Vallen would look to Callie and nod, “What is the significance of the obelisk and this area?”
Cailee turned to Vallen and replied, "I believe this obelisk has a connection to my Lord, Lugh." Cailee spoke broadly to the rest of the group, "I don't know who or what she would want to summon; maybe an aspect of Lugh himself?" Cailee started to mutter incoherently to herself. She was even less sure that instigating a fight would result in a positive experience.
Cailee started to pray in her head that Lugh, or anyone else listening, might give her a sign; she wrought her brain for any possible explanation that she may have found in her studies or meditations.
Valyncia is not sure if this person is a villain or simply an unusual druid of some kind. Part of her feels an urge to attack, while another doesn't wish to harm someone needlessly. She turns to Cailee and Kairn to see what they are doing, or if they can offer her advice.
"I've never seen anything like this before, Kairn."She tells the dwarf, "I'll follow you into battle if we need to. I defer to your wisdom."
The hyenas have dug several feet into the ground at this point with no sign of stopping. You can see their claws tearing at the soil doing as they seem to be commanded by the woman.
Cailee would recognize...
That the clothes the woman is wearing reminded her of the traditional robes of the monks at the monastery she had spent so many years studying. It is only now that can she see the woman for what she really was. Cailee spent most of her time in the monastery studying with the monks that dealt with the teachings of Lugh. It was a small group there that spent more of their time in the green spaces of the monastery as they did in the library. The strange woman before Cailee was one of the monk's she'd only seen a few times over the many years of her service. She'd often be tending to the elder monk's that weren't long for the world as their caregiver. It was a rather sacred position among the order and only a few were given the title of Shepherd. It was their role in making sure the passage through death was as tranquil as possible.
Cailee isn't able to tell if the woman has simply gone mad or if she was tasked to perform this ritual by the order.
“I have ideas”, says Xinq, looking particularly uncomfortable, before lapsing into silence.
Jubal waited for Xinq's idea for a bit before realizing the Kobold was remaining quiet; he appeared to be as hesitant as everyone else.
As the others spoke hurridly, he watched the hole being dug grow, becoming more and more anxious as it did. While it was true that whatever this was might be harmless, it certainly looked suspect.
Another idea crossed his mind. He tried to bounce it to the others as quickly as he could.
"What about a harmless spell? One that doesn't hurt her, but just makes her laugh, stopping the ritual?" Of course, it was possible that ANY interruption of the ritual could be dangerous; if the hyenas were in the woman's thrall and she suddenly stopped her casting, there was a chance they could attack her. Or everyone watching. Or both.
With mounting tension and frustration, Jubal waited to see what the others thought.
Vallen nodded to Cailee as she spoke and raised and an eyebrow at the mention Lugh and then looking over the ritual and person performing it. He try to recall and think upon the connection that Merveille had with Lugh and how they interacted, to if there may be something that could help the situation at hand. He would close his eyes and take a knee to say a prayer to Merveille, hoping for some sort of guidance or a sign.
"Wait! I recognize this woman. She works at the monastery I'm from," Cailee exclaimed in sudden realization. She wasn't very familiar with this woman, but she didn't think she was particularly malevolent. All she really knew was that she was a Shepherd for the older monks, but she wasn't sure that this ritual had anything to do with the passing on of elders. Cailee tried to think of the worst case scenario; she didn't really want to deal with four angry hyenas if they were no longer under the control of this woman, but this ritual was too suspicious to just ignore. "If we want to interrupt the ritual, I can try to create water over her head. I don't know if she'll break the ritual, but she definitely won't get hurt... you know, unless she's like, made of fire or something."
"Do whatever you must to interrupt the ritual. I'll protect you from the creatures if it comes to that." Valyncia assured the group as she took a defensive stance.
Jubal nodded toward Valyncia, then turned to address the firbolg.
"Let's try your water spell first. If that fails to stop her, maybe my laughing spell will work."
Jubal will ready his spell, Tasha's Hideous Laughter. He'll cast it after Cailee tries to get her attention with water, if the woman doesn't stop casting the ritual before the turn ends (a few seconds, basically.) If the water works, he'll drop his concentration on the spell to dissipate it.
(( Definitely going to be eager to see how this plays out come Monday. ))
As you all stand guard and at the ready, Cailee forms the ball of water in the air and it suspends for just a moment. As it moves around the head of the woman, the dancing and chanting suddenly stop as you hear the sounds of gurgling. The suspension of the water falls to the ground in a splash and the woman falls to her knees gasping for air. It's unclear if she even notices you are there. In a coughing fit, she spits up a fair amount of water she must have breathed in. The digging immediately stops as the hyenas look to each other and suddenly flee deeper into the forest.
Jubal dismissed his readied spell, relieved that he didn't have to seize control of the woman's mind. With the hyenas fleeing into the forest, soon the only real sound to be heard was the woman coughing.
"Madam, are you alright?"
He still clutched his flute, even as he slowly, slowly began to approach the woman.
Jubal's intention is to simply help the woman up and, once ensuring she's OK, to begin asking questions. We'll see if it gets that far....
Looking over her, she seems uninjured. Her clothes show the signs of some amount of travel, but nothing of great note beyond that. Feeling a bit of relief that the hyenas have left, you able to drop your alerted state to a more reasonable level for being in the middle of the forest.
The hyenas were able to dig several feet into the clay before they were stopped. You're uncertain what they may have been after as you just see a lot of red clay. A breeze flows through the grove as distant thunder announces an approaching storm.
Svent comes out of the brush and approaches the group, still scanning the forest for any sign of new danger. To Cailee, "This one is your tribe? It is good we did not kill it."
The forest seems void of immediate threats though the tall trees and thick vegetation offers plenty of places for things to hide. As Svent scans the trees, he starts to realize that most of the animals that should be here are absent. It's unclear if it's due to the changing of the seasons, the approaching storm, or if it had something to do with what the woman was doing.
Valyncia nods in agreement as she steps forward, "It would have been bad if things turned violent."Even though she said that she remained cautious. It was still unclear what this woman was capable of or what her true intentions were. She moved up next to the woman like a guard, keeping ready in case she did anything potentially threatening. "Do you want to try talking to her Cailee?"

Xinq is now clutching his head and rocking backwards and forwards. “Voices. Not in my head. Can’t hear the gods.”
Kairn nods toward the others. That's as good a plan as any...I'd hate ta attack an innocent woman. But just in case...
Kairn readies a command spell as further backup, in case the first two distractions fail.
Ready to DM and chew bubblegum. And I'm alllll outta bubblegum.
