For those on the stairs... A padding sound far below you echoes up the staircase. The click-clack of claws on stone, and the realisation you are not alone. A humming sound rises up beneath you....it’s humming?
"O fuge Iabrochorum, sanguis meus! Ille recurvis Unguibus, estque avidis dentibus ille minax."
Whitegaze will ready himself at the sounds (I'm assuming the language is neither common nor dwavish so he doesn't recognize it) turning to whoever's with him, "I think we're about to met whatever's been bothering this place, I'm willing to try fighting it if you are, but we should be ready to leave if need be. Perhaps we can even get it to follow us out of here."
Joetaro turns to Whitegaze. "I'm normally not the fighting type but if we have no choice, then let our weapons strike true, though I like your idea of trying to get it to follow us out of this place. Maybe we should focus on that."

As Kale and the others pass through the Asylum - a very weird experience, walking through walls the way they do, Al-Ashari takes note of what looks like it might have been Cecilia's room once. Kale motions for the others to stop and holds a finger to his lips. Then he inspects the room thoroughly, noting where everything is. The key especially catches his eye, and he points at it. He makes a final check to make sure the room really is empty, before taking a deep breath, ending the spell and stepping out of the ethereal plane as quietly as he can.
He reaches for the key first, pocketing it, but then wastes no time rapidly gathering the rest of Cecilia's things into his pack. He does a quick final search of the room to make sure he didn't miss anything that she may have hidden - remembering well the pet mimic Cecilia had been keeping under the bed in her last room.
Ok, how are you attacking? You see a 20 foot-across blackness. Your attacks will have disadvantage. Do you enter the darkness to attack with a melee weapon, or are you attacking at range?

Investigation: 30
After a very detailed search, you are sure there is nothing else in the room.
You head back through the complex and soon come to a room that Al-Ashari remembers from the brief glimpse in the mind flayer's mind earlier. The room appears to be empty though.
Ok, how are you attacking? You see a 20 foot-across blackness. Your attacks will have disadvantage. Do you enter the darkness to attack with a melee weapon, or are you attacking at range?
I was attacking with a sword and swiping at the blackness. I'll redo the attacks.
As Kale enters the physical realm of the invisible man's room, he pulls out his bandore and plays a small tune.
"The littleness of his movements hides himself -- He invents a charm that makes him invisible Hides in the air... can I hide there too? Seek solace, sanctuary in that hidden place, In a hidden place, we'll stay in a hidden place..."
While singing, air around Kale shimmers, bursting over the room in a wash of Faerie Fire.

Attack: 14 Damage: 12
Attack: 16 Damage: 14
So you enter the darkness then? Since the creature is further inside the darkness area.

(Just reread my data and it is not darkness around the creature but dim light. You can see it just fine. I don't have a description of it though, so will use the below image for now.)
Joetaro strikes out at the creature, both blows striking flesh.
The dim shadows moves to surround Joetaro as the creature strikes back at him... Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: 22 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 slashing damage. Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: 16 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 37 piercing damage. Soul-Stealing Gaze. The creature targets one creature it can see within 30 feet of it. If the target can see the creature and isn’t a construct or an undead, it must succeed on a DC 16 Charisma saving throw or reduce its hit point maximum by 12 and give the creature an equal number of temporary hit points. This reduction lasts until the target finishes a short or long rest. The target dies if its hit point maximum is reduced to 0, and if the target is a humanoid, it immediately rises as a ghoul under the creature's control.
That ... was bad. But on a plus side, they knew that "the invisible man" is here. Al-Ashari sent a telepathic message to both her companions: "Antimagic Field. Can not do much here. Bu we can try to move around. Usually this things are no more then 10-foot-radius sphere. We can try to either leave it, of, if it was cast on us, hit the man with it, may be it will cancel his invisibility? Oh, and the man is here indeed."
Out loud she tried diplomacy: "We are not here to hurt you. We came to help. Would you talk to us?"

Al-Ashari, you detect thoughts coming from a creature, other than your companions, from inside the room.
Kale, your spell has no affect.
All of you, you find that your magic items cease to function. You have entered an antimagic field.
