Looking at the same door in the ceiling as Pax Kaylyn wonders the same out loud. "This room is under the room with the large brain then? Perhaps opening that door and the brain falls or maybe gives us access to the room or maybe even controls for the pool it sits in?"
She continues to look around. Some restless movement from Pensive returns her attention back to the stunned pseudodragon. "How long will this last?" She muses out loud, sadness in her voice. "I'll find a way to fix you."
She finds Rhayna, "Do you have any power to heal Pensive? I do not know what is wrong with him. He can no longer communicate with me and I cannot sense what he senses any longer. Its as if he has lost his ability to think. Those creatures did something to him. The only thing I can think to do is to allow him to die and then summon him again through ritual. Perhaps he would return healed since he would return new? I dismissed him to a pocket dimension and then brought him back but that did not change anything."
Pax looks to Sekkar, "Well, lets see if this works." She holds up her gauntleted hand and suddenly blue electricity begins dancing all across her hand. She reaches over and touches the water, hopefully releasing the magical electricity into the pool. (Shocking Grasp)

Pax zaps the pool and about half the tadpoles shudder and stop moving, floating to the top of the pool or sinking to the bottom. A couple more zaps later, and all the tadpoles appear to be dead.
Rhayna and Kirin consult together over the machine, discussing the various components and their likely function, as well as the controls and how to operate them. The machine appears to generate the energy for the security barrier that leads to the elder brain, as well as controlling whether the barrier is active or not. It also controls various other functions of the complex, including the skullcaps that keep the prisoners in a daze, and all the doors within the complex. Searching for exits, they discover that the only external door to the complex is behind the elder brain, used only on the rare occasions when transporting the elder brain is required. Otherwise is seems the mind flayers simply teleport in and out of the complex.
Kaylyn is assured that Rhayna's most powerful prayer bead can indeed restore Pensive's lost mental function. Dismissing her familiar doesn't appear to solve the problem, but casting the spell again would create a new body and replace Pensive's damaged mind.

After assisting Kirin in figuring out how the alien machine works, Rhayna goes to help Kaylyn with Pensive. She reassures Kaylyn that she should be able to help her pseudodragon. She hold the little one on her arms, and prays to the Goddess for aid. She then casts Greater Restoration from the Necklace of Prayer Beads.

After the tadpoles are all dead, Pax returns to walking around and keeping an eye out for any dangers for the rest of the group. She tries not to touch much else. She peeks up the passage to the upper floor where Derendil is presumably still holding a rope. After Kirin and Rhayna figure out the power controls....Pax says, "Well...I guess we turn the power to those doors off and then get back up to the top and go kill the things, rather than messing with that unused door."

After confirming how to heal Pensive Kaylyn has Rhayna hold off on healing him for the moment.
"You have only one bead for Greater Restoration. Save it for now in case one of us suffers the same fate. As much as it pains me to see Pensive this way I have another way to heal him if need be. Hold off for now and if we get out this and the bead is not needed then do it. I feel better knowing it can be done but if Pax or Sekkar suffers this same fate they cannot be resummoned by ritual."
"Perfect!" Sekkar's eyes were glowing with excitement as he watched tadpoles electrocuted. "Dead enough, good job, sister!"He slapped Pax at the shoulder approvingly and joined the smart team. He would love to see Rhayna working her magic on Pensive, but Kaylyn had a point. Yet... "He is as much a team as we are?" Sekkar still did not see much difference between officially sentient and less so - take kuo-toa, for example. Sentient, right? But so crazy you would rather deal with a bear. "Your call but if we can save him, I'd say we should." After giving his piece of wisdom he returned to the less morally complex things at hand. "So, can we open that door above or not?"
Derendil was there and waiting, still with the rope in his hands waiting for others to return and listening worrisomely to the sounds of battle. "Pax... alive... good,"concluded the quaggoth. "Others?" Assured, that others survived as well, Derendil relaxed a bit and gladly followed command - either stay and continue to wait for others to emerge or get down and help everyone to get up to the door in the ceiling.
Rhayna was about to get Pensive back to his old self, when Kaylyn requested that she hold off for now. “It is a prudent decision. Do not worry. Worst case, we can take care of him tomorrow, or another day, if it comes to that.” Rhayna, slightly awkwardly, pats Kaylyn’s back to reassure her.

(Just to help with the decision-making... There is a large door in the ceiling/floor between the elder brain and the resting pool in area 6. The brain won't fall if this trapdoor is opened, as it can levitate, but can be targeted from underneath if desired. The brain can also be approached from the hallways above if the barriers are lowered. And there is a large exterior door in the left wall of the brain room, which can be opened with the machine but you'll have to pass through the brain room to exit the complex. Also the red flashing is continuing, but turning it off doesn't seem to be a function of the machine...)
