Reg walks over to the oak chest under the window and asks, “Did we check in here?” getting ready to open it up unless someone stops him and (wisely) suggests they check it for traps first as well.

Captain Blackhand: Finding nothing, Beric turns to the party and says, "Somethin' ain't right... Lemme go on ahead and have look see."
Slowly creeping out of the room, the Pirate tiptoes quietly down the hall. Sticking to cover and the shadows, Beric uses his mirror to peer around corners and peeks through keyholes as he makes his way forward. On the lookout for traps, he continues until he encounters danger or a dead end.

Moving further down the hallway you come to another room on your left. This room's door is knocked from the hinges. Damp mold covers portions of the walls and ceiling in this large bedroom, and rubbish is strewn liberally around the floor. In the center is a single mattress that has been badly torn, from which stuffing protrudes. Under the window sits a large wooden chest, the timbers split and its lid closed.

Captain Blackhand: Silently sliding into the next room, Beric goes about thoroughly searching the bedchamber for danger, traps and loot - in that order. He's particularly careful to search the chest before opening it.
No traps are evident. Looking in the wooden chest, there are some very old clothing that is molded and ruined. There are some papers in there as well, but they are water damaged beyond comprehension. The mattress yields nothing useable as well.
Captain Blackhand: Again finding nothing, Beric strokes his moustache in thought before leaving the room and continuing down the hall. Using a small mirror to get a look it both directions, the Pirate keeps to the plan of taking left-hand turns as he quietly moves ahead of the party in that direction.

Leaving this room and coming to the end of the hallway, you see the second floor landing with an open ceiling that looks down on the entrance foyer. A hallway travels left and one to the right. Going left you come to another door on your left. You enter and find this bedroom has no furniture, but rubbish is scattered everywhere, and webs cover the walls and ceiling. From the doorway, you can see a glint of light in the fireplace from a small, highly reflective object.

Reginald of Neverwinter:
Reg looks at the webbing in the room carefully, then pokes at the webbing on the ceiling with the tip of his sword, saying, "I hate webs--they mean spiders, but I suppose this old house is too flammable for me to safely burn them away..."

Captain Blackhand: As Reg pokes and prods at the webs with his sword, Beric draws his own blade and says, "Now they knows we're 'ere. We should try to find their nest." The Pirate examines the webs, trying to determine if they were made by Giant Spiders.

Noticing a glint inside the fireplace to his right, Beric slowly approaches as he stoops low to get a better view. Cautious of spiders and traps, he again holds out a small mirror to get a look up the chimney before investigating.

As Beric looks up the fireplace for evidence of giant spiders, there is movement in his mirror just before a spider drops onto his forearm. Being quick to react, he slings it off just as spiders begin to swarm from the fireplace. The sound of the spiders from the fireplace is matched with similar sounds from the doorway as another group beings to descend from above the door.

The chest is not trapped. In opening it, it is empty. You search the bottom, but no false bottom or other hidden compartment is found.

What kind of rubbish is in the room? Anything wooden? Maybe we can make a fire in the fireplace?
