Kei
Suspicion sets in about the unmoving spider (#4). Kei moves to just behind Gerrard and speaks a guttural word at spider #4.
3 psychic damage and subtract 1d4 from next save on INT 15 fail.
As he waits for the telltale sign that his quarries mind had been struck he raises one hand from the ground up to the sky with outstretched fingers pointing upwards, as if asking the ground itself to follow his hand motion. Instead shadows from the area surrounding the spider seem to drain and siphon into a pool. From the shadowy pool springs a 10ft tentacle of darkness. It lashes out at the spider.
Peri lays into the spider (#5) menacing Lankus, hitting it with a trio of well-aimed blows. It is badly wounded, but still aggressively advancing
Stepping over the body of the first spider (#1), Gerrard only manages to get one blade into the second (#2). It is badly wounded. Boko-Scorpion steps in and kills it outright (no flurry of blows/kei point needed.) Spider #2 is dead.
The spider in the rear (#4) shivers at Kei's arcane word. DC 15 INT Save:-3 A spectral tentacle materializes nearby, striking it silently with an icy touch. It tries to grapple with the ghostly tentacle, but finds its efforts pass right through it.
Qivys circles around on the back of his steed to strike spider #5. He hits the arcanely-slowed monstrosity with both swings, killing it. Spider #5 is dead.
The guy in the tree again tries to break his restraints. DC12 STR check: 9
Lankus gallops ahead, taking a shot at the remaining spider with his heavy crossbow: Lankus vs. Spider #4: Attack: 7. Hit: 7 piercing damage
The sole surviving spider retreats north into the deeper woods.

Kei
Kei rushes after the fleeing spider. "No you don't!" When he closes within 60ft of the arachnid he waves his hand in a back and forth motion while humming a dull monotonous note. The air around the spider shimmers as arcane forces disrupt the weave around it. He commands his tentacle to follow the spider also and get as close as it can.
Toll the Dead for 13 dmg with WIS13 save at disadvantage due to Mind Sliver.

Dropping his weapons tip-first in the snow, Gerrard draws his bow and maneuvers for a clear shot at the fleeing arachnid. Firing a pair of arrows, he then moves back to his melee weapons to be prepared for whatever comes next.

Qivys, watching the rest of the party attack the last fleeing spider, he moves up to the trapped man. Looking up he says: "An' who might you be?" he asks.
With the last spider high-tailing it for the woods, Peri studies the webbed figure struggling in the treetop. He asks Gerrard, "Okay, you've done your noble duty; can we go now? He'll get himself down eventually, no worse than he was before we got here. And I don't trust him -- why didn't that last spider just eat him? What's he doin' out here to begin with? And why climb a tree to get away from spiders? As well turn off the lights to hide from a ghost. No, I don't like it, and we've got plenty of trouble so's we don't need to go lookin' for more."
((And now he will use that Insight check to see if he can tell if the man looks off.))
"I am Carl! Cut me down!" calls the man stuck in the tree.
Peri notes that this man looks definitely off. He has a crazed look in his eyes, and his personal hygiene is clearly lacking. He wears a filthy traveler's cape, a stack of three filthy colored will caps on his head, and two different style boots.
”I suppose it would be too much to hope he is from the group who left last night to try and track the vampire. He may, however, have some useful information about the area and be obliged to tell us since we have saved his life…or it may be a trap. In any case, let us see what we can find out, then move on as you suggest, Master Fenwader,” responds Gerrard as he stows his bow and retrieves his blades.
Sheathing them, he moves over to the rescued man apparently named Carl, listening to his conversation with Qivys as he approaches.

Kei
The spider succumbs to their onslaught. Kei turns to see Qivys questioning the man in the tree. He commands his tentacle to stand(?) behind the dwarf. Its shadowy form drains into its self as it shrinks before slithering its way towards Qivys. Once there its huge 10ft form reappears towering over the dwarf, standing more than half the height of the captives tree. It sways back and forth waiting for another command.
"Well that was easy enough. This Dreadwood isn't as scary as the name would suggest" Kei scoffs as he joins the others. "So, Carl, I would answer the squat ones questions truthfully or my friend here will be forced to take the truth from your corpse". Kei speaks in a flat tone attempting to instil a sense of fear into Carl.
With a mighty rip, Carl tears through the webbing and falls heavily out of the tree and onto his shoulder. "Ah!" he shouts. "Go go go!" He stands and begins to run westward in a panic.
As soon as Gerrard expresses his intention of talking to the obviously deranged man, Peri shrugs and gathers up the loose horses. ((His, Kei's, and Boko's; Gerrard's is presumably still restrained?)) He climbs into his saddle, holding the reins of the others, muttering about "leavin' well enough alone."
As the man tumbles from the tree and begins fleeing into the moor Peri gives a wave. "Bye Carl!"
About halfway to the trees man, Gerrard stands bemused as he frees himself and races off. “Uh, you’re welcome?” he says with little enthusiasm. Shrugging, he goes back to his horse and mounts up. “Thank you, Master Fenwader. Shall we continue?” As he looks to the east to continue their journey.

Shaking his head as the rescued man disappears to the west Kei returns to his horse. "Thanks" he says shortly to Peri as he takes the reins. "So, shall we keep on? There's a party to get to." He mounts his mount and kicks it sharply in the ribs. It neighs in protest but takes off obediently.
