With Lumen helping her spot and pick out a suitable target, Vesper ties the rope onto a bolt, loads it into her crossbow, and points it upward. Aiming for the wooden beams just to the side of the bell assembly, she pulls the trigger and you watch as the rope-laden bolt flies upward through the hollow tower. It seems like it has a good trajectory, but just before it reaches the level of the bell, it veers slightly off course and strikes the bottom of the bell instead. It makes a small "dink" sound, before falling back through the tower, clattering it's way all the way back down to the base and landing near you on the floor.
The point of the bolt is now dulled to the point that it's unusable, so you untie the rope and fix it to another bolt, so that Vesper can try again.
This time, the shot doesn't even make it halfway up before veering to the side and hitting the stairs. Once again, the bolt falls back to the floor, it's shaft cracked. At least it didn't get stuck halfway up, which would certainly complicate things even more.
Untying and retying the rope to a third bolt, Lumen and Vesper confer briefly to try and spot the aim once again. Pointing the crossbow straight up, Versper sights the large beam again and releases the trigger. The bolt sails upwards, seemingly on a much better path than the second arrow, and makes it all the way up to the top of the tower. This time her aim is perfect, and from down below, you all watch as the head of the bolt embeds itself into the large wooden beam and remains stuck, with the rope dangling all the way down to the floor.
Krackle, who is positioned behind the bell, sees that the bolt is within reach. All he would have to do is skirt back around, grab the rope and then tie it to the large iron ring at the base of the pivot point on the assembly...
Kess, who has been mostly going through the days events rather quietly, watches with bated breath as Krackle does his work. Should he fall (and assuming Kess' player is not misunderstanding the DM's description), she stands sentinel, ready to catch Krackle if he should lose his footing and fall, lest he plummet to a terrible impact with the floor of the tower below.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Good job guys!" He would shout as the bolt thuds into the wood. He would then attempt to shimmy around and collect the rope, trying not to look down...
(Oh man. Sorry about being sick. I'm kind of posting what Chrys would have done, but since Krackle already made his roll, you could say, we weren't done with the net by the time he was if you want to be fair about it.)
Chrys, rather suspicious of anything that seems to easy, hands part of her raincloth to Kess. "Double up with yours,"she says to the other woman, and holds it out. "Just in case Krackle isn't as nimble as he thinks. You an' I can try to catch him in this." She looks over at Lumen. "When yer done o'er there, we could use a hand with this lil' impromptu safety net."
Moving very carefully around to the other side of the bell assembly, Krackle stretches his arm out to try and grab the rope that's tied to the crossbow bolt. From his position, though, and especially since he is quite short, it's a rather long and precarious reach, and at first, his fingers are not quite able to extend far enough. Shifting his body forward just a little bit more, he's finally able to grab the rope.
He gives it a sharp tug to loose it from the bolt, and for just a brief second, he loses his balance. The bolt comes loose from the beam and clatters all the way back down the tower, and Krackle almost drops the rope. However, his deft kobold reflexes allow him to regain a secure posture and at the same time, keep a tight grasp with his small clawed hand.
After taking a couple of deep breaths, Krackle moves over to where the rope is supposed to attach to the long bar that moves the beam and securely ties the end of the rope to the iron ring. Double checking to see if he did it right, he's satisfied with his knot. Then, grasping both hands securely around the rope, he lets go with his feet and swings his body out into mid air, just below the bell.
Before he does so, though, he takes a look out of the window of the bell tower and sees the vista of the roofs or Yartar below him and the surrounding fields and sparse forested areas that lay beyond the town.
Of course, his weight on the causes the bell assembly to pivot and as he drops a few feet, an almost deafening clang fills his ears just above his head. The very loud surprise almost causes him to let go, but he manages to hold on, and after a few seconds he wraps his feet and legs around the rope as well and begins sliding down the thick cord as he descends through the bell tower.
As he drops, he looks around to see if he can spot any mice, but he sees none, so he keeps going, stopping a couple of times to make sure doesn't go too fast and burn his hands. From below, the rest of you watch as the little kobold slides down the rope towards you, and after a minute or two, he finally lands on the stone floor next you. When he lets go, the released tension on the rope causes the bell to clang once more overhead.
Callum shows his obvious excitement when he hears the bell ring.
"Spendid!!! Oh, thank you so much, master Krackle! You have certainly done a good deed for The Lady today!! And thanks to the rest of you, as well. You have certainly earned Tymora's favor with your actions, not just here, but out in the world, too. Consider yourselves friends of this church!"
Lumen just blinks in amazement at Krackle. "That went... well!" He looks at Callum, rubbing his fingers and thumb together, and tilting his head toward Krackle.
