Stig, Virran, Swift and Naivara hurry into positions, each carefully sheltered against sight and whatever the elements continue to throw. As Swift moves, she is careful to study the ground and surrounds for signs of bugbears... or anything else! Sight is difficult in the murkiness of the storm, yet the flashes of light would surely alert her to any movement - particularly for creatures as large as the 'bears. The ground, now sodden and muddy, hold no footprints except those you'd expect to find. Swift keeps her attention carefully on her surroundings, but a suitably confident that no further threats are in the immediate area.
However, as she turns to scout around the building near Stig, she does catch a flicker of moment from where Naivara is holed up in the crumbling building. The elf has her bow knocked, pulls back the string before letting loose. A blue-fletched arrow darts from the cover and hits the leader square in his shoulder.
The man screams, as much out of shock as in pain, and the others quickly move to cover him and pull back into the nearby cover of the doorway. He grabs the shaft and yanks it out, clearly hurt, while his friend attempts to barge open the wooden door (strength check: 15). The door gives a little, and he does so again and if flies open, splintering the wood around the latch.

Hearing the sound of the door being smashed in nearby, Stig steps to the corner and looks around to spot the nearest foe. Upon seeing a target he points his hammer at them and whispers "Pierce" firing a bolt of light at the enemy.
Swift lines up her bow and takes a shot, the arrow blurring past Stig. As she releases the arrow, her hand slips slightly on the bow sending the arrow awry. It flies into the now-damp ground and sticks from the mud several paces beyond the Redbrands.
Seeing this, Stig raises his hands and utters his spell. The bolt shimmers through the air, then thuds against the house's wall, missing the Redbrand himself, but causing him to cry out and step back. Noticing both Swift and Stig - and believing them responsible for the first wounding shot - they move to engage the two.
The first to move is the Redbrand at the back who sidles past his wounded companion and barrels up to Stig. Unsurprisingly, the man is drenched; his dark, wet hair clings to his face, making his sneer more prominent.

At the signal for attack, the three other Redbrands move quickly. One pushes open the broken door and moves quickly through the house to the back door. From the inside, it is quick to open, and he moves to flank Swift from behind (still 20 feet away).
The one from the rear keeps to the trees and attempts to hide in the confusion (stealth check: 9) as he moves towards where Naivara still lies hidden.
The final one, injured as he is, makes use of Stig's preoccupation and slides behind him. He is well positioned to launch an attack on either Stig or Swift... but favours Swift. "I'll stick you - then I'll shove yer own arrow into yer guts."

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Naivara sees the approaching Redbrand clearly with her unfailing night vision. She knocks another arrow, pointing at the centre of his chest, and shoots:
Stig curses under his breath at the blows he received but immediately reaches out to touch the foe in front of him. Looking directly into the ruffian's eyes he says "Die".

Stig thinks to himself My Lord Marthammor Duin, I hope you understand when I cast such a spell in your divine name it's actually directed at my foe, not myself... Any assistance you can grant to guide my hand truly would be greatly appreciated.
As if waking from a dream (or an ale-fulled reprieve), Night Hawke and Virran join the fray to finally end the Redbrands. Together, the party made short work of the ruffians, much to the pleasure of the townsfolk. Stig gains inspiration from his god as a pious sign of recognition for his hard, often disheartening, actions. Before settling in for a well-earned evening pf food and rest, the team decided to check in on Sildar and the captured Glasstaff to alleviate worries about mysterious bugbears. Sensing all is safe, they settle in for the night.
In the morning, everyone wakes stronger and more determined that before (gaining level 3). They discuss their options, then visit Sister Garaele at the Temple of Luck. Here, the priestess of Lady Tymora commiserates at the loss of their previous companion, Brandywise, and speaks of the request she had previously shared with the warrior. She hands Night Hawke an ornate silver comb and the instructions to seek out the elven banshee, Agatha, near Conyberry to the east. Agatha, she laments, deigned not to appear before her, but with the offering of the comb, she may do so for the party. Garaele tells the party that Agatha will answer one question, and one only. She requests you to seek out the whereabouts of Bowgentle's spellbook (and hints of the possibility of her order, the Harpers, welcoming particular members into their number).
