Gerrard and Peri find Winston in a playful mood, modeling some of his disguises and outlandish outfits. Winston is an older halfling, with a deeply wrinkled face and a wild head of curly hair even without the ugly wig currently askew upon his head. "May I interest ye' in some wigs? I have obtained a lot of 75 in a variety of colors!" He indeed can acquire 300 gp worth of diamonds for you, although he'll need a few hours to fetch them. There would just be a 20gp fee for his time and services. He still has the Hat of Disguise, but nothing else of arcane interests.
Kei finds the Quartermasters closed. Her surly assistant turns Kei away. When asked, the thin tiefling refuses to give a day or time when she might return. "No inventory, no trade," he repeats.
"No wigs, but maybe another headcoverin' you can address?" Peri shows Winston the ugly cap so recently 'gifted' to him. "I was just given this thing. It's pretty useful, but doesn't much match my style. I was, however, given an extraordinary hat by this good friend here. I haven't had much occasion for it, so it hasn't seen any use, which is a shame. But I figure, if it's a magic hat, that'd be a good excuse to wear it around all the time. Do you know anyone that could maybe stitch this magic cap inside the pretty one?"
((OOC: Peri would like to combine the [Tooltip Not Found] with the very fancy cavalier hat Gerrard gave him. He's willing to pay whatever is necessary -- silly amounts if necessary -- to get it done quickly, especially if it could be arranged before tonight's Council meeting.))
Rather than bargain and collect from his fellows, Gerrard hands over 320 gp in coins to Winston, saying, "Please proceed.," though he hopes the others might contribute as well (later). After picking up any minor items needed to replenish his supplies (say 10 gp worth--noble upkeep and all), Gerrard pays and waits for Peri to be finished with his transaction. Afterwards, he says, "Off to the Quartermasters of Iuz, then? I believe they have some explaining to do."

Peri notes that Kei's cap is a big, ugly, leather thing that's both comical and unstylish. The captain's hat is a fancy but compact and practical tri-cornered headpiece. Winston lights up at the idea of trying to combine them. He's no hatter nor haberdasher, but he clearly delights at the idea of giving it a try. "It may turn into a bit of a turban. Might give you some extra perceived height. Sometimes helpful when associating with th' tall folk!" says the old halfling. He also happily takes Gerrard and Peri's gold and will have diamonds for you later in the day. They exit to join Kei at the Quartermasters.
Boko remains absent, having gone to see her friend. (See DMs.)
Kei remains in the street, having been turned away at the Quartermasters.
At the mention of a turban Peri snatches the cap back in alarm, appalled at the image called to mind. "No, thank you! Seems a bit extravagant, but I suppose a man of means can have two hats. I'll wear the nice one to make an impression, and the other to keep the sea from my lungs." He gives Winston a friendly goodbye. Wonder where his stuff comes from? Good to see another of the Quick Folk makin' good among the tall races, and he wouldn't want to harm the man's business, but Winston might be able to offer some insight on where that contraband from the cave wound up. Maybe I'll come see him later. Alone.
As he and Gerrard make their way down toward the Quartermasters he asks, "Do you think Xondros is going to give up any answers? They may take some arm-twistin'. And havin access to all that magical stuff is gonna make it harder to twist that arm."
”That I don’t know, Master Fenwader. We could be in for a rough time if we make issue of the minion of Iuz who attacked us, yet the Quartermaster of Iuz is here in town making deals and lining pockets,” replies Gerrard as they walk along.
”For all I know, there could be multiple factions within this demon lord’s camp—some who wish to trade for power and some who wish to take it outright—but I doubt any dealings with them will be of lasting benefit to us,” he adds, which makes him think, “We did buy some magic items a while back from the Quartermaster, right? None of those have turned out false or cursed, have they?”
”All in all, I may be better sinking funds into restoring and staffing the manor house we have been discussing,” Gerrard muses, considering, “But I’ll never be able to live there in peace if we don’t take care of the evil threatening us now, so maybe I should spend what coin I have on a more powerful weapon if I can find one. What do you think, Master Fenwader?”

