The muscular man nods after he gives you a look over to make sure you've been with the caravan the whole time since Caterona. "One of the little lord's men, yea? Here you go. The rest will be paid upon arrival to Holden Heights as promised."
He reaches into his pouch and produces two gold pieces and hands them to Jubal. "If you're hunting for more coin, there's a tavern just over there that's usually more than happy to have a skilled bard doing their craft even if it's not of the musical variety."
((From another campaign I'm in with him I hear that Mattan_Braddus is having internet issues, and would appreciate patience with his current lack of posts))
Svent turns to Kairn again. "If you stay here to learn what happened to your building I can stay as well. Though my wisdom is not of the city or investigation. Otherwise I will travel with the wagons as we first said."
Xinq takes his leave. What had he expected? The lady to hand him a plotter's head on a plate? Being Warren Castellan was a completely different experience when outside one's own domain.
On a whim, he decides to seek out his erstwhile travelling companions.
It was enough for the time being. Jubal excused himself and quickly walked off. The caravan would be moving again soon... so much to do, so little time. Visiting the tavern to ply his trade would probably take too long, but there had to be a smithy somewhere--
Jubal stopped. There was Vallen, along with Svent and Kairn, right by what appeared to be a burned-down forge. There were others there, and they seemed to be... speaking words of comfort to Kairn?
It clicked. Kairn had been from here. That had been his forge. And someone....
Jubal gripped the flute he'd been given without realizing it, as his mind steeled. Thoughts of his to-do list, of even traveling on to Holden Heights disappeared, as he strode into the midst of the burnt forge without a word to anyone. His eyes focused on the ashes, glaring at them, willing them to divulge the identity of the arsonist.
Jubal will make an Investigation Check to examine the scene: 22
Following his snout, Xinq sees Jubal walking past and hurries to catch up. Just then, the half elf stops suddenly. Looking beyond the startled bard, Xinq too sees Vallen, Svent and Kairn standing next to the burned-down forge.
Quietly, Xinq approaches Svent, "What manner of tragedy is this?".
(Thanks for bearing with me... I'm hoping they'll be solved soon)
Kairn looks over to Svent, and is surprised when his vision blurs with tears. He looks down, gathers himself, and once again looks at Svent, squaring his shoulders. I made a promise, won't be goin' back on it. This'll be well looked after, what's left. This town's got good people in it. His voice betrays him on the last word, and he realizes for the first time how attached he's gotten to Thornwood, and why this hurts so bad. His eyes narrow as he thinks about the elf again... and how if he happens to run into him, he'll have a few questions to answer.

Jubal sifts through the remains of the once modest shop. It doesn't take long for him to determine that...
the fire was indeed set on purpose with the intent of destroying Kairn's shop. Whoever did this must have had some motive to upend the dwarf. The fire seemed to start near one of the outside walls where it quickly spread to the remaining timber. Jubal would know that shops like this were built with special care to separate the hot forge and its elements from anything that would burn quickly. From what he can tell, the exterior shell of the structure burned and collapsed in on itself causing most of the damage. Little is left of what actually caused the fire, but Jubal can find a hotspot near where a window had once been. Thinking for a moment, he would believe that something was thrown through the rear window and that item erupted into flames. To cause this level of scorching, the fire had to have spread quickly with some sort of oil or alcohol.
It was more a statement of triumph than one of accusation, as the half-elf had indeed found the evidence he was looking for. He turned to Kairn.
"Kairn, I'm so sorry. You've been wronged. But I believe we can ferret out the one who was the cause... if you wish to."
Jubal quietly awaited a response, knowing that sometimes all one wanted to do after such an assault was to walk away and be done with it. But sometimes, the soul cried out for justice, and if that was what Kairn needed in this case, the bard was determined to do his part to bring it.
Kairn turns to Jubal, surprised.Yer sure it's arson? He narrows his eyes. I've an idea who the dainty, beard-shaving troll-spawn is that did this...he growls, then his features soften up. but if yeh don't mind helpin' make sure, I'd much appreciate it.

Valyncia stepped forward at Vallen's question, "Well I'm not any sort of expert when it comes to finding arsonists. But I'm sure Kairn will tell you I'm pretty good at dealing with beasts. So if it'll make things easier I can go take care of the hyenas along with whoever wants to come. Then you can look for whoever did this without a worry."
Kairn gives Valyncia a smile. Better than good. And workin' out my hammerin' arm might make me feel better. Ta answer yer question though, Vallen, I ain't seen this many in a while...jest killed a group yesterday myself. We ought ta be careful. no sense in rushin' in, but they need ta be dealt with.

Vallen nods to them both, “I can come along and assist you Valyncia. I don’t know much of the town, but something just seems off...” he looked about the area at nothing in particular.
Determined to stop the cries of the beasts outside the city, the group begins to make their way toward the sounds with a sense of duty among them. The caravan still had a bit of resupplying to get completed before it was ready to head out. If the group made quick work of the hyenas, they could most certainly make it back with some time to spare should they choose to continue south toward Holden Heights.
Outside of the few structures that made Thornwood a proper town and not just a settlement, the vast fields and ranch lands extended from horizon to horizon except where the forest in the east provided a thick wall of autumn foliage as a backdrop beyond the fields. There were plenty of reasons beasts would be going after food in preparation of the coming winter. The cries the hyenas were making seemed different than usual. There was a bit of pain in their calls as if they were suffering through their hunger.
((You may roll a nature check if you'd like))
The open fields offer little in terms of hiding places or bunkers where beast or creature could hide. With the crops having been harvested, the fields are rather dry. The sounds of the hyenas is coming from the forest.
that there is pain in the tone. He'd heard their cackling in the wilds before and this was different. Something was upsetting them in a way that was not natural to the forests.

The bard looked around nervously. He'd agreed to come with the others first, then to deal with the arsonist; but truth be told, while he'd read up on it quite a bit in preparation for adventuring, outdoorsmanship wasn't his main passion. Still... he mentally flipped through all his books from his youth, trying to pick out anything about hyenas and their patterns, hoping that knowledge of the threat would comfort him.
He gripped his flute, now in his left hand, tightly, while his right hand twitched, ready to unsheath his rapier.
He finds that the beasts are often scavengers who prefer to finish off the scraps of other predators' kills. That doesn't mean they can't hunt their own food when required and often are found in packs.
"The beasts have pain. They are not only hungry, there is something upsetting them." Svent says, stringing his longbow. "They might not need to be killed, but maybe there is something else in the forest that does."
Vallen nods looking to Svent, “Then we should see what is causing it.” He draws his warhammer and shield and speaks a short prayer to Merveille. Taking the lead to forest.
