"Maybe should lock door and take rest?" Meepo suggests as he looks over his companions. "House no go anywhere..." (Meepo suggests they take a long rest in one of the rooms.)
(OOC: Can we just decide to take a long rest whenever we need to? Does it have to fit narratively; do we need to have achieved a certain amount, etc? I guess narratively it's night-time, right? Meepo and I left the camp as most folk were settling down for the night, and the others came/were sent down after us? If we can do that, I'm all in favour!)
As Mordekai finishes speaking to the ghosts of the children about returning to lay them to rest, he realises they might have some more information - they seemed to know about the Nursemaid in advance, after all. "Children, do you know of any more ghosts in the house? Would we be safe up here in one of these rooms for a while? There's not some kind of crazy nursemaid in every room that's going to hunt us down and try to kill us in our sleep? If we are to help you, would you be able to assist us with some further information about this house and any more current 'inhabitants'?"
The children shrug non-committed to many of Mordekai's questions as they play with their ghostly toys. The girl shrugs, "This whole house is evil. Its spirit is cursed like the nursemaid. But, we don't know about anything else in the house. The rot comes from below. We can feel it coming from below."
The sky outside seen through the foggy windows is still dark when the group finishes resting. It should be morning soon, but the day has yet to lighten the night sky. Kane looks must more settled after his the rest, though his eyes still seem to dart from dark corner to black shadow with a shade of fear. Olin also appears to be much better, his drawn cheeks and pale skin having recovered much of their color.
Everyone can go up to level 2.
Feeling much improved, the group opens the door to the dust and cobweb choked stairway and begin winding their way downwards. Aga leads, using her lance to swipe aside the cobwebs as the spiral staircase descends past all of the floors in the house, eventually winding its way into a clay walled underground tunnel. The walls are roughly hewn, 4 feet wide and 7 feet tall, with timber braces every 5 feet. As your feet step down onto the rock and clay floor you begin to hear faint eerie chanting. It must be coming from down the hallway, but the words can't be discerned from the eerie sounds. Everyone except Kane sees these details in shades of grey in the pitch black, while Kane, you're hand feels these details as you walk in the darkness.
Twenty feet away, the tunnel splits going either left or right. It's impossible to tell if the chanting is coming from one way or the other. To the left, you can see a tunnel branching to the right, and then ten feet on, the tunnel turns left. To the right, the path goes fifteen feet to an intersection. Five feet of tunnel past that it opens up into a room in which you can see a wooden table.
Checking the ground, you see foot prints in the dirt that seem to go every which way.
Meepo casts mage armor before they leave their resting area. He also casts floating disk as a ritual. He places the children's bones onto the floating disk once it is formed, hauling them along after the group as they continue onward.
"Meepo no like house..." Meepo says as they get into the area down the stairs. "Rat, go..." he nods to the intersection down the right passage. he then looks through Rat's eyes as the tressym zombie lumbers through the air in that direction. "Meepo scout..." he tells the others as he stands there with eyes closed. the disk holding the two skeletons floating near at hand.

Upon waking in the morning, "I feel much better, thank you all for allowing me to rest. Now, to the business at hand..." As they head down the stairs, Olin resumes his habitual castings of shillelagh and guidance. "What footprints are these?"
Olin looks down at the footprints, hoping to determine what type of creature made them. Investigation, 11 (let me know if that should be a different skill)
"Don't be alarmed folks, it's still me. Just a heads-up before you try to attack me... I just thought, if we are to meet someone down here, it might be good for the Master of the House to be with us?" As he says this, Mordekai casts Disguise Self and appears as the children's father from the painting he studied earlier.
Olin examines the floor. Booted footprints. They were made by people.
Rat gets to the intersection. To the left this tight short hall splits to the left and right again. On the other side, this short hall splits to the left and right again as well.
From here, looking across the intersection and down a short hall, Rat and Meepo both see it opens into a room with a plain wooden table flanked by benches. Moldy humanoid bones lie strewn on the dirt floor. A hallway can be seen leaving the table room on the far side.

"Well, nothing to do but pick a direction and go. Should we try and do so quietly, or would Mordekai like to lead the way, and we follow close behind?" Olin says, "Oh, and the footprints here are booted, not a claw to be seen."

Meepo will describe what he and Rat see to the others. "Everywhere else just halls..." Meepo says, nodding to the room with the table and moldy bones. "Meepo thinks check out room with bones..." If the others agree, then he will send the tressym zombie into the room ahead of the group.
"Yes, I agree - the room first. I suggest we're still sneaking at this point. My disguise should only be a plan B in case we run into trouble. Send in your- ...did you call it a rat?"
"It no rat..." Meepo looks startled and gives Mordekai a weird glance. "Can no see it cat... Cat with wings?" He shakes his head a bit. "Name is rat though..." Turning towards the zombie tressym... "Rat go..." Meepo nods towards the room with the table and moldy bones.

"We should keep moving, I think, though quietly. I do not like it down here. Perhaps we follow closer behind Rat." Olin rises to the balls of his feet and takes a few tentative steps, seeing how well his steps are muffled on the clay and stone floor.
The party moves to go down the hallway, when the air grows cold, a puff of air released from Kane's mouth in the pitch black. The two ghostly children appear just on the bottom step of the spiral case. The little boy shakes his head and lets out a quiet sob. The girl, holding her arm around his shoulder says, in her waivering ghostly voice, "No..please...don't leave us. Don't go...we can't go down here.."
The ghosts give off a faint nimbus of light allowing Kane to see them in the pitch black.

"Dear children," Mordekai begins, suddenly becoming aware how odd this has become, given that he actually looks like their father. "We seek to lay you to rest. There is nothing more we can do for you other than attempt to right the wrongs that were done to you."
Suddenly Mordekai gets an idea. 'I wonder...' he thinks to himself. "Who told you that you couldn't come down here? Your father? My sweet Rosavalda and Thornboldt, you must realise those rules no longer apply to you in your current condition. I give you permission to be down here. Come with us, watch and observe, and I hope and pray that you will see yourselves laid to rest in peace."

"What need?" Meepo asks the children, moving back over towards them. "Why no stay upstairs?" He asks, the disk with their skeletons following him around. "Meepo take care of bones..." He assures them.
The children seem unswayed by mordekai’s calm measured response and attempt at subtle deception.
Meepo, recognizing something he’s seen in his own life, realizes the children have an overwhelming fear of abandonment. And for good cause. They were abandoned by their parents to die.
