Rhayna's voice of prayer sings out over the demons' roars, calling down Selune's blessing on her friends. Derendil is the first to leap into the fray, slashing his claws savagely at the pig-nosed dretch on the left and opening gaping fissures in its skin which hiss and smoke. Sekkar flanks in on the right, striking the huge demon with a stab in its side. Smoke also issues from the wound right into Sekkar's face, and he struggles to make any effective follow-up attack as he clears the air around him. Sarith slips in beside Sekkar and manages two stabs at the dretch on the right flank, opening more smoking wounds.
From further back, Zeno takes careful aim, waits for a gap in the melee and shoots the ape-like barlgura in the neck, just as Kaylyn's magic bolts slam into the demon's chest, which roars in pain and anger. It thumps down at Derendil with two huge fists, one of which the quaggoth dodges but catches the other on the shoulder. The barlgura then turns to its other assailant and bites down at Sekkar. The lizardman brings up his shield to fend off the demon, but it is too strong, and bites down on both the shield and Sekkar's arm, and the ranger shudders as he glimpses the horror of the Abyss.
Blurg then enters the fray, using his axe to fend off further attacks against the group by the big demon, and encouraging the party to battle. Jimjar slips in beside Derendil and stabs at the dretch, then withdraws as the small demon falls to the earth and turns to smoke, which then disappears as if sucked through a hole in the ground. The second dretch can barely lift its head and arms, but suddenly erupts in a cloud of noxious green gas, the smell of which is so vile that it causes Sekkar, Blurg and Sarith to retch and cough, and the drow drops his swords and retreats.
Kastix loves his fire spells, and although his three rays of flame scorch holes in the huge demon, including one directly in its eye, much of the fire glances off the creature harmlessly. Joetaro springs into the gap left by Sarith, holds his sword aloft which glows with a soft light like the moon, and slices down on the gas-emitting dretch, which follows the first one back into the Abyss.
Conditions: Sekkar is Blessed and is in a poison cloud (At start of turn, must succeed on a DC 11 CON save or be poisoned until the start of your next turn. (If Rhayna is less than 60ft of the barlgura, she will move within range. She will try not to make herself too obvious to the demon while moving.)
As Rhayna gets closer to the demon barlgura, her eyes opens wider. "I finally get to meet a demon!!" She thinks to herself. However, it is trying to kill her companions, so she must help her friends. She brings her pendant forth. Two huge tomes appear next to the barlgura's head, and closes together with a (wimpy) very loud bang. (Rhayna casts Toll the Dead (WIS 14, DMG: 1)

OOC: OK, I thought that fight would be much harder, but since you are managing just fine on your own I decided not to include Blurg's attacks. I added Bless to Joetaro's attack to make it a hit, so now Dretch is dead, and I will change Round 2 attacks to Barlgura. Just a quick look and I can see the fight is over, but I'll post Round 2 later.
@BlueBayou: For attack rolls, yes, as per PHB: "If the d20 roll for an attack is a 1, the attack misses regardless of any modifiers or the target's AC". For saving throws and ability checks it's not an automatic pass/fail, but I like to acknowledge the 1s and 20s by giving extra rewards/penalties despite the outcome.
At Rhayna's command, two ethereal books appear on either side of the barlgura's head and slam into it, doing minimal damage but making the demon look up from the battle in confusion. Sekkar takes advantage of that moment to speak a word that causes his sword to shimmer with a greenish tinge, and then strikes the ape-like creature on the arm, at which moment vines shoot from the wound and burrow into the earth, binding the demon's arm to the ground. Thus imprisoned, Kaylyn places a celestial malediction on the demon and fires another magic bolt, hitting it in the neck and causing the flesh all over its face to shrivel and smoke. As the beast howls its last, another crossbow bolt from Zeno takes the barlgura in the heart, and with a final shudder the demon is sucked into a dimensional singularity, leaving only its howl echoing off the walls.
