Daylight is, in fact, burnt. It is black and bitter cold outside the Council offices.
Unless you have further formal business with the Council or the assembled crowd or dignitaries, the Council adjourns. Cakes and ales are brought out, as the traditional social hour begins.
Do you remain for the refreshments? Do you have any other business tonight? Is everyone headed to the inn for the night, or will some of you brave the cabins?
"Finally" he sighs "can we move our conversation out of the stifling building and all its pompous inhabitants? " He heads to the doors and outside. Once there he would engage Qivys if the dwarf was to exit the building at the same time. "You look familiar. Have you ever been to The Styes?" He looks the dwarf up and down. Obviously battle hardened there's something he can't quite put his finger on. Definitely familiar.
((Kei is happy to follow anyone to the Goat for drinks & accommodation))
“Is there more we wish to know, or materiel we wish to request?”
Peri mutters quietly, "There's lots I'd like to have, but nothin' we're gonna get here." Then out loud, to the assembled grandees and gawkers, "Aye, we'll do this 'duty' you've laid on us. I want the sea-devils dead and gone same as any sailor that plies these waters. Hopefully we'll be able to help. And if not..." He doffs his glorious new hat with a wide smile and gives a ridiculously deep bow, full of elaborate flourishes, and stands straight. "Well, you poobahs won't be out anything but a few chancers, and who'll miss 'em, eh?" And with that last shot he claps his hat back on his head, spins on his heel, and marches out at his full 3'1".
"I been a soldier all my life an' never have I seen such a mess." he mutters to the party.
Peri laughs at the dwarf's assessment of the "War Council." "It's my first Council of War. Good to know they aren't all so shambolic. We've got some catchin' up to do, and maybe some plannin'? Though what we can plan for, not knowin' more than what we've been given... Maybe you military-minded folks'll see better than I do. But it'll all go better with Lankus's ale -- Cyrollalee bless that man as the only redeemin' part of this whole town! -- and this might be our last chance to taste it."
((Peri is ready to take the discussion to the Wicker Goat.))
"I'll catch up with you guys after a while--there are a few folk I wish to speak with," says Gerrard to his friends as they head towards the Goat, then he moves off to speak with his cousin.
Gerrard speaks with his Elwood, trying to learn what is going on in Seaton, how his parents are taking his recent absence, and how the state of the alliance is going. He speaks to the councilors as well, even mentioning to Owland that if he survives the upcoming scouting mission and following battle, he might like to refurbish the nearby smuggler's manor and take up residence there. He also obliquely apologizes to Farbern for his sometimes rough and sarcastic companions, but insists that beyond their bluster they are loyal citizens and will do what is best for Saltmarsh, Seaton, and the whole of Keoland.
Gerrard approaches Garurt and Vyth and commends them for their service, asking to be remembered to Queen Othokent. He also speaks to the merfolk lady, expressing admiration of her beautiful coral rapier. If her people have similar pieces to trade, he would be ecstatic to purchase one before the morning tide and bear it into the upcoming battle.
Before he takes his leave to go off to hang with the gang at the Goat, he moves to say goodbye to Elwood and asks him a favor, "Tell Esmerelda that I go to prepare the way for the assault against the Sahuagin. Give her this locket as a way to remember me if I fall."
With an unreadable look, he nods and heads out the door to find his friends sitting around their favorite table at the Goat. More cold drink and hot food, but an early bedtime in his room at the Goat for Gerrard follows; there is much to be done tomorrow.
Boko nonchalantly grabs some cake on the way out the door, and then heads to the Goat to eat and drink and plan. She toys with a piece of fabric, trying to find out what it is and does. She'll hand out personal information in dribs and drabs to Qivys, asking him what his story is and what he can do. She retires early, happy to have a warm room.
"Not sure drinkin' tha night away will be in order there Peri." Qivys says. "We got some plannin' still, out of ear shot of them that are sendin' us. We may have signed on ta help 'em but I don't trust 'em one bit. They ain't provided one of their own ta go on this, nor them lizards an' only 1 sea elf. Ta me that says they don't expect us ta survive this an' we're a distraction. I'm bettin' we are tha bait ta misdirect 'em while they move their "army" inta position fer attack. Never trust a commander as far as ya can throw him I always say."
To Boko's inquires he says. "Not much ta tell. I'm a dwarf and a soldier." he says. "Been doing that most my life. Made tha rank of Sergeant of Axes but there was some politics involved an' I left. Signed on with this crew, well Peri atleast, and been in this town since. Had a sickness come over me and had me down a bit till I was found by some dwarves, last of the kin and orphans of them that was on the Winter. They got a hold of Dwal an' he come and did some healin', before ya went off on what ever ya were doing. Anyhow, I got better. A couple of days ago some word came from tha north fer Dwal an' I promised ta get it to him. I did an' he left, chargin' me with a task an' gave me this helmet 'fore he did."
Gerrard catches up with his stiff and stuffy cousin Elwood, whom he doesn't know terribly well. Elwood is tidy, formal, polite, and humorless, with an air of superiority toward everyone in the room except Gerrard, whom he treats as an equal. Whether truthful or not, he denies knowing anything about the personal family squabbles of the Feldrens. He just wants to boast about the capabilities of "his" navy. He accepts the locket politely and delicately; he handles it very gingerly, as though you handed him something rather embarassing.
Owland initially shows only mild interest in Gerrard's renovation ideas. It seems clear that this is not Saltmarsh business, although then she seems to start processing the possible opportunities of having that house occupied by allies.
Farbern seems unfazed by any earlier rudeness. He is focused on the upcoming assault and seems nothing but friendly and supportive of Gerrard and his party.
The lizardfolk are alien but polite, and seem to respond positively to Gerrard's remarks. The merfolk smiles, nods blankly, and eyes the doorway.
Boko spends time with her new cloth, and learns its properties. (Added to Boko's inventory.)
The Goat is bustling - it's hard to find a seat in this place. Lankus and his assistant are flat-out busy, serving roasted chickens, potatoes, biscuits, and ale. It is a noisy crowd - the usual mix of dwarven miners and mining staff, drunken guards, traders, and travelers.
As he steps into the Goat, Peri inhales deeply and smiles. Hearty food, spilled ale, and dirty men. No halfling house, but it's a smell he's come to love, or at least feel at home in. "Well Qiv, in that case it seems like the perfect time to drink the night away. Good odds this'll be our last night ashore before bein' consigned to the deeps, and no sense facin' that doom sober."He finds them atable and tries to flag down someone to order a real meal and his first pint. As he waits he pulls out a sheet of paper and begins writing, half-listening to whatever planning the others engage in.
Gerrard comes in about an hour after the others arrive to find them well into eating and drinking. Ordering some food and drink of his own, he asks Oceanus and Qivys what they have been up to since he last saw them.
Getting much the same information as Boko did from Qivys, he says, “Glad to have you back, Sergeant Qivys. I only briefly worked with you before, but I am please Brother Fiercehammer was able to restore you. I had hoped he would be here with us now, but I wish him well in his business to the north.”
Listening to Oceanus, Gerrard shows admiration of his efforts to bring his people into the military effort to aid the Lizardfolk and defeat the sea devils.
Soon enough the conversation turns to detailed plans for their approach to the Sahuagin lair. Looking around the crowded common room, Gerrard suggests they retire to a more private location, just in case there are sea devil spies about…

