Pizazz's Ravenloft and Beyond

Ulthan "hrmpfh" though hard to say what he's hrmpfing about. His reaction is much like molasses as he scans the area all around looking for signs of an ambush.

Ulthan seems unwilling to punch Mordekai, despite the invitation, and instead looks around as if some funny business is about to occur. 

Meanwhile, the skeleton wanders down to the curtain of light and walks into it....and appears standing next to all of you at the top of the stairs.  It seems unharmed. 

Meepo moves up to the curtain and tries to check around it to see if there is a way to disable it... investigation: 24

Meepo doesn't see how to disable the magical light curtain, but he does see it aligns with the two statues in the alcoves, and doesn't go behind the statues.  A normal person couldn't fit, but someone small like Meepo could squeeze behind the statue and maybe avoid the curtain. 

Do those statues look like they can be moved?

Nope. They are ten feet tall, thousands of pounds, and look securely fastened to the floor. 

Then it's up to Meepo, but Lionel is there - watching and ready to try other means to get through.

     "It's light...  Are we afraid of light now?" Ketch asks, walking up close to it to examine it himself.  "Surely we should at least test what it does before having one of us sneak past it alone into who knows what danger?"

"I would assume it will safely - for a change - return you to this spot, like the skeleton. But go ahead, that might be interesting. In the worst case - have not we seen a couple of empty crypts around here? Your grave will be most fashionable".

Lionel would not really let Ketch to risk it all alone or leave him in a crypt. He just reached his personal limit of recklessness for today and got to the stage of "better safe than sorry" .

     "I've died before...  I got better," Ketch says and spits off to the side.  He hesitates for a moment and then raises a hand, palm toward the light, and slowly moves it forward until his hand touches the curtain of light.

Ketch steps into the light and appears back at the top of the stairs. 

"hrmpfh Ulthan remember trap like this walk in all fleshy walk out all skeleton good trap tricked the other necromancer too hrmpfh."

     Ketch harrumphs. 

     "We could just hammer away at the statues...  Given a fortnight we may be able to bring them down," Ketch said with a shrug.

"Meepo try..." Meepo says, moving to try to squeeze behind one of the statues.

Meepo squeezes through and finds himself on the far side of the curtain of light. Down the broad steps in front of him is the scene Rat had already showed him. 

What do you see, Meepo? Did you find the Mother? Or, more importantly, any useful relics? Does it lead anywhere? Do you need any assistance?"

(DM, how long would Mordekai's Hex still have left on it?)

(Re: Hex, Last time i saw Hex was against the shadows, which was prior to the long rest....so it's long expired.)

Was that not a short rest? Anyway, no worries. Then, if Mordekai isn't concentrating on Hex, he'll cast Darkness on the right hand statue, making sure that part of the light wall is in the radius. 

Unfortunately the magical light continues to emanate in the darkness.....though can only be seen in the sphere of magical darkness by those with darkvision.

Meepo heads down and reads the inscriptions on the two coffins. "Says king..." He says, pointing to the first of the coffins. "This say queen." He says, pointing to the second. "Queen mother?" He asks, glancing back up the stairs to the others. He looks over the 'queen' coffin a bit closer, with Rat's help...
