Gerrard learns from the pair of disinterested guards at the gate that the halfling farmers who were ambushed by the goblins were not from Saltmarsh but from further north. Nevertheless, they were regulars in town, selling their vegetables at the weekly market. There was one survivor who may turn up sooner or later to claim their property; the Guard will hang on to the wagon in the meantime. (Is Gerrard or somebody taking the map case and dice, or are you leaving them in the formerly trapped compartment?) Likewise, the Guard has reclaimed the borrowed wagon and team. You are all pedestrians once again.
In the Goat, Peri has a good enough sense of Butter to know that he is usually inebriated, and tonight is no exception. However, the gruff old guard appears genuinely shaken and scared by whatever happened. "What about Missy? Ye' seen her aroun'? She got one of them potions to fix me fingers, ye' figure? I gotta wife t' take care of, ye' know."
He lowers his voice further. "Coupla' guys, they corner me down by th' docks. Never seen 'em before. They cut me fingers off like they were cuttin' carrots and then warn me not to go after that smuggler ship with y'all. Ye' know Farbern wanted me t' sail you guys out there when the ship comes in. But ye' kin count me outta that. I ain't goin'." He waves has bloody bandaged hand in the air. "I can't even hold a tiller nor an oar nor nuthin. These two guys threatened t' kill me and my wife too if we mess with that ship. I dunno - they got friends in town. It's not safe." He looks around nervously.
Since we were able to recover the wagon in its entirety, Gerrard will return the items to their storage location, unless the others in the party tell him that the items were to be delivered to a particular person in town--in that case he will take the items to that person and deliver them on the halfling's behalf. Happy to leave the wagon in the custody of the guard with the instructions to return it to the surviving farmer, Gerrard does voice his concern that the produce may spoil if it is kept in storage too long, so getting it to market quickly may be more of a service to the halfling owners than letting it rot in the guardhouse.
At the inn, the weary noble finishes ordering the food and beverage, finding a table large enough for the party and bringing the drinks over himself while waiting for the food to arrive. When a party member looks up from their conversation with the wounded guardsman, he tries to catch their eye, waving them over to the table when they appear to be done.

Before Gerrard puts everything back all nice and cozy, Dwal will say: "Let's have a look at that map case."
Dwal will give the exterior the once over and if he is satisfied he will open the case, the cape and opening pointed away from him at a wall,.......just in case. (:P)
Dwal carefully and successfully opens the map case. It contains... a map! He squints at it. This may require his special glasses or Peri's navigator's tools and expertise or both. Looks like a hand-drawn coastal map, but maybe he's reading it wrong.
The guards nod vaguely at Gerrard's comments. A lot of the squash are getting limp, and some of the pumpkins smell quite ripe.
It's a reasonably to-scale navigational chart of part of the coast near Saltmarsh. It depicts a wreck, clearly labelled "Marshal" near a group of small exposed rocks, perhaps 10 miles off the coast, southeast of the city. In tiny, cramped handwriting, somebody has scrawled something next to the rocks that looks like "harries". Near the bottom of the map is inscribed "St. Cuthbert".
Gerrard finds the Goat to be a little below his usual standards, although it's not exactly squalid. A clean-cut, middle-aged man who seems to be in charge prepares a table for Gerrard and his party.
Butter, meanwhile, continues to plead with Peri. "These guys mean business. Farbern better protect my wife. But I'm out. You guys shouldn't mess with them smugglers no more. Let 'em alone. Ye' seen Missy? Maybe she's got a fingers potion. Gods this hurts." He shakes his hand in the air gently.

Insight: 5
The weary noble just nods, too tired and hungry to worry to whom the map rightfully belongs--for all he knows, this is part of the request from the wagon's owners. "Excellent, Master Fiercehammer, as long as the map makes its way back to its proper owner in due course," he says.

"I'm not the one needs convincin' to leave that ship well alone. My partners there are the ones who feel compelled to deal with it. But they're pretty committed, so along I go, weal or woe."
Looking at the guard's bloody hand, he shakes his head. "You can ask up at the temple, but I think those fingers are lost. I don't know that I'd rely upon Farbern or the Guard to mind a sheep, much less save my family. Now, if you don't mind, we've some celebrating to do, and you're spoilin' the festive air." Peri heads to the table with Gerrard and pounds down a pint.
Listening to the guards tale Qiv can't believe that someone unsalted assaulted Butter to try and deter the group from going after the smugglers. "Butter, I'm afraid that your fingers are gone. Short of some high priest restoring them to you, I think you better learn to use your other hand."A grin spreads across his face. He never really liked the drunkard, but didn't wish harm to the man. Being two digits short may well keep him from interfering with the group's endeavours though. "Tell me Butter, who are these men? Are they part of the crew of a smugglers ship? Who are these friends you talk of?"Qiv fires the questions at him hoping to elicit a response. "Answer the questions and I'll tell you where Missy is at"
Butter frowns and takes a long drink from a bottle he has stashed in a pocket. Ignoring Peri, he responds to Qivys' questions. "I dunno. I dunno. I ain't never seen 'em before, but they knew who I was, and they knew 'bout this ship mission. They must got ears." He points to his ear with his good hand, in case you were unclear what an ear is.
Lankus brings over a bowl with some unusual red-skinned fruits. "Primwater's giving out free fruit across town today. Must have come in a ship from hotter climes. You ever seen fruit like this? He's something else."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Dwal
Dwal will sit back and listen to what is going on between Butter and the party at the Goat. After hearing the last of the exchange he will get up, drain what ever is left in his cup and say,
"I am off to my room and some prayer. I feel I am at a cross roads with my deity and must pray then sleep." he says casually.
"Butter" Dwal says, "I am sorry for the loss of your fingers and I am sorry for what your involvement with us has brought you. I can not bring your fingers back but i can heal you from the pain you suffer now." With that Dwal will cast his last spell for the day Cure Wounds at 2nd level.
Heals:12
After which he will bow to the party and make his way to his room. Once there he will bar his door, stow his gear and relax for a few moments before prayer. Later he will drift off to sleep an prepare to meet the next day.
Gerrard smiles when Peri sits down and digs in, saying, “Try the fruit, it’s delicious!” More quietly, he asks, “Master Fenwader, what was that about with the Guard there? Is there a problem?”
After a few more bites and sips, Gerrard adds, “Have you seen the halfling farmer who owns the wagon we recovered? His fruit is going to go bad quickly if he doesn’t fetch it from the guard and get it to market.”