The party conferred once more, discussing their current options:
* Deal with the orc threat and danger to Phandalin at Wyvern Tor (to the east);
* Follow up on disturbances near Old Owl Well. A former explorer-come-orchardist, Daran explains that prospectors have reported being chased from the area by undead and he seeks your assistance in uncovering the trouble. He says it is a two to three day solid march to the east;
* Thundertree and the druid Reidoth hangs over the head of those searching for Gundren and Cragmaw Castle. The location is marked on the map, but the immediate threats closer to Phandalin take precedence.
Decision made, the party return to the underground exit of Tresendar Manor to confirm the disappearance of the bugbears. Night Hawke and Stig lead the way, monitoring the damp ground for tracks - these are easily found and led them away from the town. After half a day's march, the tracks turn suddenly to the north; the party continues on, but makes no progress in catching the prints' owners. With nightfall approaching, the team settle in for the night.
Camp appeared active, but for the unusual reasons. Companionable bantered between Virran and Stig leads to some entertaining dancing by the orc. Swift, seeking security over dance, scouts the area for signs of trouble, of which she finds nothing untoward. Naivara sinks into meditation, preparing for the evening watch and Hawke begins to evaluate the properties of the just-remembered staff of Glasstaff. A team effort reveals it to be a sturdy staff made of glass, but as strong as oak. Their efforts further reveal it to be a Staff of Defence, that once attuded provides its wielder with a +1 to armour class (while actively holding it) access to 10 charges, including Mage Armour (1 charge) and Shield (2 charges). The team decide that Swift, being a staff-wielder already, would gain the most benefit from this treasure. Swift sets about attuning the staff to her person.
Morning comes and the party retrace their steps and locate the bugbear prints. These become more difficult to track once their reach the well-packed road that leads to Conyberry, yet the skill of Stig and Hawke still allow them to follow the creatures until their footprints disappear into the southern edges of the Neverwinter Wood.
This causes some intense discussion: follow the tracks likely to lead to Cragmaw Castle or stick to the original plan and deal with the problems to the east (Old Owl, Wyvern Tor and Agatha). Concern over party strength and overall likelihood of success wins out, and our adventurers to move away from the treeline and make camp several miles away, back on the foothills beneath the Sword Mountains.
After several days on foot - albeit several days of relatively blissful calm - the sight of Neverwinter removes a little of the tension that comes with travelling in the wild. While nothing untoward bothered your travels, the faint sound of flapping wings or sudden dash of red (always just out of sight) left a knot between the shoulder blades.
The air is crisp with onset of winter; the morning breeze tugging briefly at your clothing as it rushes elsewhere. Later in the day, the winds will no doubt whip themselves into something much more unpleasant, as is oft the case in these climes.
The High Road guides your party back to the place where this adventure once began; a time not so long ago despite the feel. Not far from the gate, you are forced to stand aside as an ornately gilded carriage enters the city ahead of you. It is escorted by several guards on horseback, and is gone before you finally enter the city itself. Bare moments after you've stepped inside, a gnome rushes to greet you and requests assistance <<< Insert Virran's Island Deviation >>>.
Virran and Naivara, sharing a common destination, decide to make use of the day by seeking out the Lords' Alliance Chapter House in Neverwinter - a formal building within the Protector's Enclave (district). You pass many buildings and places of note, including Allis Lhyssich's Hand Crafted Weapons and Magical Weapons for Noble Causes. How all of that was ever inscribed into one sign was a magical and noble cause it itself!
Not far from the Winged Wyvern Bridge - a solid structure that connects Castle Never with the rest of the city, along with two other bridges - is the city's market square. It is here you find the Chapter House of the Lords' Alliance. As you enter the grand two-storey structure into a large open foyer, a balding man comes and introduces himself to you.
"Welcome, M'Lord, M'Lady," he proffers with a nod of the head. "How can I be of assistance?"
