The injured guard raises his sword above his head as if to try and finish off Rollo when an arrow pierces his throat. He drops his weapon to his side and clutches at his neck desperately trying to stop the bleeding before he collapses in the mud.
Two more bolts fly towards the gate, one landing short the other flying off in the distance.
Zack, see's that the situation is grim, and getting more-grim doomhammer by the second. He gets up when Claire becomes their shield and he felt chagrined, this was supposed to be his duty, yet he got out-heroe'd by Nadaar, and now Claire. He almost felt a wave of uselessness flow through him but his adrenaline kept it at bay, for now, he could still help someone.... And though conscious, Rollo was still down. Zack dropped his sword and picked up Rollo, slinging him over his shoulder after feeling that minor healing from the wolf, though imperfect it was helpful to the nth degree. As Rollo settled on his back, Zack began to run back towards Nadia. Andale! he shouted Get moving Nadia! As fast as you can, ignore the enemy. The sooner we're out of range, the sooner Claire can retreat.
He moved as fast as the terrain allowed and his body could handle (Normal or dash if picking up wasn't an action) trying to pull out of sight of the place.
(Wtf is with these Rolls. This guys 2nd nat 20 in a row)
Zack picks up Rollo and starts to flee, running through Nadias healing spirit and granting a last measure of respite to both Zack and Rollo. The spirit fades as its final use is expended and Zack charges through the mud. The archer in the court yard moves up towards the gate and aims his crossbow at the fleeing Zack. The bolt flys through the air and goes clean through the back of Zacks knee and out the other end. The fighter stumbles and falls in the mud dropping Rollo next to him.
Rollo hits the ground and rolls before getting back to his feet thanks to Claire. He looks down at Zack before grabbing the fallen fighter slinging him like a small child in return, continuing the retreat. He pumps his last bit of Tyr's blessing into the fighter to awaken him. As he does he lets the anger inside well up, hoping it will lessen the impact of the blows directed at him.
Claire drops concentration on Wind Wall as the blades split her skin and spill blood. Gritting her teeth against the pain she glances over her shoulder to see that the others have made it a good distance. She turns her horse and flees, taking the opportunity attack(s), and then, after making it 60 feet away, raises her hand and chants, generating another wall of wind just behind her, though the words come weakly.
Thr guard gets one last strike in at Claire before she escapes his area of control. The guard.gives a brief chase before a wall.of strong wind cuts off his path, connecting to the sides of the stone wall to form a sort of cage. The guards curse and shout but make no attempt to give chase through the wall or further into the swamp, allowing you all to escape and regroup. Combat is over for now.
Once their retreat slows to a walking/trotting pace, Claire sighs deeply, wincing in pain. "Well... that could have gone better...but our light shines on for another day."

As Rollo casts the flame at the guard, Zack had regained enough of his senses to realize he was being carried, patting the man with his fingers on the chest to signify he was hopping off, as he moved with them as they retreated. Breathing heavily, not from exhaustion but from being at the river Styx twice. As he ran he summoned his sword to his hand, as it hadn't had a chance to be picked up before, and sheathes it.
Seeing that, atleast for now, they weren't being pursued as they head back to where their horses had been left and tied -barring the lizardfolk having eaten them- and Claire speaking up... Barely, but yeah... If I had better control of the .. magic side of my skills I could have done more, but it's.. a recent development. Sorry. he said, clearly beating himself up inside for his poor performance. What had happened? Atleast it will provide cover, and I think Nadia can lead us back now that we've been here. Maybe..

