Kastix and Kinyel are both almost within arm's reach and trying desperately to grab the gem, but are still held back by Sekkar and Pax. The gargoyle seems intent to reclaim the jewel and flaps overhead ready to swoop down. Zilchyn and Flink both make a run for it, but have to maneuver around Kaylyn and her mace. But already armed with a staff covered with sprouting mushrooms powered by demon-infused spores, Rhayna steps in before all of them and slams her weapon down on the gem. There is an almighty CRACK which echoes from the walls of the giant cavern, together with a FLASHbut of darkness rather than light, and with a kind of SIGHthat is felt rather than heard, followed by a strange sucking sound that seems to draw negative energy from all around the cavern, inward and down into the gem, which promptly vanishes with a loud POP! Then all is still.
Flink stands there with arm outstretched, staring at his hand and simply blinking. Kinyel groans and relaxes under Pax's weight. Kastix ceases struggling and simply goes limp in Sekkar's grip. The gargoyle doesn't land but simply flaps up higher and lands on a nearby ledge, crouches, and falls motionless. Off in the distance a bestial roar is heard from the direction of the duergar enclave, followed by the sound of shouting and some brief weapon clatter, but then all is again still.

Rhayna’s heart freezes for a moment at the sight of the black ichor, then she goes into her research scholar (CSI) mode. She takes a pouch from her bag (with DM’s permission). From the pouch, she wears a pair of thin leather gloves, then takes out a small wooden stick with cotton wrapped at one end, and swabs the ichor. She tries her best to try to absorb all of it into the cotton, and let it dry for a few seconds. She then takes a small glass vial, inserts the evidence into it, and closes it with a wooden cork. When the Cleric is finished, she puts everything back into the pouch, and it back into her bag. Satisfied that she was at the very least able to collect something from the gem, she gets up, and returns to the pavilion.
She greets Ghazrim before entering. “Greetings, I would like to follow up on my patient, if you don’t mind. Please excuse me.” She passes the Zhentarim leader, passes by Pax and Sekkar feasting on the delicious food, and approaches the beholder. “You should thank the Moonmaiden that I was able to restore your sight sir.” She talks with Lorthuun like a doctor when following up with her patient. “I am terribly sorry that I was not able to help with some of the severed eyestalks though...” She adds as she medically examines the creature further. “Perhaps you need some rest to fully recover.”

