Cailee opted to simply defend the woman from any oncoming attacks if the hyenas changed their minds about leaving. She was grateful that they had been successfully intimidated by Valyncia so she need not attack the animals herself. She reckoned they would likely make it back to pick off livestock if given the chance, so she didn't stop Vallen from pursuing them. Cailee didn't really want to stray too far from the group, but nonetheless offered to help the woman safe passage back to the monastery when the events were settled down.
Vallen's hammer smashes into the hyena as the sounds of crushing bones mixes with the creature's cries. It attempts to stand and continue fleeing but falls to the ground motionless.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Valyncia was glad to see her howl had scared some sense into these creatures. She stood her ground and swung her maul at the nearest hyena. After all threats quickly become meaningless if you don't show a willingness to back them up. She wasn't interested in perusing them deeper into the forest however. That would just be a waste of time and life.
That said she also wasn't too concerned when she saw Vallen attacking another one of the creatures. Culling their numbers now would discourage them from trying to attack any more livestock in the fields around Thornwood.
Vallen would hold his position as he took down one of the hyenas. Readying himself Incase one would try to attack but would otherwise let the rest flee.
Valyncia's maul smashes into the creature with a sickening crunch sending the beast several feet away with the blow. Svent feels rather confident that the creatures are retreating and won't be returning especially with their numbers already diminished significantly.
The monk seems to be rather weak in the knees after the exhausting ritual she'd been performing. "Wardens? They are the knights of Lugh, sworn to protect life and forest. Most have been long gone and their posts abandoned." She seems to be getting her wits about her as she looks around. "Is that a Lugh obelisk?," she says with a bit of wonder pointing to the stone obelisk that had been uncovered.
The monk nods and takes a moment to look over the obelisk. "This must have been one of the holy sites." She thinks for a moment. "It looks rather overgrown. The Warden stationed here must have left many years ago. Pretty sad really. I wonder how many are left out there."
She looks where the hyenas were digging and sees the red clay that had been kicked up. "Do you think there is something under the obelisk? Could these statues just be a marker for something larger below the surface?"
Seeing the danger pass, Svent drags the hyena corpses together, then butchers them into transportable portions with dagger and axe. He then gathers an assortment of leftover sinew, bone, and teeth and begins making a javelin.
Cunning Artisan: As part of a short rest, you can harvest bone and hide from a slain beast, construct, dragon, monstrosity, or plant creature of size Small or larger to create one of the following items: a shield, a club, a javelin, or 1d4 darts or blowgun needles. To use this trait, you need a blade, such as a dagger, or appropriate artisan’s tools, such as leatherworker’s tools.
Seeing the hyenas retreating and the threat has passed, Valyncia began to calm herself down. Slowly reverting herself back to her normal human form. By the time she turned around and headed back to the rest of the group it was as if nothing at all had happened. "So, does anyone know what that ritual was supposed to be about?"
"That sounds like a distinct possibility. I wonder if it was buried intentionally to hide whatever was beneath, or if it's simply been buried with the passage of time," Cailee pondered. A part of her would have liked to see the ritual completed to see what was beneath, for curiosity's sake. She turned to Jubal and asked, "earlier, you said you could understand celestial, and you said it sounded like she was trying to summon her master. Can you read what's on the obelisk? Maybe that will give us some clues."
"That one needed the hyenas to dig for it. There are many among us strong enough to dig."Svent says to Cailee, still working away at creating a javelin.
"earlier, you said you could understand celestial, and you said it sounded like she was trying to summon her master. Can you read what's on the obelisk? Maybe that will give us some clues."
The half-elf nodded. The obelisk could indeed answer a lot of their questions as well.
He hesitated a second though, casting a discrete sidelong glance at the woman they saved. Something was bothering him... but he decided to let it pass, turning his attention fully to the obelisk instead.
"Let's see what can be learned from it. Hopefully, it'll tell us all about the target of the summons."
Jubal will examine the obelisk for both text and any other clues. Since we've got a few moments now, he'll use Investigation.
Vallen looks about and looks at the ground, and the obelisk, “Indeed there may be something underneath. If you need assistance I can also understand Celestial.”
((Would Vallen learned anything from Merveille when he prayed earlier? He rolled a 19 for religion.))
Looking at the obelisk, Jubal and Vallen are able to make out the etchings on each side that have been carved into the stone in Celestial. On one side, they see the words: The gift of life. One the other side, they see the words: The gift of death. The symbols that wrap around the obelisk look to be designed like vines giving it a pleasant natural aesthetic with a pleasant styling.
Svent is able to fashion a rather respectable javelin that will work rather well. He finds some amount of comfort in not wasting materials from the killed hyenas.
Xinq sits nearby Svent as he works at his craft in what he hopes is companionable silence. He seems to have something, nay, quite a lot on his mind that he is trying to make sense of and perhaps weighing up how much, and to whom, he should impart.
Vallen would look at the etchings and think upon the feelings he got when he prayed. Vallen tells the group what the etches say. “When I prayed earlier to Merveille, I had one of the strongest connections to them since I left the shrine. There is a very strong sense of balance and order here. Lugh creating life and Merveille assisting in their passing into the afterlife. I wonder if this was not used to worship them both...”. He peered at the obelisk more tapping his chin and then looking at the holes that were dug.
Xinq announces quietly, "Indeed, I believe you are correct. What I don't understand is what role the Wardens had, where they have gone, and why their absence has changed things".
He muses, mostly to himself, "I should return to Thousand Steps, it may be in peril. Yet there is more to be learned in Holden Heights, and elsewhere too".
Svent goes to Valyncia. "It was good to scare them away and not kill them. We have enough meat for now." His head scans the treeline in the direction the hyenas ran. "The one that attacked instead of running needed to be killed. It had no fear of those stronger than it." Svent gives her the javelin created from hyena parts. "It's bones and teeth are now even more dangerous in your hand."
Svent returns to Xinq and the remnants of the hyena corpses and begins preparing their hides. "I can make the hides useful, if you have need, but it takes more time."

Sylnache Ashrain - 7th Sojourn
Svent holds an arrow at the ready, prepared to send it flying if any of the beasts turn back to attack.
Triggering action is if anything attacks any of our group, or the woman we just found.
Attack: 24 Damage: 5

Xinq points a clawed finger in the direction of the closest, or least intimidated hyena.
