As the group flies up to the bridge, Merric ponders the fact that, until his...transformation...he alone of the group could not fly. He scans the buildings and the sky and everything else carefully, his thoughts not getting in the way of basic assassinship.
"When you fight something that appears to no longer care about what wounds you do to it, I would suggest using the sword." The voice from the well follows you up as you fly upward.
Lia uses a spell, opening a doorway and her and Al-Ashari are both standing on the bridge when the others arrive.
The Gloomwrought Bridge spans several streets, rising into the Mists of Ravenloft in both directions.
Mists surround you and you feel it watching you. Following the dagger in Al-Ashari's hand you are able to move a bit along the bridge, coming to where a small girl's body lays in the mist. The girl matches the painting you have exactly. She appears to have died of exposure.
A bell chimes faintly somewhere far below you. It rises, and is joined by other ethereal chimes. A carillon rings out, clanging through the streets, echoing in a deafening, glorious, hideous melody. It fades as quickly as it began, leaving you to wonder what it portends.
As the bells fade though thunder replaces it, ceaselessly rumbling overhead, and adding to the difficulty in hearing and seeing. (disadvantage to hearing-based perception now as well as sight-based.)

Merric scans the area carefully before landing carefully next to the girl's body. "The poor wee lass. I'm wonderin' how she came to be here, and how she came to die." Moving carefully, wary of triggering some trap or perhaps some sort of undead situation, he examines the girl's body and the surrounding area for clues.

Kale kneels by the corpse of the girl immediately, checking to see if she might have passed within the last minute or so - as unlikely as that might be.

(Should it be that her corpse is rather fresh (1 minute), he would use revivify on her immediately. If he knows that she has been dead for longer, or can't determine exactly for how long she has been lying there, he will not cast the spell.)
"Well, this is wonderful," he says, leaning back from Cecilia. "We should bring her back to the Duchess, if you ask me."
(Exposure to what? Is she frozen, burned, dried up, heavily poisoned? Is there something that prevented her from leaving the place and experience that exposure? Do we feel something affecting us besides the sound?)
"Agree, the Duchess need to see her daughter's body and bury her properly. Let us get to the Crooked house then."
Once everyone has finished examining the body, Whitegaze will step forward, "If you are done, I will carry the body to the Duchess. But do we want to follow up on the spirit first? Just in case there's a chance they could still be reunited?"
Merric nods in agreement with Whitegaze. "Yes, I'm thinkin' we should be doin' that, takin' the body to the spirit an' tryin' to reunite the wee lass with her wee spirit."
"Well, she's been out here for days, so we might as well let her finally get some shelter," he says, helping bundle up the corpse to carry back to the Duchess. (Kale can sling the corpse onto the broom unless someone else wants to carry it.)
The group makes their way off the bridge and through the city. It takes some backtracking, as the roads have moved since the last time you were at the Duchess's place, but, eventually, you make it there.
Upon seeing her daughter's body, the Duchess goes into hysterical sobbing and is unable to be spoken with or talked to in any meaningful manner. The butler just shakes his head and takes both the body and the Duchess away, leaving you to find your own way back out of the house once more.
Lia stands out in the pouring rain, the constant thunder now echoing ceaselessly overhead as well.
"What now?" She says in a loud voice, making sure the others can hear her over the sound of the thunder. "Back to the tavern to rest, back in those stairs, or do we go to this prison and see what is there?" She shivers, her tunic soaked to her skin with the constant downpour. "I just want to get back to Waterdeep and forget this place ever existed..."
"You, me and everyone else. Not specifically Waterdeep, but I think we all had enough of that place." Al-Ashari sighed.
"And it's a tavern for me," she added after a pause. "There are some things I wanted to try, but at the morning - wherever you want to go, seems like it does not matter anyway."
Whitegaze nods, “The tavern is as good a place as any right now.” On the way back, he’ll try and use his frame and shield to shelter Lia from the rain as much as possible.
Merric nods his head...his new head..."Aye, back to the tavern for now." Though he had the sudden desire for a night-stroll. Perhaps he would indulge himself.
"Hmmm," Kale says. He's not feeling particularly tired at the moment, but the water-logged state of the city is making any sort of coordinated travel feel meaningless. "We can go back for now," he agrees. "Though if you want to try and make it interesting, we can take the stairs. It will be drier. And I've got the feeling we'll have to face that monster there sooner or later."
Merric's lips pull back from his newly sharp incisors in what can only be described as feral grin. "Aye," he says again, his voice silk sliding across bared steel. "Aye, Kale, that be the path. I be tired o' this city kickin' us around, and now it's done for a poor little thing, just a wee little girl. I'm thinkin' it be time to kick back."
A steely rasp greets his words as he draws both this weapons, the new dagger shining in the rain.
Lia frowns, glad to have Whitegaze protecting her to what extent he can, but still soaked to the skin. "Do you suddenly know how to navigate the stairs?" Seh asks the others. "I don't think we know how to get from point a to point b in there right now..." She shudders at the cold rain though. "I am not saying I wouldn't appreciate being out of this downpour, but we don't have any idea how to get from wherever we enter the stairs to the tavern."
"Well, we could try the obvious - thinking hard about where we want to go while we're actually on the stairs. The only way to know for sure is by trying. They're too convenient of a tool to be left unused, and the well gave us a solid lead on how to we might be able to bring the monster down and create a safe network to travel through this shifting city." Kale shrugs. "And if not now, when do we do it? Will we wait forever to tackle the problems of this city? Risk running into that monster right before we delve into a dangerous dungeon? I feel like it drains us just to wait here too long and be complacent about our fates. Let's be proactive and challenge whatever power brought us here rather than cower and accept this impending madness with a whimper."
As you continue along you keep out an eye for an entrance to the stairs...
The Shrine to the Red Lady
Carved lovingly into the rubble, a roadside shrine is surrounded by a small garden that blooms despite the constant rain that threatens to drown it. Painted red, it depicts a lady clad in armour, watching the horizon. She holds a single candle, as if it alone can hold back the darkness.
Next to the shrine you find an entrance to the infinite stairs.
"Well, there we go." Lia says as the group spots the entrance. "What do you guys think?"

Kale is able to determine the girl has been dead for several days.
Exposure to the elements. She got lost in the mist and died of starvation and being out in the rain, cold, and mist for too long.
"Well, she's been out here for days, so we might as well let her finally get some shelter," he says, helping bundle up the corpse to carry back to the Duchess. (Kale can sling the corpse onto the broom unless someone else wants to carry it.)
