Badger approaches Taban. Despite the man's belligerence and aggressiveness, he couldn't help admire his fighting spirit and determination to not be intimidated. Believing that their adversary has truly submitted and abandoned the fight, and seeing that his other companions are being attended to, he holds out his staff to the semi-conscious man.
You fight well, sir. As you see, it was known from the beginning that you were destined to pay the debt. You could have spared yourself and us the inconvenience of violence by accepting your fate. Please, take my staff if you wish to regain your feet. You should be proud of your skills - that was quite the spectacle!

How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
Tairo eyes Kasaaptu, a red filling his cheeks, "You did not ask, and regardless it is not the terms of our agreement. If you expected there to be no trouble, then perhaps ask yourself why you expected to receive payment for a simple job. Now, that is my money. Either you hand it over, or I'll have to arrested for theft. After we're done here, I will honor our agreement and you will get a well trained, valuable animal for very little, just as we originally agreed. What will it be?"
Taban who listened numbly to Kasaaptu's words, wordlessly accepts Badger's assistance to stand, blood trickling down both legs, burns smelling of sizzling flesh. In his eyes Badger sees a mixture of shame, pain, and appreciation.
With Barty hovering next to Indiana, Sickle comes and says a few words of power. The dog jumps to it's feet in an instant, suddenly alive again, it then begins to lick Barty's face with enthusiasm.
Taban silently watches the exchange between Tairo and Kasaaptu, as the focus in the alleyway seems to have become the two of them.

Sir Darak Darkhall: Sickle's merciful healing magics flow through Darak's injured body, his eyes suddenly opening as he begins to cough. He spits up a small pool of blood as he pulls himself slowly to his feet. The Paladin says another silent prayer of thanks to Tyr as he heals his wounded jaw and bruised gut.
Lay on Hands: HP Healed: 7
Darak collects his sword and shield from the ground before menacingly approaching Taban. He thrusts forward suddenly with Onyx, the midnight blade stopping mere inches from the man's throat. The Knight says coarsely, "I, Sir Da... *cough* ... Sir Darak Darkhall, do hereby charge you with Debt Evasion, Attempted Murder and Assault upon a Nobleman!" He lifts the man roughly by the throat, looking him squarely in the eye - into his very soul.
He continues, "It is the Will of Tyr that Justice be served! Taban, you shall participate yourself in the contest you so love to frivolously wager your wealth upon. You will Run! Live or die, your crimes and sins will be forgiven."

" offering a deal for a pittance of the value of the work involved is called cheating. Are you that kind of merchant Tairo? Is your reputation of so little value? Is your life of so little value?..."
She says a few words in the ghastly and unsettling infernal language, her eyes begin to glow brightly green. Has the sun disappeared and been replaced by a dark gloom centered on Kasaaptu? She tries to get Tairo to understand the situation better. She places a hand on his chest and her other hand is held upright in a sort a half claw. Some crackles of power start emanating from her palm and she continues speaking.
" if any authorities investigate your demise, they will discover it is you who are the thief. That you were killed breaking into Taban's home. A long lost friend we were visiting before our departure into the jungle. Your only testimony will be your burnt corpse....I will gladly hand these gems back to Taban. Be thankful I dont take a triceratops in exchange for our service. You know in your heart this battle was worth as much."
Badger tugs on Sir Darak's cloak as he throttles the barely conscious man, and says:
Urgh, I admire your devotion to Justice, as you declaim this to be, good knight. But there are other options for punishment, as there are other avenues to redemption. Didn't you yourself express outrage at the barbarity of the executioners run? Do you now condone it as a form as penance? Perhaps Taban might be willing to atone for his crimes, and even himself offer a more humane means by which he might best attain it...
(OOC: Darak's exact words were: "Am I to understand blood sport is what passes for Justice in this unholy land? Heathens!" He also said he had no power over the law here... just sayin')
OOC: Sir Darak Darkhall is a very complicated man. lol
He's Lawful/Neutral, so even though he is disgusted by it, the law is the law. You'll notice he participated in the Run without questioning the legality or morality of it. It is Justice that Taban be made to Run, after becoming wealthy waging on the lives of others. It was not Justice that an innocent man was running.

