Hemeth shares a brief story about the few times he has seen demons before. He doesn't seem familiar enough with demon lore to know their types, by Rhayna easily identifies them as he describes them. He was attacked by several quasit once while on a trade voyage, but they fled after he killed one. He also says that one of the smiths in Gracklstugh once had a dretch as a forge slave, but he was punished by the Deepking who wouldn't sanction such actions. He wouldn't risk becoming like the accursed drow who apparently keep demon slaves as a status symbol. But beyond that he has never even encountered a demon of any sort, much less a demon lord, nor has he ever heard of one.
However, Hemeth says that he has been observing a lot of unusual things lately. Just before he left Gracklstugh, some of the duergar had been acting strangely. The behaviour of the kuo-toa in Sloobludop had been particularly unusual, even for that race. The aggressiveness of the merrow was uncharacteristic, as they normally only attack smaller groups and in larger numbers. The stirges they saw days ago normally roost quietly, but these had been flying aimlessly. It was like the whole Underdark had gone crazy.
Sarith answers evasively when asked his opinion on the current craziness of the Underdark. Stool communicates to Rhayna that during one rest, when it linked to Sarith via its spores, that it noticed Sarith had no memories at all of the visit to the kuo-toa village, or the subsequent attack, and was most confused whenever anyone talked about it.

How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
After another night of camp in the still darkness, the journey continues. The current slows, the rocks become fewer and farther between, and the ceiling stretches higher and higher until even Pensive finds it beyond reach. Hemeth explain that they are now entering the very lowest and deepest point of the Darklake, the featureless expanse of the Weeping Deep. The day's journey concludes with the group camping on a small, cold, uncomfortable, rocky island barely big enough for the party to lay on without their feet dangling in the water.
The eighth day of the journey is the first without any features at all for the travellers to take a bearing, save for the tiny camping rock they cast off from. Despite the lack of distant vision the two boats seem miniscule as they ply the still waters in the massive cavern. To even call it a cavern is difficult, with a ceiling miles overhead and depths unfathomable, the group might as well be adrift in the featureless expanse of the Astral void. No horizon, no distant light, no faerzress, nothing but 60 feet of water as smooth as glass but as dark as obsidian, and hour upon hour of silent paddling. After a day's labour, there is no choice but to rest awkwardly in the boat, leaning against the gunwhales or each other, and Hemeth announces that they are at the halfway point to Gracklstugh distance-wise, although progress will be slower against the current.
On the ninth day the endless sea stretches on, but despite the unimaginable open expanse around them, a growing sense of oppression fills the minds of all. The stillness lays on each like a heavy blanket, and a dread feeling of a mighty presence looms. One by one, each of the travellers feels a sensation of a powerful intelligence stroke their minds, touching their very souls as though violated by a chthonic psyche as ancient as the stars. The sensation lingers for only a minute or two, but the suffocating feeling persists for hours. It is almost laughable when Hemeth warns everyone against drinking the water.
After another cramp-inducing night spent sleeping fitfully in the boats, dreaming of an alien evil lurking in the crushing depths, the group pushes onward. The heaviness of the day before has lifted, but the deep stillness persists, and each soft splash of the oar in the water is as clear as a hammer-stroke on an anvil. The first of the visible rocks emerges after half the day is done, and gradually more and more appear. There is a brief moment of alarm as a large crustacean-like creature is seen perched on a nearby rock, watching the group pass. It has lobster-like pincers, insectoid legs and a mouth filled with writhing tentacles, and weapons and spells are hastily prepared, but it makes no aggressive move. The briefest sensation of the telepathic invasion from the day before momentarily re-emerges, but is just as quickly gone. The creature's gaze seems to linger the longest on Kaylyn, and the warlock could swear she felt her rod tingle slightly, but decides it must just have been nerves or imagination. But it is another tense and wary night of watching and sleeping on another confining and uncomfortable spit of rock.
On the next day's journey, the eleventh from Sloobludop, the rocky features continue to increase again, and the group are actually glad for the distraction of looking out for 'stone teeth' again, and navigating around obstacles. Larger and larger islands appear more often, many populated with fungi or lit by shimmering faerzress, and the group stop at a particularly large, fungus-filled and faerzress-covered outcrop to take a short rest and forage for food, glad for the change from goodberries. But the group have barely set foot on the island when a voice is heard in their heads. The voice is soft and feminine, faint and distant, and echoes in everyone's minds, saying: "Hello? Is someone there ... ? Oh please, I need your help! I have been trapped in the dark for so long ... so very long. Please, won't you help to free me?"

After Stool tells Rhayna about Sarith, she blames herself for not paying more attention to the drow that has been tagging along. Her concern is with the group and Stool, so she never really thought about Sarith much. She wonders if his behavior is related to the unusual things happening lately reported by Hemeth. She then thinks of Derendil, for there was something off about the quaggoth as well. From now on, she will make a mental note to observe Sarith more closely but discreetly. (Insight: 25)

Kaylyn closes her eyes as the voice is heard in her mind.
"I've felt my mind probed a couple of times the last few days. Yesterday was the worst but I set it aside and didn't worry about it. Now a voice and I recall the last few days. Zeno spends most of their times around rest trying to ingratiate himself with Hemeth, learn more about him, whether he works alone or is affiliated with a organization. The cagey responses from Sarith make Zeno suspicious, along with the information from Hemeth, and he begins to study him, to see if perhaps there is more to him than what he lets on. The drow kept demon slaves...
At the voice in their heads, almost without thinking, Zeno’s hand flies to his crossbow. He shakes his head, “Trap. Definitely trap. We can look, but definitely trap.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Rhayna:
As Rhayna reflects back on the events of the recent past, she examines her memories and looks for patterns. It occurs to her that Sarith seems to have some kind of amnesia that correlates with every encounter with demons so far, including the flying demons at Velkynvelve, the attack in the tunnels, and the arrival of Demogorgon. Perhaps he is afflicted with some kind of madness or traumatic stress, but then from what Rhayna knows, most drow seem accustomed to the presence of demons. Derendil on the other hand seemed more lucid and most like his elven self whenever demons were near, and more bestial on other occasions.
Zeno:
Talking secretly is more difficult now that Hemeth has lost one hand, but he also opens up and speaks more candidly as time goes on. Zeno learns that Hemeth works alone, preferring not to share decision-making ... or profits. He is very much the merchant, and seems to have a good sense of where and when to make a deal, picking up on potential conflicts and knowing which side to sell to at what time to maximise the profitability of any conflict. So far with the group he hasn't shown any interest in their goals or troubles, or frankly with their fate, but only sees the opportunity to make some coin as a guide. But privately he warns Zeno that once they arrive at Gracklstugh, there is a good chance that the duergar will see them as valuable stock for the slave market. Other than that, there doesn't seem to be any hidden agenda with Hemeth, and Zeno doubts that the merchant would sell them out.
A disembodied voice in the mind is always a bit disconcerting, but after recent events, it is downright unnerving, especially for some. Kastix holds his head in his hands while Sarith and Zeno look around furtively. Hemeth seems curious, and says he has stopped here before but never heard any such thing. Kaylyn's impression of the voice is very different from the one in the Weeping Deep - it is not oppressive and alien but innocent and genuine, albeit with a tone of being frightened and lonely. Neither Joetaro nor Sekkar receive any response to their questions, but Joetaro gets a sense of where the voice is originating from - a direction toward the center of the large island. (Rhayna Intelligence check: 12) Rhayna's deductions are that the source of the voice cannot hear their responses but can sense their presence, and is sending out a kind of telepathic distress call.