Kaylyn watches as each member of the party spilt up to other places. She's initially unsure what to do until she sees Kastix stumble a bit. She moves to his side and helps him walk.
Glancing down at Kenyl she then looks to Ghazrim.
"The culprit was under the influence of a Demon Lord through that gem our companion destroyed. My friend her succumbed to the same trying to save your people. With the gem destroyed they have been released by the power and should return to normal. We will accept your hospitality but in truth what we seek is the passage to the surface. In thanks you could help us with that."
She helps Kastix back through the door and to a seat at the table. She sits with Kastix and Pax and begins to eat.
"The surface, take us to the surface." She repeats.
This post has been split into spoilers, not for secrecy but just to make it more compact.
Pax/Kaylyn/Kastix:
As Kastix flops down in a nearby chair with a goblet of wine, Ghazrim continues speaking. He is evidently fluent in 'mouthful-ese' and responds to Pax without breaking his verbal stride, before answering Kaylyn.
Me? Oh, I'm just a merchant for the Zhentarim Network. Quite the lucrative trade here, if you can stand the place. These underground rats pay top dollar for the simplest goods. Sugar, for crying out loud! Or wood and paper. Spices, cotton, perfumes. Just about anything they can't get down here. It's great business, but... well I think we're going to have to pull out. For a while at least. Things are getting rough down here, and I don't mean just today's little spat. All sorts of nasty creatures crawling out of every hole. I swear, I've even seen demons. Demons, I tell you! And it's not much better on the surface.
There is a brief interruption as one of the guards asks Ghazrim what to do with Kinyel, at which he replies: Ah, just let her go. Not worth our trouble at this point. No harm done, eh? The guard raises an eyebrow and glances briefly at Lorthuun, then shrugs and walks away. Ghazrim turns back to Pax and Kaylyn and murmurs: Where was I? Oh, the surface! Then turning more to Kaylyn he continues: Grateful I am for your help here, and I'd be happy to take you along on our way back up. But I warn you, things aren't much better up top. These beasties have been springing up all over the place, from Neverwinter to Silverymoon. Farms abandoned, with farmer-folk fleeing to the cities. Every caravan needs three times the armed escort, and even a third of them don't make it. I reckon everything down here is climbing up there to escape from whatever is going on down here. So if you're looking to get up top for safety's sake, you better be ready to travel. Me, I'm packing up and heading back to Amn.
Ghazrim finally pauses to take a gulp of wine before continuing. Some folk - I'd say brave but I really mean stupid - are even coming down here to find out what's going on. We brought this elf fellow down with us on this trip. Charged him good money for the privilege. Hehe! Professor of something I think he is, with some theories about what's going on. But I think he realises how dangerous it is to wander around alone, so he's been holed up in the warehouse for about a tenday. Maybe he'll go back up top when we leave. Ghazrim sighs then seems to be talking more to himself than anyone else. I'm thinking after another sleep. Hells, I don't even know if it's day or night any more.
Rhayna:
Rhayna approaches the recently-revived beholder, who replies in a deep and sonorous voice that seems to reverberate through Rhayna's bones: I know not your Moonmaiden, human child. But I thank you for your aid. You are the most unusual meat bag I have ever met, and I am in your debt. As for my eyestalks... did you see who severed them? Was it that ugly gnome? If I ever find that little twerp, I'll pull his eyes out one by one before I eat him. See how he likes it.
Sekkar:
Meanwhile, Mipry and Flink accompany Sekkar as he wanders back across the southern bridge over the central chasm, and back into the duergar enclave. The gate is open and the guards are all visible now and seem a little agitated in the manner warriors often do after a skirmish. Several of them are bleeding from fresh scratches. Seeing the ranger approach, they respectfully wave him through the doors and admit him into the compound. Little has changed inside the warehouse area, save that the familiar form of Derendil the quaggoth is heavily restrained in a corner with a steel collar and chain and under guard. His more savage persona (which Sekkar only saw a few times during battle) is back in full, and he yanks relentless against the shackles and lashes out with his long clawed arms.
Moving onward to the smaller room in the far corner, Sekkar again finds Ghuldur there with Krimgol and Yantha. All are now conversing normally as if in a business meeting, and look up as Sekkar enters, with Mipry and Flink rushing to Yantha's side and embracing. Ah, the lizard returns, says Ghuldur gruffly. Whatever ye did, it worked. Krimgol is back to 'is old self. Well almost - he still seems to insist on wearing these rags. But I hope ye got rid o' that gem, because neither of 'em want t' see it again. We've 'ad a talk and decided to put all that trouble behind us. I've even agreed to some reparations fer the gnomes we killed.
Krimgol says nothing, but Yantha nods and adds: Thank you for saving us. You've done a great service to Mantol-Derith, and you're welcome here as long or as often as you like. When you're ready, please come by our enclave, and I'll see to you're rewarded. Mipry says you're interested in finding the library of Gravenhollow, and I'd be happy to offer my help as thanks. Then with a twinkle in her eye she adds: And if I'm not mistaken, I believe Ghuldur also offered you a reward for your assistance.
Ghuldur grunts in reluctant acknowledgement and continues: Aye, that I did. The duergar chief rises from his seat, walks to the safe in the corner and unlocks it, then removes two items and returns to Sekkar. Choose, he simply says, holding out a heavy belt and a pair of slender gloves. The belt is an old relic me father took from a raid on Gauntlgrym. Wear that an' ye'll be recognised an' respected by any of the dwarven folk. The gloves were made by the drow to help 'em avoid crossbow fire an' the like, if that's more yer fancy. Take yer pick, and we be square.

Kastix tends a bit to digest the information as his head is spinning and his body is a bit loopy, "I rather fight on the surface I get to pick where I fight if needed. At least the surface itself isn't trying to kill us. I'll come with you to surface and getting on first ship I can for sure,"

After the initial face cramming with food, Pax takes the time Ghazrim spends talking to chew and swallow everything. Then, she creates a sandwich of pheasant, cheese, and bread. Though part way through she looks at her own gauntleted hands and looks slightly aghast. She pulls each gauntlet off, revealing her rough, calloused, grimy hands. She mutters a few magical words and the dirt and sweat on her hands seems to dissolve away until her skin is pink and clean. The grime under her nails vanishes. She pulls off her helm and places it on the ground next to the gauntlets, her stringy orange hair falling down her face in sweats trails. She pushes it back behind her ears and returns to the sandwich, pouring a cup of what appears to be a fruit juice. She sniffs it and seems satisfied it's orange juice. When Ghazrim finishes his spiel she looks up at him.
"Thank you for your hospitality. This food is a welcome reminder of home. Kastix here is right, we do wish to get back to the surface...though...if it is as you say, I fear that I myself will have no choice but to return here. Something guides me, prepares me to do work here in the great darkness. And our path has led us to many demons, and indeed demon lords...as we've tried to seek a way out. Indeed, if something is not done, I fear the underdark could become a permanent domain of evil. It would be a fearsome domain to try and invade from the surface....easily defensible by hordes of demons...and allow them access to the surface through all manner of paths. No...we can not let this world beneath the surface become their stronghold. But...first we must see the light once more. Get our bearings, spread the word of danger, and then make our plans. Speaking of which, I would be interested to meet this scholar. Rhayna, did you hear? A fellow scholar. I'm sure you both would have much valuable information to share with each other. Perhaps it could help us create the beginnings of a plan on how to deal with this issue."
With that said, she bites into her sandwich, her eyes again rolling back as she slowly chews the delicious food. She sighs in satisfaction and sits back as if all the weight of the rock above them has somehow been lifted from her soul.

