Tell Naomi the dagger has magickal spells imbedded that make it a more effective weapon and worth a lot of money. Antiques roadshow would point out that it has been substantially restored which would reduce the value to a collector.

"He's a specialist bronze smith," Granny replies. "At least that's what he told me. His smithy is near the river... Don't know what it's called though, I'm afraid."

Then she asks, "Worth a lot, you say... I don't suppose it is something you could make yourself, is it?"

OOC Is there much wear on the handle? Does it look like it might have just been restored (possibly by the gentleman himself)? Also is this a permanently enchanted item or is it likely to have a limited number of charges? 

"Not at my stage of learning I'm afraid. I wonder if Tedric actually owns this. If he's working on it and I tell him it's worth a lot maybe he has shifty ideas."

[OOC: The handle and blade are all one piece of bronze. The leather grip shows signs of wear, as does the damaged brass hilt. There is no sign that any restoration has been done on the piece as yet. The Transmutation magic on the bronze blade seems to be either permanent, or self sustaining (i.e., no charges), the Conjuration runes on the blade are something else again, they also don't appear to have charges, nor do they have any inherent magical power of their own, but they are Arcane in nature.]

Granny Naomi just shrugs when Guilliame tells her his concerns about Tedric's honesty, then she adds, "I haven't heard of him being dishonest... That sort of thing gets around amongst the merchants."

"Fair enough. I'll tell him what I know then. I don't want to seem nosey but I'm curious where he got it from. Is there anything to do around the shop?"

Granny Naomi shrugs and says, "Not really. I'd have you put up the drying racks upstairs, but there's no use doing it now as the rain is going to start soon."

As if on cue, it starts raining: large heavy drops and the two of them do the rounds of the shop to make sure there is no water getting in anywhere. They then decide to have a cup of char because the chance of any passing trade while it is raining is very low.

The rain continues to fall for the rest of the afternoon, but they keep the shop open because their customer, Tedric, is expected back before dark.

He makes it, just.

With the rain still falling outside, Tedric arrives looking very wet and bedraggled, the hessian bag he is using for cover not proving very successful against the strength of the downpour.

"Hello, Magus de Marchant," he says, trying not to drip on anything valuable. "What do you have to tell me?"

OOC This knife may not be so good as you led me to expect: "...provides an extra +1 to hit and a +1 to damage to its wielder." Poor wielder. I am  assuming the target gets the +1 damage.

"Good day to you, Master Tedric. I have some good news and some bad news for you. It also has conjuration runes that enable the sword to be used with a Mage hand cantrip - I can't demonstrate because I don't know it. The runes also show ownership."

"There is a new handle added to the blade. I don't think that will impact on the magickal properties but it may not be balanced as it initially was. Overall I think it is a valuable weapon."

"The bad news is you owe me an Engle."

[OOC: By handle, I will assume you mean either the leather grip or the brass hilt as I said previously that the handle and the blade were all one piece of bronze.]

"Interesting," says Tedric as he fishes an Engle out of this coin pouch and hands it across. "What do you mean by ownership?"

[OOC: I have added an Engle to the shop's coins on the character sheet.]

"I think these runes here indicate the owner but I can't recognise a specific owner."

"Oh," says Tedric, and then after a moment he asks, "How old do you think that dagger is? I mean, might the owner still be alive, do you think? It's an unusual design. It might be Gontish. Can you tell?"

[OOC: Guilliame might be able to learn the answer to these questions with a better casting of Identify tomorrow, but at the moment he can't answer these questions.]

"I don't know. I might be able to learn more about the runes at the school or by further study of the item itself. It would take me more time so I would have to charge more but I can investigate if you like." 

Tedric thinks for a moment and then says, "No, don't bother." He then goes on to ask, "So, how much do you think it would be worth?"

To answer your question of before, Tedric's attitude seems more business-like and calculating rather than suspicious.

"I am a mage, not a valuer but I'm sure it is worth many 10s if engles at least. If someone offers less than 20 they must be dreaming."

Tedric sighs and says, "My customer was wondering if I wanted to buy it, but it sounds too expensive..."

He picks up the dagger and folds it into its wrappings again. He then looks towards the door where the rain is still coming down outside.

"Funny," he muses. "Now that I know how valuable it is, I feel nervous about going out into the dark streets. I don't suppose you have a lantern I could borrow? I will bring it back tomorrow."
