Shawn looks relieved, but also troubled. His predicament is out of his control and trusting your party is, also, not something he has any influence over. His lift hangs in the balance as he accepts what little choice he has.
"As I said, I was forced into their service not long ago. I was neither trusted, nor well-liked. They like to beat me as much as these townsfolk. Glasstaff is their... I suppose my... leader. No one knows his real name - they always used to make guesses after they'd been drinking; Stein always earned a round laughs, but I never understood why. They never said that anywhere in his presence. As I was saying, none of us knows his real name. He's human like us, and a wizard too. That's how he got his name - from his magic staff made of glass. They used to tell me his chambers were at the western end of the hideout." He stops to catch a breath and asks for a drink before continuing. Given his sudden talkative mood, you call for a drink to encourage more of it.
"He works for a someone called the Black Spider. It was him that hired the Redbrands to frighten off adventurers like yourselves. He also said to make sure the townspeople were properly cowed - before you ask, I don't know why. Never met him, but he gave the others a shivers, so I made sure I kept clear. Last time he came, he had a nasty looking bugbear with him. Strange thing, though? When the Spider left, the bugbear didn't. I never went looking to fight out why, but I could guess...
"But I'd take the 'bear over the (he shudders) eye monster. Saw it once from afar when the others had been on the drink and pushed me into the room. Pissed myself before they led me back in. It g-g-guards the lower part of the base." His stuttering complements his recollection of the mysterious creature.
"I don't know anything about any Iarno, nor any Gundren. Never heard of them. But, they'd been keeping a few prisoners captive down there near the old crypts before I came along. Never went that far. Bugbears - eye monsters - skeletons. I was just looking for a way to get out."
Finally exhausted for words, he asks for a gulp of drink, then subsides into his seat. "I kept my word. But will ye? I've done what I can to help ye. Surely I can help here as well? You promised."
Naivara nearly chokes on these words. Is it a mere coincidence that glasstaff is a human wizard and they have been asked to chase the disappearance of a human wizard?
“Pay him the gold you promised out of last night’s hard earnings, Bard. I just promised we wouldn’t kill him. My word will be kept. I need to talk to Sildar.” She scoffs as she strides quickly to the town hall. “Follow if you must, but don’t go thinking for a second you can be offering my gold for mere words.”
Careful to remain on the edge of Shawn-of-the-Vegan's vision, resting Bwrb flicks 1SP into the boy's lap. Dexterity roll 5. As she storms outside the inn, Naivara says to a hidden Virran, “Come Virran. I don’t think sentry is needed. There are important conversations to be had.”
She doesn’t wait, nor does she look behind to see if he is following. And you’d never hear his footsteps.
As quickly as she can, she gets to the Town Hall, where she finds Sildar.
She informs him of the battle with the four Redbrands and the capturing of a fifth.
“I feel I am onto something here, Sildar, I need to know everything you know about the man Iarno. Everything. And if you think there is any possibility at all that he himself could be a Redbrand.”
“The manor sounds like it is littered with traps.... and defeating the Redbrands will mean defeating monsters and bugbears, if what the captive says is true. What protections can you provide us? What provisions can the Lord’s Alliance give? We do wish to help Phandalin, here, but at what cost? Some of my team nearly lost their lives in a mere street skirmish!”
”And this Black Spider. Ordering the Redbrands to keep travelers out of Phandalin and also being mentioned in the disappearance of Gundren. What of that?”
”I trust you Sildar. I trust that you will be honest with me and that you will do what is right to help to save this town. So please, what wisdom can you offer us?”
LSA is not happy with Asmodean promising others' money. But then most of us agreed to pool our resources. It seems fitting that most of the coin required to make the gold piece comes out of the shared coffers. The answers Shawn provided inform us all. Those that chose not to pool can contribute from their coffers. She will raise this with Naivara when she returns.
