Remembering that the needle blights could shoot needless (and not having faced any of the vine blights last time) Olin looses arrows at the needle blights. "Lionel, Ismark, to me. When they swarm us I can try to charm them... Hopefully with better result than the tree..."
Before combat (i.e. surprise round), Mordekai will cast Faerie Fire whilst the creatures are all together.
60ft range, 20ft cube, trying to catch as many as possible whilst they're more grouped together. DC15 DEX save, or they glow green and all further attacks against them have advantage, and can't benefit from being invisible (I'm assuming there are no invisible creatures that happen to be caught in the cube though).
First round of combat, Mordekai will move away to maintain range, and will unleash an Eldritch Blast targeting the vine creature that Meepo hit.
Attack: 8 Damage: 9 (If it fails its DEX save and I have advantage, the second attack roll is 15)
Crossbow bolts, a javelin, and an eldritch blast slam into one of the vine creatures which loses cohesion and tumbles into a pile of vines. Another bolt and a slash hurt another vine creature while an arrow from Olin slams right through a needle creature, sending it's wooden bits scattering across the ground. The 2nd arrow slams into one that keeps coming.

Channel Divinity: Charm Animals and Plants Starting at 2nd level, you can use your Channel Divinity to charm animals and plants.
As an action, you present your holy symbol and invoke the name of your deity. Each beast or plant creature that can see you within 30 feet of you must make a Wisdom saving throw. If the creature fails its saving throw, it is charmed by you for 1 minute or until it takes damage. While it is charmed by you, it is friendly to you and other creatures you designate.
Mordekai smiles at the green glow coming from so many of the creatures before him, and unleashes another Eldritch Blast at a glowing, uninjured Needle Blight.
Having strong feeling of deja vu, Lionel tried to get into that chopping wood rhythm he had not so long ago, attacking first glowing enemies: Attack: 20 Damage: 11

One of the vine creatures goes down with a heavy handed blade strike from Lionel, and a crossbow through it's viney head. Olin's magical branch takes out a Needle blight while Mordekai's blast of magic takes out another.
The battle quickly goes badly for the remaining creatures as the group methodically chops them down into vegetable and wood bits. After that, the group takes down the charmed creatures which stand around, frighteningly oblivious of the fate of their allies. Sweating from the brief exhilarating combat, everyone breath puffing out in grey clouds, the group checks themselves over, and then turns to examine the grove of trees. The skeletal remains of a humanoid lays at the bottom of the tree. It's tattered leather armor is rotting, he or she has clearly been here a long time. The shining battle axe that is embedded in the massive evil looking tree at the center of the grove seems untouched by the weather. Just to the west of the hill is a curtain of fog. As you look into the curtain of fog, you see a white fortress on a hill above a great city. The city appears quite distant, maybe a mile away. The fog obscures all detail, but you can hear what sounds like the echo of a church bell.

Meepo, with Rat in tow, move to the tree and start looking around it. He checks out the body first, then anything that might lead them to this item they seek. He casts detect magic as a ritual, while Rat noses around for any thing important.
"That axe in the tree trunk... Does not look healthy. Do you think we should remove it?"Lionel patiently waited for the knowledgeable in the group to determine degree of danger, but would not hesitate to remove the weapon from the tree.
The axe is magical. Also, Meepo detects something magical emanating weakly through the dirt from underneath the skeleton. Rat's poking about doesn't turn up anything additional.

"Dig under skeleton." Meepo instructs the others. "Something down in ground under..." He then nods to the axe. "Axe magical." Suiting actions to words, Meepo starts digging under the skeleton then.
Lionel muttered about "old fearless adventurers" once again, sighed and yanked the axe out of the tree trunk (or tried to do so), half expecting to turn into something nasty, or the tree to come to life and attack everyone around.
