk, she responds that of course she would, and asks what she is working on. Her eyes dart over the bits of the notebook that are visible, actually a little curious.
(Will be breaking this up into spoilers to make it seem less overwhelming over all and perhaps easier to digest. Not necessarily to hide from any one, I'd say please feel free to read them all if you'd like! I'm just getting lengthier than expected.)
Snively "Thank you." Shae accepts the mirror. "Good night Professor. Rest well." She'd bid his farewell for the night, smiling when she'd hear remnants of him preparing his ritual. She'd be sure to secure it safely in her bag with her notebook until appropriate.
(Saving the mirror for last. Makes sense in terms of perhaps using it in the early morning for the new day use and to know exactly what she'd want to ask it.)
Berrus "My hope is that it is not required any time soon." Shae would admit from Berrus' words. "Though I believe it'd be in safe hands, and I don't expect you to be far away." She knew separating him from it would be uncomfortable for the warrior. "I'll complete this portion of the studies with you on your watch so that it'll be available should you need it." The scholar would explain. "I was also hoping you'd engage in the review with me... or at least entertain me with trying..." She'd exhale then gesture in a direction to walk. "I want to talk."
Once a few steps away, Shae would fidget with her bracelet then blink away distant eyes. "I believe there's more to this sword, Berrus." After a pause Shae would glance up at the sky and continue. "I want to see if I can confirm or deny my theory before making too many assumptions or any claims." She'd start. "If part of my suspicions are true, I also believe it could be tied to your ancestry." Blue eyes would look from the sky down to Berrus. "For that alone, I think it's worth exploring for you."
Eventually Shae takes out her notebook and turns it to her most recent notes and next to them, a sketch of one of the scenes depicted by the mirror when the Professor was researching. Also remembering the Kenku's reaction while looking at these notes, Shae would scribble a couple new points with some believed to be corrections. Then looking over, she'd reach a hand out to the dwarven warrior. "First, the sword." She'd gesture for Berrus to come closer with it.
"I remembered when you found it." Her lip would pull into a slight smile, showing a hint of a her dimple. "It was in the catacombs." The scholar would place a bookmark on the page she was on then flip back to another. They were older notes, rougher. "When you picked it up, you showed me the pattern in its steel and said it reminded you of the Priest of Moradin's handiwork." She'd point out. "You discovered it amongst the night hag's ritual that was used to turn some of the buried there into her own undead."
"Didn't even think anything of it... Until now." Shae would pause to inhale a different breath turning back the newest notes, fully credited to the Professor. "I'm curious if it's this one." She'd bring attention to the sketch: A city in flames, and a leader with a flaming sword leading hordes of undead through open gates. Her eyes would study Berrus' body language and reaction. "Copper for your thoughts?"
(Main Objective: To see if they can confirm or debunk if Berrus' sword is the same sword as the 'flaming sword' wielded by what Shae dubbed the 'Undead Warrior'. Shae believes that Berrus would be best able to identify this by comparing swords and the runes on it. Side Objective: Would be curious if Berrus would know anything else about the Priest of Moradin and their work. Purpose: to see if there's any significance/connection to a certain paladin or other work.)
Reng
Upon Reng's agreement to converse with her, Shae would bow her head slightly "Thank you." She'd look up. "I hope not to take you away from anything too long. I do appreciate you taking the time." She'd offer a warm smile as she'd make a gesture for the warrior woman to invite her to walk with her.
As always, Shae's eyes find the sky as she steps and eventually she'd break the silence and begin to share out loud to her company. "O'Malley, if I may share..." The corner of her mouth pulled into a sheepish smile. "Although almost every moment can be a memorable moment in this jungle, for the good or the bad, there's one that continues to pop up." She'd start. "And I thought of it again while reviewing some of my notes."
"During our time in this jungle, we once encountered a black panther caught and severely wounded in a trap." The purple haired woman would begin to fidget with her bracelet. "I was of no true help... it was a risk, but I pleaded..." A part of her winced. "But the others..." Her expression would soften in one of gratitude. "The Professor, clever as always, came up with a plan of compromise. While I was escorted to safety, he used his magic to manipulate the earth in a way that gave it a better chance to free itself." She knew it wasn't going to be the most profound story, but she was sharing first in hopes that it'd encourage Reng to share too.
Shae would take out her notebook and open it to a section marked with a ribbon. "We carried on our own ways and of course eventually set up camp for thenight." She'd point out the sketched prints she had examined. "Come morning there was evidence that it came by while we slept." She'd pause for a moment and rock on the balls of her feet. "I believe it may have watched over us that night." She would give a shy smile, remembering that watch felt like they were being watched too. "And it's been so long, perhaps I imagined it, but maybe even followed us part of our trek within it's territory. At first I thought it silly to think we actually made an ally, even temporary, in the wilds of this jungle." She'd admit before continuing to muse out loud. "But since then we've experienced and learned so much, that it doesn't feel as farfetched any more..." They were in a Kenku village after all.
Noticing O'Malley showing some interest in her notes, Shae was happy to flip to some old ones to continue the conversation. "We later made some discoveries in some caves." She'd motion to one section, "And again in some catacombs." She'd then indicate another. "I've been inspired to learn more about the Jaguar references in my studies." Shae would finally get to her point.
"I have honestly wondered what your unique experience in this place may have encountered and am always excited for another perspective." The scholar would pause herself to take a breath to check to see if she was talking too fast or too much.
In the first section the scholar would show a copy of a mural that depicted a mythological circle. She'd point to the second panel in a series. "I was curious if you had any knowledge about a deity that resembles a jaguar."