You all make your way back to the hut in the swamp with Nadias aid. The hut is just as abandoned as you left it and the hole in the ground leading to the cave is still exposed. You think you could probably rest safely here though its still possible there might be a search party looking for you. For now however all is calm and you can begin your rest (will be waiting to introduce new pc. Feel free to rp in the meantime)
Though everyone was worse for the wear, it seemed the party had made it back to the hag den. And as tempting as it was to grab the 'food' that had been set out he didn't trust that it didn't have some kind of poison or other similar thing inside it. And making sure the 'trap door' was re-hidden as they slipped down Zack began to tend to his wounds, as likely Rollo did as well. Nadia hadn't been touched as far as he could remember, and neither was Rillex the cat that totally isn't being constantly forgotten and Claire, had been at-least hit a few times.
Well that didn't go as well as expected... and .. we should expect that the door will be fixed by the time we're back, and that there will most likely be more guards, and they'll be on high alert. I'm just glad we survived... Thanks for the healing by the way. If those lizardfolk hadn't rushed us out of here I would have suggested we rest before we left but I figured they weren't going to linger to help us later..
I figure we should hunker down for the night and get some real rest... after getting some food in us...
Rollo gets a small fire going and then takes a handaxe from his side. He heats it over the fire before pulling one of the bolts from his chest and holding the hot blade to it to cauterize the wound. He repeats the process over and over until his cuts are cleaned. "Ow that smarts. I think it may be best that we look for another way in in the morning. That was a lot of guards and if they're behind their walls I don't believe that I'll be much help. If we could get inside and take them on in smaller groups it would be best."

As zack took a seat against the floor.. against the wall, he saw what Rollo was doing, only to then realize he had a few of those in him himself. He began to look around himself, to find spots suddenly in pain that he hadn't paid attention to until just seconds ago, though unlike Rollo he didn't use the fire he had made, instead, as he pulled the bolt out, he would ignite the bolt-tip while holding the arrow like a dagger to close the wound. If there were any in area's he couldn't reach, he' ask Nadia to help pull them out until he was no longer a half-porcupine.
That or atleast be able to take them on where they don't have cover when they choose to while we have none. I wish I had the tools to make a ladder, that wall didn't seem that high, what twenty feet? Would also be nice if I could teleport to my blade instead of just the other way around. But I suppose everything has its limits.. Ach... he says as he feels a pulse of minor pain from one of the bolt holes. The question is where? That gates the only ground entrance we're aware of, and most forts only have one entrance. But atleast we know their strategy now.... Maybe the magic you used.. uh.. Claire, can it be angled? Like where it could completely prevent them firing on us while we're at the gate? force them to come into melee?
Adrenaline had still been pumping itself through her veins for a good chunk of their journey back through the swamplands. If there was one thing she was truly thankful for, it was for her ability to remember routes. Having successfully gotten them back to the hags den for a much needed rest, Nadia had finally been able to breathe. She had faired well throughout that fight, but, of course, the same couldn't be said about her other party members.
The ranger watches Rollo start up a fire and heat up his axe in curiosity, then immediately looks away when he begins to press the heated metal against his flesh. Nope. That might have been effective in stopping the bleeding, but **** that. Magic healing for me only, please... She thinks warily. While they spoke of new strategies in taking on the fortress, Nadia helps Zack in cleaning up the wounds he was unable to reach, and also asks if Claire wanted some assistance as well. Wounds care wasn't exactly an area of expertise for her (at most cleaning up scratched up knees), so she would watch closely how Claire had taken care of herself, unless it was the same way Rollo was doing.
"I could go back in the dead of night and sneak around the area to find another entrance..." Nadia suggests loosely.
While you all discuss events and plans to try again you hear movement from the tunnel you just came through. You wait for several long moments while you wait for the first enemy to come through the darkness. Suddenly a form appears and you almost attack before realizing its the Lizardfolk Shaman. Behind him is a tall, Goblinoid like that some of you might recognize as a hobgoblin. H-Here are theys. Could smell. Smell like blood. Smell like defeat. He turns to hobgoblin behind him. Scaleless ones. These them you seek. He says with confidence in his broken common.
Rollo picks back up his axe. "I don't see you doing any better shaman. Let me remind you who it was who took care of your little problem with the hags. Now, hobgoblin, who are you and why are you looking for us?"