Blurg lowers his axe and turns to the group: I should be glad I traveled with you as far as I did else I might have encountered those fiends alone. However these are not the first I've confronted of late, and although they are not unheard of, particularly with the propensity of the drow to summon them, it disturbs me that I should see more so soon. My friends, I must look into this without delay and contact my order. I thank you, and bid you farewell. And with that Blurg speaks an arcane word and vanishes from sight.
The group resume their rest, although those not on the first watch spend much of it laying with eyes wide open. The howls of the vanquished demons seem to echo in their minds long after they have dissipated from the tunnels, and continue into their dreams. Sekkar in particular sleeps fitfully, the site of the bite wound on his arm burning constantly. In his dreams he is with the people of his village, wading in the shallows catching crustaceans, when he feels a tug at his leg that drags him not only under the water but down through the earth. He finds himself in a barren, rocky wasteland with dry, howling winds mimicking the howls of the barlgura, and a blood-red sky. His fellow villagers are around him but as they reach out and call to him for help, he hears no sound but only sees plagues of flies and insects pour out of their mouths and eye sockets toward him, and he awakens with his blood feeling colder than usual.
Nightmares is not something lizardmen are accustomed too - they are too practical to let imagination go wild. Sekkar simply did not know what to do and had a rare feeling of regret, not having his former comrades around. Thorvard would know what to say - he new everything (or at least could convince anyone he did). Well, he was not here. Sekkar did not waste time contemplating about ominous but hardly understandable signs, shrug it off on an account of the bad bite - he checked it up, by the way, there are all sorts of nasty creatures down here, one has to be careful - and was ready to continue the journey (still enjoying the fact that now they had maps).
"Blurg said the drow summon these demons, I fear they may have summoned them to hunt us down. They came from the direction we came from. Despite how far we have come we are still hunted. We must continue to be wary"
Kaylyn comments before heading back to bed to get some sleep. Pensive remains curled up with her to comfort her in her sleep.
“That...was strange. What did he mean, that the drow were summoning the demons? And when we met that guy, he was wanting to go past us, and instead he traveled in the same direction, only to, what, poof away?” Zeno shakes his head. “Things aren’t adding up down here.”
"He did show us maps and so far they proved true. Did not look that dangerous either. I am with your magician here on that one - drow could send or summon those things. Meaning, we have to move fast again."
The group manage to rest long enough after the battle with the demons to awaken unaffected, with one exception. When Zeno tried to rouse Sarith from his trance to take watch, he found the drow awake but unresponsive and simply staring at the tunnel wall mumbling something unrecognisable. Zeno woke Kastix to take watch instead (who heard in the mumbling the repeated words "Rot and Decay" in Abyssal) and so on until morning when the drow rose along with everyone else, acting entirely normal. When questioned about his night-time stupor, Sarith had no memory it, nor even of the encounter with the demons!
Travel for the day was also delayed by Derendil, who refused to leave without his 'black gem'. Eventually Joetaro managed to persuade him that he had fled Velkynvelve with almost nothing, and that noone had seen any black gem, which he eventually accepted although he continued to mutter sullenly throughout the day about the black gem. Observing this, Rhayna thought it was perhaps related to the fact that Derendil had felt somewhat offended by Blurg the day before. Blurg had been introduced to everyone, and was intrigued with Derendil's tragic story, but admitted that he had not mapped Derendil's homeland of Nelrindenvane, or even heard of it.
Aside from these peculiarities, travel continued uneventful with Sekkar and Kaylyn sharing navigation duty, and even Shuushar starting to recognise some landmarks. After another night's rest, the journey continues, with Derendil continuing to be distracted by the 'loss' of the black gem, and Sarith acting disoriented and absent-minded. The tunnels are again so narrow that the group must walk single file, but the high ceiling gradually widens so that they are soon walking in a narrow five-foot-deep gully with wide ledges on either side. Zeno grows nervous, thinking this is an ideal place for an ambush ...