(OOC: This was an easy place to start for both V and N, although you have different goals here for the most part. This is open to ALL of the Phandalin Five: until we make landfall again, we will revert to PbP to make exploring individual aspects of NW easier to manage.
Whilst in the city, you can spend up to '3 points of activity'. Visiting the LA will count as 1 point, leaving two points free. If you have multiple things to achieve in one location, it may require a second point to continue. For example, a day researching in a library will take considerable time and effort, not to mention reading. Following up on leads may be included in this or take an additional point.
Naivara - you have 2 points left before your boat leaves. But let's begin with the Lords' Alliance! Over to you.
Virran - You'll have multiple days, but we'll stick with 'Dock-Day' for now.
Stig, Swift and Night - you have 3 points to use, unless you'd like to join Virran and Naivara.
Naivara offers her hand to the man she believes to be Alias Blackwood, whom she has heard much about from Sildar. In her motion, she intentionally makes obvious the ring she is wearing, hoping that her alliance is clear.
“Good Day, Sir Blackwood, I presume. We are part of the Phandalin five, a group who have been working closely with Sildar Hallwinter to secure Phandalin and clear Wave Echo Cave. I hope that you have received my correspondence. We return today after clearing out what we believe was the remaining threat to the Alliance’s plans for the area: Cragmaw Castle.”
“Sildar and Cassius Bladewalker both noted that they were nervous of the Castle. It can easily be established as a stronghold. The forests surrounding are rife with owl bears and perhaps even other beasts, most recently we defeated a grick that was atop the roof. The castle is in some disrepair. However, it has been cleared of the goblin and hobgoblin population that were within. I am keen to hear your knowledge of the castle. In particular, what you know of its use by the enemy.”
”On our first visit there, we intended to rescue Gundren Rockseeker. We went in through the back, found and defeated the leader of the time, a Doppelgänger who was of little use and got Gundren out and to the safety of Phandalin. It was just over a week before we got back there, as after Gundren’s rescue, defeating the Black Spider in Wave Echo Cave was most urgent. In that short time, a new leader was established, a foolish Hobgoblin. We found notes to indicate that he was answering to “Kahran”, whom we are keen to find more about and even track down if, as I suspect, he has ill-intentions.” Naivara hands over the notes they found.
”Some discussion with Sildar and Cassius has led us to the idea that perhaps the Lord’s Alliance should move in and use the castle to prevent it Continually becoming an enemy stronghold. As my letter mentioned, we think perhaps it is an ideal place for a training facility. We can provide quite a clear map of the castle and how to get there to you, and given that it only took a week for a new leader to establish himself last time, we recommend that we act on this and move in post haste.”
”Perhaps you can share with us your thoughts on this matter, and the situation in Phandalin and Wave Echo Cave, and what you believe may be next on the agenda for the Lord’s Alliance in this area?”
"Welcome, Lady Naivara. It is a pleasure to finally meet you in person. You are, of course, very perceptive - I am indeed the Alias Blackwood. At least, I hope I am the only one!" Smiling, he motions to a room that you now notice adjoins the main foyer. "We've received many reports of your adventures, and Sildar speaks most glowingly of your party. If you'd follow me...? We can discuss matters in a more comfortable setting. Eralev, could you please bring refreshments to my office?"
Stepping into the room, you see it is quite comfortable for, if a little sparse: a couple of lounges, a coffee table, a desk - presumably Alias' - and several plants and other adornments. Sitting, Alias continue: "I admit, I was quite curious after the previous missives - both yours and Sildar's - mentioned this 'Cragmaw Castle' - nowhere could I find reference to a castle with such a name. Yet, that doesn't surprise me. From what Sildar described, Cragmaw was likely the clan name for the hobgoblin group you'd been warring with. For them to claim a castle after the clan? Highly likely.
