Brand drops (or has dropped?) gently (and stealthily) to the ground, watches the 'guards' for reaction, then moves slowly closer, hoping to catch any parts of conversation, and to note any recognizable faces or voices.
[[Brand is now on the ground in the alley, he needed to be to get the information I gave last turn. How close does he want to get?]]
[[Also, there is something about the shortest of them, that is familiar. Make a straight Wisdom check to try to remember.]]

[[How close does he want to get?]]
If wisdom check produces nothing special, close enough to hear conversation and/or see a little more detail. Brand is now working on the assumption that they are fake guards.

[[Correct. However, despite his voice being familiar, you don't remember where you know him from. Maybe if you saw his face.]]
[[What language are they speaking? Would that be normal for temple guards?]]
[[They are speaking Sorian, which would be normal for temple guards unless they were all Stemian, which is not likely for this group as most of them are tall.]]
Brand sneaks closer.
"Cut your whining," says the familiar voice. "It's just a little water and you'll be able to get warm soon enough."
"But it all seems so pointless." The voice is that of a woman. "Standing here in the rain like this. Nothing's going to happen."
"Maybe not," says the man, "but at least we've learnt something."
"What?" says the woman. "Some rich kid comes to the school. So what?"
"Not just some rich kid," replies the man. "That was the son of Koric Brand."
"So?" says the woman.
The man doesn't reply for a moment and then he says, "How much do you get paid a day?"
"Fifteen lions," replies the woman sounding confused. "And you know that, so why ask?"
"Because clearly we are now dealing with matters above your pay grade," says the man. "Now shut it and let me think."
The person with the crossbow turns away in disgust and looks up the alleyway in Brand's direction.

"I'm going to skip dinner tonight and go to the tavern and get myself some roasted beef," Brand hears a man's voice say.

[[Cool; would temple guards sleep at an Inn? Seems unlikely, they would be locals with local accomodation, does that sound reasonable?]]

Just considering this; first I'm not it's really like 3 weapons, since people can already wear rings, circlets etc. And brand has a spell in the hilt of his sword. With the exception of one of the stones, they do not (yet/even) function as weapons; they are much more akin to the many other devices in game.
However...If they have to contact fingers, then I agree it would be almost impossible to use a stone while wielding a weapon usefully (perhaps this is the 3-weapon idea you are referring to?). That said, he could, I would assert, probably use a shield, especially anything strapped to his arm, and only requiring basic use of the hand -- this example seems very different to the dexterity required for weapon use.
But, the question was not so much about using the stones while fighting, but about fighting while a stone is in the gloves. Specifically, does the presence of a stone preclude use of the weapon? I ask mainly because I want to know if he needs to remove stones from gloves after deactivating the stone before he tries to fight, and if he doesn't , what penalties he suffers?