Peri, in the process of lighting his pipe for the walk, scoffs. "You haven't seen this 'manor house.' It's dilapidated. I suppose someone with very deep pockets could turn it into somethin' impressive again, but what would you have then? The best house in this armpit? I was only suggestin' it because I figured we could clear it out fairly easily, and we've been beat up enough lately that I think it would do us all good to get a clear win. And once it's cleared out, it's outside of town, away from all the snoopin' and meddlin', and there's even a hidden anchorage we could get the cutter into. It served that gang of smugglers well enough for years, so it'd probably be a good base for us when we're not out to sea. And the whole town is terrified of it, so they probably won't mess with it."
He pulls on his pipe, thinking for a moment. "It's a big place, even just the basement where the smugglers lived, so it would be good to have some people to keep it up. But poor Armand got eaten right on the edge of town. Who would be willin' to risk livin' way out there?" After a few steps he laughs, "Do you think we can get Dwal to convince his kuo-toa friends to keep the place up for us? It does have easy access to the sea! What do you think is goin' on there? No one has asked him why they're puttin' up public monuments to him."
”Ah, we’ll, not such good news about the manor, then. I haven’t been there yet, so I had no idea. As far as the Kuo-Toa, we did try to help some in Seaton, but that backfired big-time on us…Maybe that one we saved and got to the temple was able to deprogram from the cult and thanks Brother Fiercehammer for it. I’m not really sure. With the way he and I have seemingly been at odds lately, I didn’t want to bring it up,” replies Gerrard.
….after a few minutes…
As they approach the Quartermaster’s place, he sees Kei in the street. “Looks like we found Master Kei…hopefully he hasn’t bought out the Quartermaster before we get the chance to ask our questions.”

When they get within sight of the Quartermasters and Gerrard hails Kei, Peri gasps with indignation, coughing on his pipesmoke. "Why you no-good, sneakin'... Gerrard, Peri, and Kei enter the cramped offices of the Faithful Quartermasters of Iuz. Passing through the entry hall, you take a seat in Captain Xondros's office. The smells of incense, rotten fish, and smoke fill the air, as though they've been recently burning papers and garbage. In addition to Xondros and Kosrus, a second assistant, a sickly-looking male tiefling, hunches against a wall, a blank look on his face. Papers are strewn all over Xondros' office. Peri notes no signs of anyone departing, although there may be a back door that would be impossible to see from the street. Kosrus looks tense and ill-tempered. But Xondros seems more upbeat and magnanimous than the usual sour demeanor you've seen her in, in past visits.
"So," she says brightly. "What can I do for the three of you today? Are you looking to sell or purchase?"

Peri:
Peri notes the less-frosty attitude. "You sure seem in a good mood. Must mean you've some excitin' new wares to offer, and us with the means to buy, if the price is right! Though really, my friend did beat us here fair and square, so he should probably get first crack." Peri allows Kei to take a look first, and uses the distraction to study Xondros and Kosrus. If she's smilin' it means someone's sufferin' somewhere. Wonder if she's just heard some good news about a rival dyin near Seaton? (Insight: 24)
About to speak, Gerrard hears Peri’s sentiments and decides to wait a moment or two for Kei to make his wishes known. If he does not speak up in a reasonable amount of time, Gerrard will fill in the silence by answering the question.
“Ah yes, as it happens Madame Xondros, I am in the market for a more powerful magic weapon…One that befits my fighting style but packs a bit of extra punch. I have run across some deadly foes recently who can summon creatures resistant to non-magical blades, though identifying the creatures afterwards was difficult as they melted into goo,” begins Gerrard, hoping his oblique reference to the Iuz Mage’s minions might cause her to tip her hand a bit for one of the more insightful members of the party.

Her tight smile is clearly ingenuine. He senses distaste, and anger, and a sense of superiority and smugness, as well as an underlying nervousness and edge. Both Xondros and Kosrus seem flushed, as though their recent "meeting" was particularly emotional and intense. Only the third tiefling seems relaxed, and rather emotionless. You see Xondros' eye twitch a bit at Gerrard's mention of foes who "summon creatures".
Xondros listens and nods, then steps into her back room before returning with a stoppered tube. "I'm afraid I don't have any magical weapons at the moment, but I do have this." With black leather gloves, she holds it up to the light of a hanging oil lamp, squints at it for a moment, and then unstoppers it. She drinks it in a single gulp, and then looks at you for your response with a thin smile.