I did, however, stumble across something of interest during my investigations. Tell me, what do you know of Phalorm?" Seeing your blank expression, he fills you in. "Phalorm - sometimes referred to as the Realm of Three Crowns, or the Fallen Kingdom - once claimed rights to the territory on which we now stand. The kingdom was an alliance of elves, dwarves, gnomes, halflings and humans. During its peak, Phalorm began fortifying its borders against orcs of the Highmoors. Unsuccessfully, it would seem. An orcish horde lay siege to the kingdom and their armies met near the Mere of Dead Men. It is said that a tower lies in that area... home to the lich, Iniarv." Alias visibly shudders. "Anyway, long story short... Iniarv destroyed both armies for the disturbance. So what connection does this have to your Cragmaw Castle? One passage speaks of a castle constructed by a human wizard during the era of Realm of Three Crowns. Somewhere within what is now called Neverwinter Wood. Coincidence? Would you have come across anything to support this claim?"
He pauses as Eralev enters and places some refreshments - tea and biscuits - on the table between you. Alias then reaches behind him and gets hold of some parchment and quill. He makes a few notes, before continuing his thinking. "It is my belief now that other such buildings might also exist within the Woods - there were fleeting mention of several others. With Cragmaw now routed, we shall quickly install a contingent of Mistguard, suitable trainees as well as some of our trustworthy adventurers, craftsmen and foresters. Initially, we aim to restore the fortifications to prevent others from overwhelming the castle. The Mistguard can protect the foresters and craftsmen as they work. Afterward, or in the downtime, our explorers can venture out into the Woods to map and locate any additional ruins." He signs a deed and hands it to Eralev, who promptly walks out."They now have their orders to prepare. Would you take the time to share your map with them?"
"Now - onto your final matter. I am unsure I will be of any use here. Kahran is by no means an uncommon name. While not a member of the Lords' Alliance, there is a Lord Kahran Vexis who has been working closely with us for a short while. It would be... unlikely... that they would be two and the same, but it is the only lead I can offer, I'm afraid. I am sure he'd be happy to meet you. Should I send a missive on your behalf? I have no idea where he is at the moment - Neverwinter is not somewhere he calls home. He hails from Ildra, another reason why it'd be an unlikely coincidence the two are the same. That said, he was here not a week past, looking for someone, but left when he could not be found."
Excusing himself for a moment, Alias hands you a slip of paper, then wanders over to rifle through the papers on his desk. The slip of paper carries the word 'Marcheon'. Looking up, you catch a quick wink from Alias. "Well earned, I'd say, would you not?"
Naivara finds it difficult to hide her smile. She is flattered, and it seems a rare thing these days that she stops to think 'The work that we are doing is good.' She takes this moment as Alias leaves the room to catch her breath and gather her thoughts.
'I wonder ifSwift would consider drawing the map? -I know she has been working on her mapping skills.'
As Alias re-enters the room, Naivara does not hesitate.
"I do appreciate your consideration, Alias. I am glad that you see my intentions are good and I am sincere when I say I see the good in the work of the Lord's Alliance. Many lives, young and old, were saved by our actions in Phandalin. And I do believe your actions to install the Mistgard in Cragmore Castle will certainly continue to protect all that we have achieved. Thank you. I am sure we will not regret it."
"I am impressed by your knowledge of the histories, Alias, and I think you are really on to something. There was definitely evidence that the castle was built by humans. We found several human relics including a dagger, chalice and incense burner. I don't suppose any of these will be of use to you? One room, in particular, comes to mind as it was clearly a room of worship created for human deities. Unfortunately, this room and the entire place has almost lost its beauty and has been completely desecrated, but I am certain with the right occupants and the right prayers leaving lips, the castle will be a place that shines. I do look forward to re-visiting down the track and seeing the castle in all its glory. It will be wonderful to see what else can be discovered within the woods. Maybe before too long I can spend some time refining my own skills there."
"We will certainly organise a map to the castle and a map of the castle for the Mistguard before we leave Neverwinter on another adventure. We should return within the week and then I hope to spend some time in the town exploring the library. I am keen to find out some information about the dragons of the area. And I have been researching the communities of the sword mountains in the time of Wave Echo Cave. Leirithymbul and Emerald Farm, in particular. I am also keen to learn more about these statues of Waterdeep. We also need to find a powerful cleric or druid that may be able to help us on a quest at the Tower of the Smith. Do you know of it? Do you know of anyone that may be suitable?"