You can see the pain drain from Butter's face as Dwal works his magic. Butter removes the bandages and flexes his remaining fingers, examining his hand carefully. "Thanks," he mutters quietly, and retreats to the far end of the taproom.
Gerrard, Peri, and Qivys remain at the table, drinking ale and eating nameless but tasty red fruit. Lankus brings a tray of dried, partially-fermented fish, eaten with oil and salt, which seems to be popular in these parts. The tap room is half-filled with heavily drinking human guards and dwarven miners, talking loudly. The guards talk about an escaped prisoner from the jail; the dwarves of a spectacular find in the mine, and of a new push to expand their mining operation.
Gerrard manages to get a room upstairs. 5 silver a night. It's cramped and barren, but clean and practical. Below his usual standards, but from what he understands, the best he'll be able to find in town.
Dwal returns to his room at the Mining Company Headquarters.
The night passes, and you are all able to get some peaceful rest.
It's raining in Saltmarsh. It's a dark, cold, early-winter rain – muddy and dreary. The day is yours.
• Dwal is expected at work, registering imports and exports at the wharves for the Mining Company, unless he has pressing business preparing for the assault on the smuggler ship, or other urgent city business.
• If you want to claim the goblin reward and ditch that nasty bag of ears, you'll need to check in with Farbern, head of the Watch, at Hoolwatch Tower.
• The Council is still awaiting your response regarding the job to apprehend the anticipated smuggler vessel. 400 gold payment for success.
• The new double-property you've leased at Crabbers' Cove needs a lot of work (and/or money) to be habitable.
Other possible downtime activities / adventure leads: - Buy/sell magic items with Xondros - Carouse the local bars - Find low-paying work at the docks, with the Guard, in the mines, on a fishing boat, etc. - Explore the city - Take on that fishing-pole salvage job - Sort out that map - Go see Winston regarding his missing shipment
Dwal will make contact with the others at some point in the day and suggest the ears be taken to the watch and the bounty collected. He will also make a purchase of Carpenter Tools.
In the evening he will go to the property and start working on it for a couple hours. Unless anything else happens, at the end of the day he will build a small shrine to his new deity Clanggedin inside one of the dwellings and say a small prayer.
He will head back to his room a bit after dark, practice for a half hour then sleep.
Sleeping late, Gerrard wakes up and wonders if was all a dream. Looking around the room, he finds a mirror and sees the remaining purple stain on his scalp and realizes it truly happened. Finally shed of his ‘weary noble’ title, Gerrard scrubs himself as best he can and emerges clean and well-dressed into the inn’s common room in time for a late breakfast.
He checks to see if any of the others are there or if they have left any notes for him with the innkeeper.
OOC: Not sure who has what items/coinage—the silver coins, the mirrors in boxes, etc. or who they belong to. Hoping someone is around to help him get his bearings (Peri?). Gerrard would like to get a tour of the city, and as they go, take care of some items: submit the ears, deliver the mirrors, and find the halfling survivor to make sure he gets his wagon, fruit, and secured items. If they make enough money, he would be interested in a replacement horse, and Gerrard would also be looking forward to their next adventure—perhaps the mysterious hole?

Dwal stops by the Carpenters' Guildhall on his way to work. A sour gnome named Kanklesten sells him a set of fine-quality carpenter's tools for 8 gold. (She also hires out carpenters, if you need to hire any help.) It'll take a couple of weeks to make the cabins habitable (and crab-proof) unless you recruit more help.
Gerrard tries to scrub the purple stain from his forehead, but for the most part fails. He manages to dull (and smear) the ink blotch somewhat, but this make take a few days... Otherwise clean and tidy, he heads out across the town. It's a grim, gray town with the strong smell of smoke in the air. Beggars and stray dogs abound. Old women leer out of windows at him as he passes, and toothless men spit bright red blotches onto the cobbled streets. Dirty unsupervised children dart through the narrow alleys.
Looping back, Gerrard delivers the ears to Hoolwatch Tower (#12 on the map) where a bleary-eyed and enormously rotund Commander Clay listens to his story and pays him 100 gold for your services removing the goblin threat.
Where is Gerrard delivering the mirrors and looking for the halfling survivor?
