Nym ripped and tore at the webbing restraining her and was thankful for the acid attack that had almost taken her out for good as she was able to use the weaknesses it made to free herself. Wielding her longsword, she began sprinting towards Duskbringer before the dragon shook off the ice encapsulating her, sending a cascade of shards down on them. Holding up her sword arm to protect her eyes, the drow felt rather than saw their foe take off. Looking up she then let out a frustrated cry as Duskbringer perched herself safely out of range from their heavier hitting weapons. "COWARD! You are merely hiding behind the spirit that whispers in your ear!"As much as she wanted to somehow crawl up to the ceiling to stab the overgrown lizard in the eye, Nym managed to tear her gaze downward, lavender eyes falling on an all too still form. Rushing forward, the woman slides onto her knees to reach Vesper, sheathing her sword as she tried to evaluate, her hand going to the half elf's neck to check for a pulse immediately casting Spare the Dying. Trying to see if there was any chance for the sorceress still.
Lumen growls and runs off to the side, eyes locked on the pommel and crosspiece of his massive, brutal-looking longsword sticking out of Duskbringer’d back, between her wings. His lute comes out. He strums a power chord. Sparks shoot out the end. And he casts heat metal for 14 fire damage, the crosspiece and pommel glowing red hot.
He looks to Chrys, his eyes flaring, and inspires her with his BA.
Nym kneels down beside the bleeding, broken body of her fallen companion and casts her healing spell, and suddenly a gasp of air rushes into Vesper's mouth as she takes a breath, life flowing back into her soul. Her eyes open for a brief moment before closing again, and then she winces from the terrible pain from the massive injuries that she sustained.
Meanwhile, Lumen strums his lute with the force of a harsh mountain wind, and then hears Duskbringer let out a ferocious roar of pain. You can see the dragon's body writhe and squirm violently back and forth as she tries to shake loose the sword that's sticking out of her back.
Although Duskbringer is clearly frustrated and angry from the "inconveniences" that you've caused her, and injured from her wounds, she manages to avoid the effects of Silver's cold magic this time. She remains perched up on the roof, glaring at you with searing fury in her eyes.
Nym, Lumen, Chrys and Kess are up.
( A save takes half damage, sorry I forgot to say although it is in the spell link.)
Huffing, tearing free of the web, Chrys sighs with relief as she sees Nym tending to Vesper, and refocuses on the dragon. She finally manages to get in range of Duskbringer's enormous body, a javelin already tightly gripped in both hands. "Right," she breaths to herself, narrowing her eyes. Then she raises her voice, hoping to have the dragon focus on her. "Ye unclean thing, infested by the undead! Ye never noticed the crown o' shame ye wear about yer horns? How could ye, ye addled o'ergrown lizard! Yer brain's so rotted ye don't e'en know yer already a walkin' dead!" She puts a sneer in the words, as if she was judging Duskbringer from a place of superiority, knowing fully well that a dragon's pride was their greatest weakness, and punctuates the last insult with a hefty swing, throwing the javelin towards one of Duskbringer's feet.
Given that Duskbrigner is currently on the roof out of melee range, a fact that Enkida may have missed, I'm going to keep her attack roll and substitute hammer for javelin. She can edit her post later if she so wishes.
-------------
Hurling insults up at the dragon with sneering harshness, Chrys drops her hammer, and instead hurls one of her javelins up at the beast with similar intensity and superiority, putting every bit of muscle behind it that she can muster. The missile sails upwards, with a trajectory that couldn't be more true if it had been thrown by Hoar the Doombringer, himself, the God of Revenge and Retribution, the Poet of Justice.
Whether Duskbinger saw it coming, or was distracted by the sickness that infests her, she doesn't avert her gaze at the dwarf, until the sharp end of the javelin sticks her right in the eye and the shaft embeds itself halfway into her skull.
A near deafening roar of pain and horrifying anguish erupts from the jaws of the dragon, and you watch as her head snap upwards towards the sky as she continues to cry out with a vile and horrific screech. You then see her massive body teeter a bit before it seems to slip backwards. A second later, Duskbringer disappears from view, and you hear the grating noise of talons scraping against the wooden surface of the roof, then a dull, muted thud, then nothing.
From the sound of it, you would guess that the injured wyrm has either fallen off of the roof, or perhaps pushed off forcefully in a last ditch effort to try and fly away.
((Assuming we're still in initiative, so this is what Kess will do.))
"Catch up when you can with Vesper, Nym... let's all make sure that addled monster doesn't get away...! She's inflicted enough horror and death and will only grow to bring more if we let her live!"
With that, Kess sweeps her bow over her shoulder, picks up Moonpetal and her scimitar, and dashes in pursuit of Duskbringer; anger still burning in her eyes, a steely determination to kill a dragon within them.
