Minutes tick by as the sphinx begins asking simple questions of Simeon's morality and views on the current shaping of the world. When Abraxas joins in, the debate grows more complex as the sphinx begins posing scenarios that conflict with Simeon's original points. As the hours pass, it becomes clear that this monstrosity, despite saying that he knows little of the current state of the outside world, is an expert in philosophical debate.
Finally, the sphinx nods and concludes the conversation. "Thank you for engaging in such wonderful conversation with me, wanderers. I do so enjoy the rare occasions when I have such an opportunity, and I much prefer it to rending you limb from limb," the creature says, sitting back on its haunches. "However, it is clear that you do not possess the necessary wisdom to advance any further. I bid you good day, and should you wish to return someday in the far future, I would welcome the opportunity to test your wisdom once more."
Simeon ponders what he has heard, what he has learned, and what he has failed to understand from the hours-long discourse with the sphinx. Nodding his head in gratitude toward the creature, Simeon says, "Much have you taught us this day, and for that we are thankful. We have tested your wisdom and, unfortunately, failed. So, now we must test your courtesy and grace. Please allow us to pass; we cannot turn back."
Garu looks up and bats her eyes persuasively. "With the wisdom AND strength that you clearly possess, you surely have the heart to see fit to allow us to further our journey." Garu smiles up at the sphinx trying to capture his gaze. "We have never gotten the chance to encounter anyone as clearly transcendent as you - it would be a shame if we were not given the chance to share with the world what a stunning being you are."

Garu smiles up at the sphinx trying to capture his gaze. The sphinx stares ahead, motionless. As flattery is made and persuasion is attempted, it slowly turns its head to stare, unflinching, at Garu. Its nostrils flare, and it turns to Simeon.
Harmony had watched and waited as Simeon and Abraxas talked with the sphinx but apparently it wasn't enough as the sphinx wouldn't let them pass. Everyone pleaded, but the sphinx still told them to leave. "Come on, pretty please! Won't you let us pass just this once? We really really need to pass through here. Is there any other way that we can convince you to let us pass?" she then begged and pleaded to the sphinx with cutesy puppy-dog eyes. But she saw Simeon, thinking if it came down to it and everyone else wanted to do so, she was willing to fight to get past the sphinx.

Flying upward twenty feet with two powerful strokes of its wings, the sphinx roars again, "Leave!"
A powerful wave of fear exudes outward through the entirety of the room, and Harmony, Garu, and Mro Jus Bur immediately feel the compulsion to oblige as terror overcomes their senses.
OOC: Harmony, Garu, and Mro Jus Bur are frightened of the sphinx, and must use their action this turn to dash away from the sphinx by the safest route.
Abraxas can take his readied lightning bolt in round 1, or decide on a different action.
"It seems the die has been cast," remarks Simeon. A moment later the room is filled with a flash of light as the cleric sends a guiding bolt at the sphinx.
(Ranged spell attack: 26 | 16 radiant damage)
Simeon then backs away from the sphinx, trying to create as much distance as possible between the sphinx and himself while remaining in the room.
(I believe that attack hits; therefore, the next attack roll against the sphinx is done with advantage)

Guided by the dim light around it, Abraxas casts Ice Knife as a second level spell: 25, doing 3 piercing and 7 cold damage if the sphinx fails a DC 15 DEX save.
As his bonus action, Abraxas will Misty Step as far away from the sphinx as possible while staying in the room.
OOC: Abraxas would not be able to use misty step and ice knife in the same turn (if you use a spell as a bonus action, the only other spell you can cast in the same turn is a cantrip), but the room is small enough that he can use his movement to get to the edge of the room.

Simeon strikes first, standing strong and sending his guiding bolt streaking past Garu, Harmony, and Mro Jus Bur as they flee in terror. The bolt of light slams into the sphinx's flank, illuminating it starkly as a target for Abraxas's shard of ice. The ice explodes, but does not harm the monstrosity any further as it flies downward toward the mage, accepting the darts of force that spring forth fromthe flute of Mro Jus Bir in the process.
"How dare you!" the sphinx shouts before its teeth close down on Abraxas's arm. The creature wrenches him forward as it swipes a meaty claw toward his head, but Abraxas pulls his arm free and slides beneath the strike.
Once out of view of the great beast, Garu, Harmony and Mro Jus Bur collectively come to their senses, overcoming the unnatural fear.
Placement: The sphinx is engaged in melee combat with Abraxas. Garu, Harmony, and Mro Jus Bur are 45 feet away from the sphinx and out of view, in the previous room.
Health: The sphinx is lightly wounded.

Harmony came over the fear, realizing what had happened and not too happy. She would move toward the next room, stopping once she can see the sphinx and the rest of her friends. "We asked you nicely to let us pass, you big meanie!!" she calls out, casting Vicious Mockery at the sphinx. Then Harmony will look to Abraxas as she casts Healing Word on him.
Movement: Move to next room until she can see the sphinx, Simeon, Abraxas, Bir
Action: Vicious Mockery on the Sphinx, 15 WIS Save or take 4 psychic damage and have disadvantage on next attack roll

Simeon lands another bolt into the sphinx's flank as it reels from the effect of Harmony's polite mockery. Abraxas fades into mist and looses another ray of frost that strikes the creature near its tail before reappearing in the distance, and Mro Jus Bir unleashes another torrent of magical darts into the beast as well. Mro Jus Bur dashes back into the center of the room, waiting for a moment to strike, and the sphinx growls as Garu creates a cylindrical beam of light that sears into its fur.
The sphinx takes to the air, away from the moonbeam, and roars, unleashing another wave of magic that pours over Simeon and Harmony. This time, they both feel a sudden wave of nausea overcome them; their vision of the room swirls and their thoughts grow cloudy. Each of them forget where they are for a moment.
OOC: Neither Simeon nor Harmony can move or take an Action this turn. They can each repeat the Wisdom saving throw at the end of their turn.

Simeon turns and studies the faces of his companions, wondering if they, like him, are willing to fight their way past the sphinx...