"I... would be at a loss, if what you say is true. It is an unusual twist of fate, to be sure, and an even more unusual coincidence. But I must pray that you are incorrect. Iarno is a member of the Lord's Alliance, and I am unsure of what he would gain from such... choices... It doesn't, however, alter my request. I must know what happened to Iarno. If it happens to be him, then we must deal with that. If not, please find him! Two wizards completing for territory? It is just as likely he was ambushed like yourselves." He hesitates, "But be wary, all the same!"
"As for your other concerns... I am one man. By the time I send for reinforcements, we'll all likely be dead. I will not run and leave these people to whatever fate has now been called upon them. While I understand you had little choice - you are asking a mercenary's boon: Pay me or else. The cost of that outcome is the very people, and more, that you have met: Barthen, Tolen and family, Qelline and son, as well as the rest. You say you have been challenged. I understand. I was a fighter for the majority of my life. But the cost? You help... or you don't. I will see what aid I can elicit from my brethren, but YOU must make the choice. Should you return, the outcome will be known to you.
You ask the questions that I would also ask - but I have the same answers that you would also provide. There is more at play here than we first thought. We need to discover it. For now..." Sildar reaches into the pack carefully stored near his desk; a warrior is never far from his equipment, it seems, "all I can offer is a potion of healing and a handful of gold coins." He places them on the table that acts as his mayoral desk. "They are yours, should you wish.
"And for your detainee... we have holding cells here. Hallwinter won't be happy, but I am sure we can detain your 'friend' for a few days, should you choose to help Phandalin."
@ bwbrb... “that is kind of you to make a payment in advance to show we mean what we say. it’s a bit harsh tossing the coin to the informant when he can’t catch it because he’s restrained”
LSA is reluctant to share the names of the party with SHawn. While put upon by the redbrands, he may not be as naive as he sounds.
She says to Shawn: “She who just left has said we would see you free from the redbrands. But... you said the townspeople also beat you. What was their cause to be dissatisfied with you? It seems to me if we set you free in town, you’re no better off. You will likely be put upon by the townsfolk for contributing to the fear the redbrands have caused in Phandalin. You would do well to answer the questions of the money giver and myself so we can better see what options we have to keep the promise of not killing you, when you are freed”
Like Naivara, LSA is also concerned that iarno albrecht, the wizard that Sildar wants us to find, may be in cahoots with the glasstaff fellow. Maybe they are one and the same. Maybe the reason albrecht has “disappeared “ is because he's changed his name to glasstaff.
Could he be turning into monster plus wizard, driven by greed? Perhaps he's under the spell of the black spider. Maybe the bug bear was,eft behind to keep him in line after the departure of the spider. It seems likely gundren rockseeker is a prisoner in the manor. He's not been heard of by the townsfolk because he was spirited into the manor ruins so his trail could not be followed.
I wonder what the black spider need rockseeker for.
"... I... don't know what you mean? The townspeople never beat me - the Redbrands beat me as often as they beat these people here. I have never actively hurt or worked against the people of Phandalin. I just hid at the fringes. You dealt with many of us, just now. There's likely another half dozen or so more at the manor. What more is needed," he looks at your genuinely worried, "They have Glasstaff, as well as a bugbear, undead and that hideous eye monster. I would hedge my bets with the humans!"
Naivara grabs the potion and throws it to Virran, hoping this time he will have it in his pocket ready to go. She eyes the coin more uncertainly. It is not necessarily the money she is after, it is the safety and security of the people she is beginning to call her team. She wants to see them armed and prepared for the battle they face. If they are following this mission, she won’t have their blood on her hands. She thinks of Asmodean, throwing gold around at thieves like it was nothing, looks at Sildar, takes the gold, and throws it back to him.
“Sildar, we will do our best to save this town. The Redbrands are a big threat. I am not sold that this is one human wizard facing off against another here and I need you to be prepared to face the fact that you have a traitor in your midst.”
”I need you to tell me everything you can about Iarno:
What are his strengths?
