"Better straight to the dragon,"agreed Sekkar. "Even if it's not his, he would want to know about it. Have you noticed that duergars were using shining blades? We are in the right place, but I am ready to leave it fast."
Pax looks to the group, "Or we could simply destroy it. One less red dragon wyrm in the world to sew chaos. Indeed, why would we return this to a treacherous dragon who is just as likely to eat us as reward us?"

"Which part of "the dragon here is all that stands between us and the slavers" you did not understand? Unless you know the way to the surface - a very close way, I should add - we have to work with him. No, even if you do know the way, I am not the one to anger the dragon - his memory is long enough to hunt down your grandchildren if you live to get some. He needs the answers and the egg, he will get it."
Pax raises an eyebrow at the lizard man's passionate response but says nothing. Directing her calm look to the others, "Perhaps we can think beyond ourselves for a moment. If this dragon grows into itself it will cause untold hurt and pain, and death, to hundreds of people, with families, and children for hundreds of years to come. Or we can stop it from ever existing. It is worth the personal risk to me. Have some faith that we will find our way out of here in another way. But even if we never do, the evil prevented is worth it."

"There are things at work here that are beyond this egg. We've made a deal with the dragon and I intend to keep it. It is no coincidence that this dragon egg is red and a red dragon lives down here and asked us to help him. Maybe this is why, that they have taken his egg from him. Though it seems he would rampage to get it back if that were the case. But I'll not risk the ire of the dragon in this situation. The dragon has done no evil to us and I will not make assumptions past that."

"I wonder if this was the portal the duergar spoke of. And if so, a portal where? And what was that floating eye thing?"
"Some kind of beholder, I think. Heard of them mostly, folks here like to talk about them - ugly things. Never fought one myself before, though. Never tasted one either... One giant eye... Can be interesting."
Rhayna concentrates on reproducing the obelisk into her Journal.

"Alright, portal, egg, got it. Let's grab that thing and get out of here like Kastix said." Zeno will run down and scavenge a bedroll and waterskin, then return to help the others figure out how to move the egg.
(Is the egg....grabbable? Can someone carry it? And could we get it back the way we came in here?)
Rhayna slowly circles the obelisk, scribbling notes and etching drawings in her notepad. The object is like nothing she has ever seen, and the more she studies it the more she is convinced it is not of this world, and its true function is unfathomable. Kaylyn meanwhile concentrates on the conjuration aura and feels confident that it is currently being used somehow as a portal, perhaps through a combination of its normal properties and the influence of the faerzress in the chamber. Her guess it that feeding magic into it somehow activates this function.
Sekkar knows that a dragon egg like this requires exposure to fire in order to hatch, but can only guess at how much fire this egg has already been exposed to. It may require several weeks, or as little as an hour. Zeno recalls that when they consumed the pygmywort, that all their gear magically shrunk with them, and supposes that the egg would do the same if someone were carrying it. It is 4 feet tall, 3 feet wide, and weighs 180 pounds, so won't fit in a backpack, but could be carried. Sekkar is strong enough to carry it along with his current gear. Pax is also strong enough, but would have to drop most of her gear, including her armor.

How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
(Since Sekkar suspects that Pax would rather drop the egg (totally accidentally, of course!) he would carry the thing himself. Pax is needed to lead the way to the docs, anyway.
As Pax is moving her few belongings from her makeshift carry-all to the duergar backpack (which seems to be stitched out of some kind of black leathery hide - perhaps darkmantle again) she notices some items already inside: a book written in Dwarven script, an ink pen and quill, three days' rations, a 50-foot length of rope made from strips of some kind of intestine, a small shovel, a bar of soap, a tinderbox, a small flask with some kind of spirits (the drinking kind), a smoking pipe and some herbs wrapped in linen cloth, and a small silver flute.
The obelisk is cold to the touch and Pax can sense some vibrations deep within it. Her mind gets a vague sense of the alien nature of the thing that Rhayna detected, but nothing else happens.
Nope, Kastix looked around the best he can but wants to hightail it asap.

"There is trouble coming! There are four creatures approaching through the entrance tunnel. Pensive thinks three are duergar, but they are invisible so he can't say for sure. The fourth creature is not invisible - it is a creature of shadow, an indistinct blur of darkness, but visible all the same."
Pensive will share the images and the feeling of alarm to the others as he heads back out of the tunnel and up to the ceiling in front of the entrance tunnel to get out of the way.
Pax turns her attention to the entrance, standing on top of the mesa cliff. She begins summoning darkness from around her into her hand, the blast of energy ready for the approaching creatures.

"Can we escape before they reach us here?" Dead bodies all around, no beholder in the air - most likely the answer was "no".
If indeed running is not an option, Sekkar would leave the egg (or carefully pit it down) and move to the entrance, hiding in the proper shadows, waiting for a walking one.