The hobgoblin in question, who had yet to do more than nod in agreement with the Lizardfolk, raises a brow at Rollo. Then without answering, he looks over the condition and appearance of everyone else before slowly holding his hands up in surrender. "Mn! Not very neighborly over ya, but I do understand that these are a bit of a stressful times fer ya. What with this whole getting to the root of that demoness business and all that, or so a mutual associate of ours told me. Not that you would know that, eh?" He said grinning and giving a kind of cringing wink.
"The names Narz by the way, bud. As you can see or probably heard of, I am surely a hobgoblin. But, don't let the fangs and reputation get to ya, as surely as some arrows seem to, eh? I mainly here to repay a debt owed to Happy, as he regrettably found himself entangled in more religious matters. Something about a big freeze portended to hit the high north or something." He shrugs. "It is however a pleasure to finally meet you all, or so we both hope it soon will be, eh?" Either as he was studying the group, the group may notice some things in turn.
What stands before is a taller than average hobgoblin, if the red skin and sharpened teeth did not give enough away, and a fairly well-muscled one at that. Long black hair flows from his scalp ending just past the shoulders, and sideburns frame a chiseled face alongside a well-kept beard. And whenever eyes meet the sharp, dark browns of the hobgoblin, there's always almost always both a wariness and intensity there.
Apart from these things, the hobgoblin bears no visible scars or markings, but carries himself with the demeanor of a seasoned officer. Contrary to the care taken to the body, the hobgoblin's clothing is a more worn traveler's affair with remnants of; consisting of steel-toed hiking boots, thick black trousers, and long sleeved shirt overlapped by a hooded trench coat. He also bore thick, fingerless gloves, exposing black, sharpened nails. What he lacked in armor, he appears to make up for in arms however, as a maul and heavy crossbow rests at his back, a horn at his hip, and some black metal rod holstered on the opposite side, in addition to other standard explorer's gear.
Crawling also from behind his feet is a black cat with yellow eyes and bat wings sprouting from its back. It regards everyone with an uncanny bit of intelligence behind its eyes, but doesn't speak, if it can at all.
Narz's visual minus the glowing eye bit. That only happens when Detect Magic is active:
When the alarum had been raised, Zack shifted to position, with his top off much to his chagrin, not that his armor mattered in the face of urbs endless 20+ rolls recent enemy attacks, but he didn't feel he had time to get it on without costing himself more dearly. His sword appearing in his hand as he faced the only place the enemy could be coming from. The hob would see the Hag corpses strewn across the ground, as well as the many bones that had been moved enough out of the way to allow a decent bit of stretching room for the group. Zacks horse had been put inside the house, as well as the other horses (most likely) with some grass or whatever shrubbery could be found brought in for a 'midnight snack.'
As odd as horses inside a home would look, having them outside it would only attract attention from farther away. Rollo more or less said the retort that Zack felt and would have said otherwise so instead he just nods affirmatively. Yeah, what brings you here? Who are you with? he asks, just before the hob responded.
At the 'arrows' comment Zack bristled a bit, as he had nearly died to them multiple times, and the tease was poorly timed - as well as his pride. Then he looked confused at the mention of a 'freeze up north' as he had no idea what the guy was talking about. But If happy sent him... then he can't be that bad... he mumbled though he voiced Hopefully you don't have as much an issue with lying to the enemy to prevent fighting as Happy did. But if he sent you, I suppose you have my trust, considering how much of a help he was in the events at the castle.
But yeah, we went in a little under-prepared. But now that we have an idea of their defenses they won't be able to pull the same shit twice. We just need a way around. he said as he put his sword tip back in the ground and sat down to continue recovering. I already busted down their door but we expect they'll repair that extra swiftly. So how much do you know about this? he asked, ignoring the lizardfolk who though they had assisted them, they apparently didn't want to remain on Zacks good side as they slid into neutral.