"More so though," Shae would then flip to the second section. Here she showed sketches and notes of a specific crypt within the catacombs. Her finger would run along the drawing of rotten male remains with a bladed club and feather shield. Following it, she'd eventually trace over to the sketch she did of the mural that decorated his tomb. "You wouldn't happen to know anything of a jaguar skinned warrior, would you?"
(Main objective: To see if Reng would be familiar with anything 'jaguar skinned warrior', hoping she could have had any interesting encounters or heard any old stories during her pirate life. Priority. Side Objective: To learn more about the Jaguar deity. )
Mulligan
Shae stood with a polite smile when Mulligan would steal a moment to serenade her, it was hard not to enjoy the sound. For once it's not her words filling up the air, and she had to admit, it was nice to have a moment to breathe and just listen. Although carrying through with a heavy bird theme she could appreciate considering their surroundings, it was the rhyming that garnered him the most genuine of smiles throughout. And as the man was about to jump into more prattle, she'd place a hand on his forearm to stop him from getting ahead of himself. "How about we lay off this egg for now?" She cringed at her own attempt to be punny. But it wasn't the Kenku she wanted to ask him about.
"Actually, I was hoping to explore a deeper topic." Though the first one didn't stop her, Shae couldn't keep a straight face when she dropped that pun and would chuckle to herself. Mulligan wouldn't get that one yet since she hasn't raised the discussion around the undead. "I hope you don't mine." Or cave dwellers.
"Thank you." Shae accepts the share of rations offered and takes a seat. After taking a moment to get comfortable, she'd take a breath before finally unpursing her lips to ask the question. "Would you entertain the musings of a madwoman with me?" Her eyes would meet his, head tilting slightly with her ask.
"We previously encountered the undead, but more memorable was the night hag and her journal we obtained." Shae would start. "After witnessing what the mirror had to show the Professor and how the Kenku reacted, I couldn't help but feel the need to sift back through compiled research referencing her and that material." She'd take out her notebook. Thumbing through some pages, Shae would continue. "I'm hopeful that knowingly or not, you may have come across some interesting tales or whispers that may actually be more than just that."
She'd land in a section with cave murals that depicted a large bat hovering over a priest or chieftain with a bladed club in one hand and a goblet of blood in the other. "Have you heard of a bat-like deity in your culture experience?" After giving Mulligan some time to think it over for a moment, the researcher would then flip to a section from the hags journals. "There's reference to a god of the underworld, Zotzilaha." She'd point out some copied notes. "And then now a mention of 'the Night Serpent to bring about the reign of her children'."
Blue hues would look back up from her pages to check to see if she's lost Mulligan. "I'm sorry." Shae would make herself take a breath to pause. "I know I'm hopping around a fair bit," She'd give an apologetic smile. "I'm hoping to find snippets of knowledge that could confirm or deny details that may help us paint a clearer picture of what actually happened so long ago..."
(Main objective: Trying to figure out who Zotzilaha is to confirm whether they're 'team bat' or 'team snake'. Side objective: Dig deeper into the reference of the 'Night Serpent and her children' to confirm where that fits.)
(Apologies in advance. Hopefully it all makes sense.
But hey! I did make it in this year! Well. For me anyway.
Berrus goes with Shae . when asked for the sword he unbuckles the belt and bows slightly as he hands it to her in the scabbard.. aye i found it after tha hag...funny enough i still hae na used it in battle. Not sure why i ha it now an no me axe ta be honest. But tis in your service. he watches her as she examines the blade. ta be honest ive almost given up tryin te find the mines..i dinna think tha Trueanvils came from here. he looks up at her. im glad ye were still in town when i came back from tha fools errand
Shae returns a bow of her head as she accepts the weapon. At the mention of his axe, she remembered how he began with his trusted weapon. It wouldn't be something he'd just simply replace. Her face would look thoughtful for a moment then a small smile pulled at her lips. "Because you passed it down with your knowledge, Berrus." Taking hold of the sword handle, Shae would unsheathe the weapon. It was heavy for her, even as she'd rest it along her lap. "I wasn't the only one you trained." She reminded. There was Bertrand, Brax and Cliff whom he took under his wing and passed down his prized steel. She fondly remembered the moment.
When Berrus would break the silence to admit that he's almost given up on his purpose of coming to Chult in the first place, Shae's expression would sadden. Even more so when he'd repeat that he went on a 'fool's errand'. Why didn't he just talk to her? Say something? She would of understood, or helped... "I'd be lying if I didn't admit that there are times I still wonder if I made the wrong decision to stay." Shae's eyes glossed over and her lip would quiver. She caught herself often thinking back to Maxine's offer... She missed her dearly. That being the largest understatement of the year. Shae would clench her jaw and inhale a breath. She'd glance up to the sky to stop the tears from flowing, then exhale. Looking back down, she'd make herself refocus.
Examining the blade, Shae would fall silent for a moment. She'd tip and tilt it as she looked, careful of the edges. Her blue eyes traced the surface, watching the way the moonlight danced off the steel and revealed the intricate runes. "What if I said I think I know where the mines are? And that I'm researching what I believe to be part of Trueanvil origin?"

Snively
"Thank you." Shae accepts the mirror.
Berrus
"My hope is that it is not required any time soon." Shae would admit from Berrus' words.
"We carried on our own ways and of course eventually set up camp for the night." She'd point out the sketched prints she had examined.
Cheers!)

Laissez les bons temps rouler
Berrus