"Please do not mention it, Mr. Lorthuun. I am just performing the duties given me by the Goddess." Rhayna gives her best beside manner, and gives a slight bow. She continues slightly miffed. "As for the little one, I hope that he is far away from here. If he knows what's good for him..." Rhayna barely finishes her thoughts, and she hears "Professor of something" from Ghazrim. "If you will excuse me." She politely says to the Beholder.
The Cleric patiently waits for Pax to finish speaking with the Zhentarim leader, then she hears the mention of the scholar by Pax. "YES!!!! I mean... Yes, where may I find this scholar?? I would love to speak with another like minded individual." She looks around for Kaylyn. "Kaylyn!! Kaylyn, can we stop by the warehouse before we leave? Ohh, by the way, where is this 'warehouse'?" Rhayna can't contain her excitement.

Sekkar glanced at Derendil but first walked to Ghuldur. "We did. Smashed the gem. Not even a piece left. Had a demon inside or something like that. The thing is gone too."
He missed the nudge that Yantha gave to the duergar but fully appreciated the result and took the belt with respect, appropriate to the situation and the importance of the relic. "My thanks. Have to bring others to the surface. But I will be back. If you need help, send a word." "And you too,"Sekkar looked at Yantha, "I'll pick up others and we'll come to your enclave before leaving the tunnels." He nodded again and put the broad girdle around his waist. A useful token of recognition, one can not wish for more. Sekkar adjusted the heavy engraved buckle, listening to sensations (mostly pride of owning the thing) and asked: "Can I talk to him?"He nodded towards Derendil.
Should permission be granted, Sekkar would go to the former companion in misfortune and, standing outside of the reach, studied the quaggoth for a few moments. "Do you recognise me?"He asked slowly and in Undercommon (repeating the question in Dwarvish (he was a slave of the dwarf after all)).
Kaylyn held a cup of wine in her hand and regarded Ghazrim. "I believe we will take you up on that offer. The world is a dangerous place and I would prefer to face it with the sun overhead. Unfortunately I feel in my heart that I will be back soon enough." She then glances at Kastix. "But I will at least see this one back to the surface. We have been through a lot together and my friendship to him compels me to see this through."
As Ghazrim mentions the scholar and Rhayna clearly is excited she laughs out loud. "Yes, I think that we will have time to visit this scholar."
Ghazrim continues speaking, his attention shifting from one to another and to all in general: Our route to the surface comes out just west of Rivermoot, and we usually head downriver to Nesme. To Kastix: You could stay on the river all the way to Waterdeep and take ship from there. To Pax and Kaylyn: Or you could go upstream to Silverymoon if you like. To Rhayna: I think maybe that's where this professor is from. Didn't ask, to be honest. He's in his trance now anyway, or at least he was when I left the compound. While stifling a yawn: Resting, as I should be. To all: Perhaps you'll excuse me, and perhaps take some rest yourself. I'd offer you a bed but we have scant room to spare I'm afraid. You look like you can make yourself comfortable anywhere though. You're welcome to camp here in the pavilion if you wish.
======================
The-quaggoth-formerly-known-as-Derendil ceases its struggling and glares at the lizardman. Finally a few syllables escape its maw: SEK-KAR! When Sekkar nods in response, the quaggoth tries a few more words. You fight good. Hard to see. Bright sword.

Class.

If you need help, send a word." "And you too," Sekkar looked at Yantha, "I'll pick up others and we'll come to your enclave before leaving the tunnels." He nodded again and put the broad girdle around his waist. A useful token of recognition, one can not wish for more. Sekkar adjusted the heavy engraved buckle, listening to sensations (mostly pride of owning the thing) and asked: "Can I talk to him?" He nodded towards Derendil.
Should permission be granted, Sekkar would go to the former companion in misfortune and, standing outside of the reach, studied the quaggoth for a few moments. "Do you recognise me?" He asked slowly and in Undercommon (repeating the question in Dwarvish (he was a slave of the dwarf after all)).