Through Kei, Oceanus explains that he has spent the time since you last saw him rallying the forces of his undersea home of Manaan, about twenty miles southeast of Saltmarsh. The aquatic elves, he reminds you, are mortal enemies of the Sahuagin. Wars between the two races have raged for centuries across the coasts and seas of the world. His people have been waiting a very long time for this opportunity to cooperatively end this bloody conflict, and extinguish once and for all the sea devils plaguing this coast.

Ordering the spiced mead and a plate of chicken he sits down and listens to his colleagues chat amongst themselves. He quietly eats and surveys the room, intent on catching any eavesdroppers.

Qivys nudges Peri, before the halfling gets too drunk. "You know any of these lads here?" he asks,. "Ones that might know somethin' about the route we'd be taken or near it? I want ta get some idea what we're sailin' inta an' if there is any local lore or tales about the waters around it."
Peri finishes writing and downs his tankard. "Be right back. Gotta take care of somethin'." He darts upstairs, only a tad wobbly, to his room.
If anyone is watching carefully they might notice Peri return to the common room a few minutes later, carrying the chest that held the hardtack. He gets Lankus's attention and speaks to him for a couple of minutes, then hands the chest over. He wipes his eyes and takes a deep breath, then he grabs two more pints.
Peri returns to the table, a flagon in each hand. "Hope I didn't miss out on any important strategery. But I think we should have at least one toast to this insane undertakin'." He climbs up onto the table and raises one cup, then calls out in loud, clear dwarvish, "Im himmel gibs't kein bier, drum trinken wir es hier!" and slams down the first ale. Then he drops back down on the bench with a huge smile. "So, anyone figure out a way of doin' this without all of us dyin'?" He takes a sip of the other ale.
((The only Dwarvish Peri knows, other than a few ripe curses, is "In heaven there's no beer, so we drink it while we're here!" It might not even be a real Dwarvish saying, but it's a common toast along various waterfronts.))
Peri looks around the bar, hoping to spot a likely source. "Your best bet for local knowledge of someplace that out of the way would be the local smugglers. Probably those fellows at The Empty Net. But we're not high on their list of favorites right now..." Insight: 13
"You might ask that one; he's got the look of someone who's accidentally missed the customs house before."
"I didn't ask ya ta spot someone in tha crowd." Qivys says. "I asked ya if ya knew anyone around us that might be of some help on gettin' a little more information on where were headed." Qivys pauses. "Maybe ya had too much ta drink already." he says as he looks around the room.
Qivys stands. "Alright" he says. "I'm gonna go to my room and get some sleep. Big Day tomorrow. Lots ta do." he says with a grin. With that Qivys will leave the party and get a room for the night, if he doesn't have his old room. He'll go upstairs, leaving the party to sort out what they want to do next, drink or, what ever. After a few moments the party will faintly hear : "DAMN BIRD!" come from upstairs then all goes silent for the night.
Peris exuberant toast snaps Kei into the moment. He stands his dropped tankard and wipes the dregs of his mead from the table. If it was anyone but the halfling he'd probably have a few terse words for them, but his pint sized friend had a way of disarming situations that Kei appreciated.
Talk of the Empty Net gave Kei an idea. He grabs Peri by the collar and pulls the less than sober halfling to him. He whispers in his ear. "I'll be back with some information for our new Dwal." After a moments silence he adds "There's something about him. Something familiar. Don't know if good or bad. Keep an eye on him." With that he scoots his chair back and leaves the table after offering a flourish of hands to the collected adventurers. He disappears out into the night.