"We will also be keeping an ear out for further word of this Kahran. Whether the man you know is the one mentioned in the notes of the Hobgoblin, I am not sure. But please be sure to send word if there is any further word of him. Or if you begin to grow any distrust toward this man. Just a situation to monitor, I think. I will have my ways of being in touch. And if you have any matters that need dealing with, please do not hesitate to ask us."
"Now I am aware that Virran the Curious, here, would also like to discuss a matter that has become very close to his heart.”
Alias listens as you recount the treasures found the in the castle chapel. While interested, he shakes his head. “These sound quite valuable – both financially and historically. I am unsure of who would take such artefacts from you – and pay you for them – but I would consider seeking out Renala Vass. She is somewhat of a collector and historian herself. We have spoken, several times, of events in the area and she will likely show great interest in a historical relic! She lives in the Arcanist Quarter. Ask around there and someone will point you in the right direction. But be forewarned… Renala is a little… odd… Lovely. Knowledgeable. And odd.”
The conversation continues; Alias happy to continue chatting but looking slightly overwhelmed at the various tidbits of information. “A map would be good, if the good Lady Swift Arrow has the time. We will, of course, pay for the services. Assuming it is of a suitable quality.
As for dragons, speak to any of the merchants or stallholders in the market square – dragon sightings are not common – thank the gods – so when one is sighted, it brings with it fear, excitement and everything in between! There have been recent sightings of a large beast towards the Neverwinter Wood. It hasn’t interfered with travel along the coastal roads, and with the blight around Thundertree, no one travels there any more so it has been ignored for now. Still, be wary. If the reports are accurate, it’s of a decent size. And I have a feeling you will be heading in that direction, from what Sildar has mentioned.” He pauses for a moment, thinking and speaking to himself. “In fact, it may be an option if no others present themselves. You mentioned seeking a druid? There is one who visits Thundertree. Goes by the name of Reidoth, I believe. He has been trying – for years now – to find a way to remove the blight over the place. I fear he is right, given its expansion.... " He pauses again. "Or else you could seek out the clerics at the Hall of Justice. You may find someone of help there.
As for your other studies – there is the library in the Arcanist Quarter. It is a treasure-trove of what survived the cataclysm. Speak with the librarians and I am sure they can help you – I certainly can’t! Except for Leirithymbul. I can’t say much about it, apart from the little I have found in my other research.”
He takes a breath, before beginning his recount. He is clearly in his element and enjoying the discourse with another interested party. “Leirithymbul was a small settlement in a narrow valley, nestled high in the cradle between the three peaks southwest of Leilon. There was trade between the two places, weather permitting, before things went unexpectedly quiet. It was believed, for a while at least, that an ancient gold dragon guarded the settlement. Rumour or tall tale, no doubt, or else why would the place go quiet? Maybe this Tower of the Smith people might know more. They are 500 years old, didn’t you say?”
“I can see you are getting restless and ready to move. I will be sure to keep you informed of any changes, including with Lord Kahran should I find anything. Swing by when you return from your adventures and I will share any news I can.”
With that, Alias bids you farewell and turns to discuss things with Virran.
Naivara thanks Alias with a nod of the head and assures him that she will be in touch.
I wish to seek out Renala Vass next, please, or try and find the Merchant's guild if they are in Neverwinter. I do hope to offload things before I board the boat.

* Deal with the orc threat and danger to Phandalin at Wyvern Tor (to the east);
* Follow up on disturbances near Old Owl Well. A former explorer-come-orchardist, Daran explains that prospectors have reported being chased from the area by undead and he seeks your assistance in uncovering the trouble. He says it is a two to three day solid march to the east;
Afterward, or in the downtime, our explorers can venture out into the Woods to map and locate any additional ruins." He signs a deed and hands it to Eralev, who promptly walks out. "They now have their orders to prepare.