"I am glad I could help!" Krackle would say as he looks up towards Callum and his companions as his tiny chest heaves up and down as the kobold catches his breath. "I didn't see any mice up there but the view is really neat!" He would add as his small tail wags happily across the floor behind him. "I got a little scared up there for a bit but I tried to be brave! I think I need as many lady blessings as I can get since I used up all of my other ones after our last adventure with the mask.." He would add as he begins to catch his breath. "Are we ready to go now?"
"I'm a little jealous,"Chrys admits to the small kobold. "I know it sounds weird for a dwarf ta be missin' high places, but I grew up on the mountains, not in 'em. We've been spendin' so much time on the ground lately that I've almost forgotten what the world looks like from higher up. That was a real treat ya got there, lil' one, so I hope ya treasure it!"she says with a grin.
Turning to Callum, she gives him a nod of thanks. "We did ya a good turn here, and ya did us one too. Callum, ya got a good heart in ya, an' I like that 'bout ya. Generous folk like yerself go a long way ta give a town like this its soul, keep it from becomin' mercenary and cold like some o' them bigger cities down the coast. Thanks for bein' so kind, my friend."
(In case it wasn't clear, Chrys is backing Lumen up here, but from a different tact. She's doing the honey rather than vinegar routine and trying to make Callum feel a bit responsible with some warm praise about being generous, haha.)
When their business is concluded, Chrys turns to the group and says "Well... I'm ready to move on, if the rest o' you are. I got a feelin' we should be checkin' on Dundragon's friend sooner rather than later… probably ain't great to wait too long on that one, in case there's some foul play afoot."
Callum thanks Lumen for his suggestion, and happily complies, fishing into his coin purse and handing Krackle 15 gp.
”This is well earned, my small, but capable friend. Your efforts are indeed appreciated, and so I hope this small token will serve you well in your upcoming adventures. Go with luck, Krackle. May you and your companions find the fortune you seek out in the world. I hope to see you all again, but until such time, please take this gift from The Lady.”
Callum reaches into his robe and produces a small vial, which he offers you. It’s a Potion of Healing.
"I'd need to perhaps see a tailor about the damage to my clothes, as I've no desire to walk about as though I've just arisen from a bar brawl in Luskan. Other than that and seeing Dundragon, however, I think we'd be quite ready to hit the road." Kess blinks, the morning fog clearly still about her; the events of the previous day involving the gnolls had clearly worn on her a bit. "Um... remind me, where are we going, again? Sorry."
"WOW! Thanks mister Callum!" Krackle would say excitedly as he takes the cold pieces and slides them into his nearly empty coin pouch. "I don't think I have enough coins for any lockpicks so I guess I am ready to go.. unless we want to pick up some pies for the road." The small kobold would say as he looks up towards his companions.
(Actually.. thieves tools are only 25 gp and after getting 15 gold I should have enough.. but I guess it is true to character that Krackle might not realize it :D)
Chrys scratches her head. "Not sure what visitin' Dundragon 'gain is gonna accomplish… he already told us what he wants, what he can do fer us, where we're goin', an' the name o' his friend in need. Lest we want ta buy a potion or somethin' from him, I don't think he's expectin' ta see us again, is he? That doesn't mean I mind if we want to stop by a shop or two 'fore we set off. Long as we can afford it, there's no reason not to be prepared.
If we are goin' shoppin', I might want ta see 'bout gettin' a pair o' smith tools for some on-the-road repairs, an' maybe a pet mule. It could make better use o' those saddlebags than Krackle did, fer all o' us."
"Oh! That is a good idea Vesper" Krackle would say as he opens up his pouch and sits on the ground and dumps it into a pile in front of him. "what if I send them... uhh.. this much!" The kobold would say as he scoops up a handful of coins and puts them off to the side before sliding the rest into his pouch. "So how do I send it to them... " He would ask looking up towards Callium and his companions. "Maybe someone could help me write on a bag or a box?.. I.. uhh ... umm.. I am not very good at writing things... It needs to go Emily at the Pudgy Porker inn. It is in the middle of a small town called Coldwater. " The kobold would say as he holds up the small handful of gold, silver, and copper coins. (15gp total)

Lumen turns to Chrys and winks when she makes her play with Callum.
Then, "you might be right. We can look for the dryad. I don't feel like seeking the pool and giant mosquitoes just about yet."
(Lumen, Callum had asked about a suitable compensation amount for Krackle's efforts with retying the bell tower rope.)
Lumen was leaving that up to Callum :)
But if he wants a number, Lumen will suggest 15 gold?
Callum thanks Lumen for his suggestion, and happily complies, fishing into his coin purse and handing Krackle 15 gp.

Lumen thanks Callum sincerely for the compensation, the thought, and the service of taking care of the mask shard.
"So. Where next? Dundragon and then out of town?"
„Lest anybody got more business with him, I‘m thinkin‘ straight outta town,“ Chry replies.

"You might not have enough for thieves' tools, but maybe you could send a few of those coins to your parents like we talked about."