What are his weaknesses?
Is he strong in battle?
What might he get out of turning against this town?
Does he have anyone in town that he is attached to?
If we come out of this alive, you, and the Lords Alliance must assure us that we will be in your debt and you will assist us in our recovery and prepare us for our next mission however you can.”
Naivara’s tone lightens and she eyes he and Virran, smiling.
”Saving you from the Goblins was one thing, Sildar, but saving your town from monsters is quite another.”
”I will see that the boy is brought to you. For his own protection.”
"I see you are determined and passionate - this I welcome. I will help you how I can, including sending a missive to the Lords' Alliance on your behalf. You're assumptions have me concerned, yet I pray you are wrong. Still, Iarno, if this is truly him, is not to be trifled with. I do not know him well. On the few occasions, he has been passionate - not unlike yourself - and focussed. He was always pleasant and friendly. He was sent here due to his skill as a wizard - he is strong, else he wouldn't have been sent to establish order. Taking him by surprise would be your best option, killing in an all out attack your next best.
"What would he get, you ask? What would he need? Already an important member of our Alliance, wanting for nothing, regarded well by others. I do not know. I truly do not know, which is why I am loathe to believe it is him.
"I know you mean well... but this isn't a witch hunt. We arrived together - you have as much information about this connections in town as I do. His disappearance is the reason I am here!
"So what do you plan from here? Will your new friends be staying together?"
Naivara nods to Sildar and says: “We have much to think on”
She turns her back, pulls Virran aside and whispers:
“What do you say Virran? We could leave this place and never look back. But that is certainly not what my heart says. I confess, the plight of the townsfolk such as Qelline has touched my heart and I do want to see the Redbrand issue quashed for their sake. But I worry that our team is too new, going into a battle like this we need leadership. We need to band together. Our last battle seemed to be every man for himself and we can’t have that in the challenges that lie ahead. I will not stand by and watch you and the others be slaughtered by an ‘eye monster’ or a bloodthirsty wizard- who I still strongly believe is this Iarno. How do we quickly turn these lone wolves and prepare a team? What will be our plan?”
”Do you think we have gotten from Sildar everything that we can?”
”Perhaps I should head back to Barthen’s and get all of the potions I can and you could go back to the inn and see that the captive is brought in here? Bring the others and we can discuss our plan. We’d need to talk about ensuring we can get that element of surprise on Glasstaff... but that is not going to mean you go off stealthing on your own.”
LSA to Shawn. “I believe I heard you say the redbrands beat you as often as the towns people. Are you saying the red brands didn’t beat you? It certainly sounds like it with your denial of being beaten by the towns people”
LSA is not so sure Shawn is being up front with his statements. Perhaps he’s being truthful about the bugbear and other potential adversaries, but does he have an ulterior motive in what he's telling us? Will he go runnung off to someone to tell tales or is he following instructions, thinking they can scar3 us off with tales of these monsters.
Slightly stung by LSA's harsh glare at his failed coin toss, Bwrb retrieves the 1sp and (from behind), slips it into the lad's pocket. "Good information Shawn, but only part of what we asked. Do tell good Asmodean here more about the "eye monster"; any little detail you can remember. And then tell him how you came to be in the Redbrands against your will, and stay with them. Yes. I think that part is not clear to me. After all, just moments ago they were trusting you to take news of our nuisance to Glasstaff.
Bwrb briefly flourishes another 1SP to the lad but then whips it away, "And a further down payment if you tell Asmodean more about this "Stein" you mentioned who seems bold enough to earn some laughs at Glasstaff's expense".
Bwrb moves back behind the lad, to rest and listen, as he unloads to Asmodean.

Out of suggestions on how to explain further, he simply drops his head onto his chest and ignores further questioning.

Walking in on Swift, BrwBrb and Asmodean, noting the others missing, Stig decides to remain out of sight of the captive and absorb what information he can to help bring himself up to speed.