Taban surely was not wealthy. I went through his stuff, pretty a poor dude. Probably waged his entire lifes savings. Part of justice is mercy and a chance to right wrongs.
Sir Darak approaches Taban, he whips out his sword and approaches threateningly. The blade whisps out, mere inches from Taban. Taban flinches slightly, but otherwise stands his ground. Sir Darak lays his charge, and then reaches for Taban's throat. Taban grabs Sir Darak's wrist, preventing him from completing his grasp, and stares Sir Darak in the eyes. A glint of shame and also a glimmer of something....perhaps...hope? He nods to Sir Darak slowly, responding in his thick Chultan accent, "You are right brave Ser Darak of the run. I battled all my life in the pits, earning my way with blood. Fighting, and betting on fighting are all I know. But, as your little wizard says, fate is real and it is impossible to flee. And now, you have shown me my way to redemption. I must make amends. Yes, it is the only way. I thank you for showing me the way. I shall take part in the run and earn my innocence. Thank you!" He uses his grasp on Sir Darak's wrist to pull it down to his other hand in a gruff awkward hand shake. "You want to come with me, or shall I just take myself then?" He seems almost...excited?
Meanwhile, Kasaaptu, with glowing eyes, confronts Tairo. He looks alarmed as Kasaaptu's eyes glow, and the air around her seems to darken, but then he blinks roughly and shakes his head, and then sneers at her. "You are new to Chult. Your parlor tricks are cheap. I see through them. My uncle's a close business friend Ifan Talro'a. If you even tried to slay me here, you would find yourself hunted down like animals. 10% is a standard collectors fee. If you're too weak to take a couple punches, then perhaps you find a new way to live your life. I argue no longer. Give me my money, get your beast, or don't, and find out what happens to cheats and liers in this land."
(OOC: The only person who has looked in the sack is Kasaaptu. And she hasn't examined the gems enough to judge their value anyway, so no.)

" Sir Darak, see that the honorable Taban gets properly healed so he can complete his run at full strength, so he can achieve glory."
" Master Taban, thank you for the lessons you have provided us this day."
With that, Kasaaptu will go with Tairo to retrieve her Dino buddy
What were you attempting (and failing) to do with sleight of hand? Sneak some gems?

That wasn't supposed to post. I was going To plant something on him, then changed my mind. I thought I had erased the top line, guess not, lol. I figured Sir Darak was taking charge of him, he could have Silas take care of it since they are pals...sneaking a gem would be a good idea...
With the group still mulling things over in their minds, thoughts aswirl about who was right, who was wrong, and who has the biggest bruises, a brief plan is put in place. Sir Darak escorts Taban to the nearest constabulary, while Kasaaptu follows Tairo back to the Grand Souk to complete her arrangement. Badger, Sickle, and Barty head back to find Silas.
Silas, you're just completing your snack and starting to contemplate perhaps looking for them when Badger, Sickle and Barty return. Their faces look serious, and they look a bit tussled but otherwise you don't spot any signs of harm. They quickly fill you in on the situation. The path forward doesn't seem entirely clear. Sickle has been clear that heading to the jungle should be priority number one, but it seems some members of the party think a rest may be in order. You wait for the other two to return to discuss.
Sir Darak returns after sending his (enthusiastic) criminal to his fate without trouble. The guards seemed surprised, and also seemed to recognize the warrior as "Path'antu!" "the gladiator from the pits" "I can't believe it's him" "the run tomorrow will be amazing!".
Kasaaptu, Tairo completed your exchange with quiet contempt. He took your remaining gold, took Taban's gems, and in return you find yourself with a "Pack-o-saurus" and all it's leather worked briding, and saddle bags.
You all sit for an early lunch, Kasaaptu's face swollen, Sir Darak seeming none the worse for wear. What now seems the topic of conversation.

Then she tried to be intimidating and get greater compensation for the extra work required. Failed miserably. When it came time to act on her threat? Failed miserably. She didnt want to further endanger her friends or the mission by exacting payment via Tairos flesh. Her Patron is a little upset with her failure to use her new power to end Tairo, but he has a little surprise for her to aid in getting a little satisfaction out of Tairo. If everyone is really that against it, we don't have to do it. Just makes sense legally, logically, and thematically to me.