"Still has my sword!" Lumen growls and, nodding at Nym and Vesper, he dashes behind Kess. He concentrates on the sword, wherever it is, and through the still-active heat metal, causes 9 more fire damage. (The range and "in sight" portion of the spell seems to only apply when casting... the follow-up bonus action to cause the damage again doesn't say anything about sight or range...)
Leaping down the stairs two and three at a time, Kess and Lumen (followed by Chrys?) descend back to the large entry hall, sprint across the room and rush out of the front doors of Ravensglade Keep, emerging into the late afternoon air, just as the sun is dipping towards the horizon.
Racing around to the back of the keep, you see Duskbringer splayed out on the rocks. Her leathery wings are limp, and her head is dropped, with her chin on the ground. Lumen’s sword still protrudes from her back, and Chrys’s javelin is still stuck in her left eye. You can see that her large torso is rising and falling ever so faintly as she strains to take shallow breaths. Clearly, she is close to death.
One thing that’s different, though, is that the strange spectral ball of light that was hovering by her head is gone, and in its absence, the dragon looks pitifully alone and as she lies there, free of whatever sickness that apparently controlled her and drove her to this end.
As you look upon the fatally injured dragon known as Duskbringer, a ray of golden light shines brightly on the keep, but due to her position, the angle of the light is such that none of it hits her, and her body remains in the shadow of the keep that she partially destroyed.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Kess just stares as she looks down at, wide-eyed, and looks back at Lumen as if needing confirmation that just really happened.
Unmoved to pity by the signs of death closing in on Duskbringer, however, Kess surveys the death and ruin wrought by the dragon and advances upon her with resolve. Had circumstances been different, Kess would pity the wretched creature… almost.
She walks up to Duskbringer, raising Moonpetal.
All she could think of was Vesper, so broken and hurt, and her anger kindled anew.
”For Vesper, for my kinfolk that you murdered here,” she says in Elvish, and moves to finish her off. “Madness is no excuse.”
(all rolls assuming advantage because of how you described her, DM)
Kess looks to slay the dragon Duskbringer with Moonpetal by stabbing her in the gut: 18, 21
Damage if it connects: 9, plus 1
Kess brings the scimitar to bare if that’s not enough: 9, 22
Silver watched the flight of the javelin, heard the scream and roar as it pierced Duskbringer through the eye. As the dragon fell out of sight, she knew these would be the dragon's final moments. She watched as the others, whose lives of late had been so blighted by this creature, dashed outside. Silver followed. She knew what they would do, but she couldn't allow it, not yet.
As she turned the corner she was in time to see Kessdara raise her sword ready for the strike. She threw up her hands and shouted,
Chrys doesn't follow the others down to Duskbringer -- she races instead to Vesper's side, kneeling by the bloodied elf girl. "Vesper,"she says, pressing her hand more gently against the elf's chest now that the immediacy of the battle has passed. A bit of divine energy flows down through her palms... enough to tease consciousness back into her friend, so long as she wasn't actually slain by Duskbringer. She kneels and watches with bated breath, hoping that Vesper's soul wasn't lost to the dragon's cruelty. "C'mon... ya been with us from the start, kid. Don't let this be yer end."
From the post, Silver clearly followed along when you went outside to look for Duskbringer, and would have had time to call out when she saw Kess approaching the dragon with her blade.
So, I'll leave it up to Kess to say whether she would honor Silver's plea and hold off her attack or not.
Kessdarra stops her blade just a hair from Duskbringer’s underbelly, but stares the dragon down in her remaining eye, making it clear she had no intention of allowing her to leave Ravensglade alive.
“Ask her what you need to… but she isn’t leaving; if she tries to run, I’m stabbing her even if you aren’t done,” Kess says to Silver, s deadly calm to her voice despite the tears welling up and falling down; she held almost completely still, her blades ready to deliver the killing cuts at a moments twitch. “She’s harmed too many and taken far too many innocent lives… addled or not, she was clearly aware enough to know what she was doing.”
Vesper opens her eyes and takes a deep breath when Chrys passes along her divine healing. However, you can clearly see that an expression of terror and shock still lingers with a few tears in her eyes. She looks up and says with a voice that's strained from the pain she's still experienced from the deep, bloody puncture wounds on her torso and the twisted, broken left arm. "What... what happened?"
"Thank you." Silver places a large hand on Kess's shoulder. "You will have your justice."
She makes her way over to Duskbringer's head, where Lumen is waiting poised with his sword, stained with the dragon's black blood. She kneels down, looking the dragon in her one remaining, rolling eye. She speaks in Draconic.
<"You will die here. You have been dying for a long time, I think, in many ways. But the anger of these people against you will spur them to make your death quick. You have this moment to speak your final words. Your glowing companion has abandoned you. You speak only for yourself now. Tell us, what was all this in aid of? All this suffering?">
