To Kes: Con steps closer to the boy, getting up into his face. You fetched the poison. You're part of this conspiracy. You're killing Graddik, as sure as if you stuck a dagger through his heart. How you feeling about that, kid?
"No shit Con. I never said I wasn't part of it, and I'd gladly do it again under the same circumstances. He ****ed up when he kidnapped Rachael. All I'm saying is that he was relatively civil to us, maybe we need to discuss the issue further. "
Mendax gets up as Con gets in Kes's face and gets between the two men. "Gentleman, please. Let's focus on the task at hand. We need to find Howell and soon. Bickering between us will get us nowhere." He then walks over to the window and casual looks out of it and then looks back at the party and gives them a weak smile. "Let's find Howell and maybe if he's lucky by the time we get him to Graddik, Graddik will be dead."
"But, you all are right, I suppose we let Graddik die."
"Why do we need to find Howell? Let him rot in whatever hovel he is holed up in."
Con looks at Kes, and then nods. That's right, we let him die. And no more of this 'feeling bad' bullshit. We put Graddik down like a dog and then we move on and never give him a second thought. That's how it works.
He looks at Mendax. Your call, but Kes is right. Howell's nothing to us. Let him rot. I'll be out in the yard if you need me. He heads out somewhere he can get some exercise and training done, before the whole day is wasted.
Rachael watches the party argue and clutches her tea a little closer. Poison? Kes, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean for you to get mixed up in this. I never did, I swear. Her hands begin to shake a bit and she sets the tea down. Howell, Howell’s probably long gone by know, halfway to Ten-Towns maybe, he always talked about finding his fortune there. I doubt we’ll see him again. After a moment she settles down and picks up her tea again. The morning passes into afternoon without incident and after a while Rachael gets up I should be going, people must be wondering about me. I owe you all a great deal, you can count on me to keep silent about what I heard here today and if there’s anything I can help with, Kes knows where to find me at the Academy. Thank you all, thank you. With that Rachael takes her leave.
Con runs through his drills in the yard, sweat forming pouring off him despite the chill in the air. Afternoon passes into evening and then night. You are all gathered in the common room doing one thing or another when the door bursts open. A man clutching his forehead with blood streaming down his face stumbles in to the room. Those bastards just about did me in! Mendax? Is Mendax here?
Mendax finishes writing a letter, then folds it and then seals it with wax using the symbol of the Temple. As he waves it in the air for it to dry faster the door bursts open and a man clutching his forehead stumbles in with blood streaming down his face. Mendax pockets the letter and quickly rushes to the man to grab him before he falls. "Vinn, help me with the man!" Mendax says. He then looks at the man and says, "tell me what happened. Who did this?"
Vin will hop to, rushing to the mans side and taking him by the arm to lead him to the cot where Mendax works. She'll then quickly fill the kettle and start it boiling for clean water and retrieve any bandages and appliances she thinks the Doctor may need.
The man straightens up takes the blood soaked rag from his forehead and as he does you realize there is no wound. (This npc is played by Sam Rockwell, which is quite a get for us!) He smiles a crooked smile and says Much obliged! Sorry for the pretense, everyone. You can call me Malachi, I’m here on behalf of one Nine-fingers Keene. She has requested the pleasure of your company with all due haste. You see our mutual associate Graddik has taken quite ill, expert opinion is that he won’t make it through the night. He takes a swipe at his forehead with the rag, wiping most of the “blood” away and tosses it into a wastebasket. Now, are we ready to go?
Vin moves to turn off the kettle, and then just scowls at the newcomer and crosses her arms. "You are in a holy house, sir; a place of healing. There's no room for charlatans and their theatrics here," she reprimands the man.
Vin continues scowling at him for a moment more, annoyed by his antics, but then relents and addresses the group. "Well, this is unexpected. What should we do?"
Anyone can roll history at advantage for knowledge of Nine-Fingers Keene.
Malachi smiles and sketches a bow to Vin Sorry, ma’am, I didn’t mean to offend your sensibilities, delicate as they are, but there’s eyes out there on the streets and an ounce of subterfuge can be worth a pound of slit throats if you know what I mean. He takes a fresh bandage out of his pocket and winds it around his brow. When he’s finished he snaps his fingers and a small red stain appears on the bandage where his wound would be. Who is Nine-Fingers? She’s my boss. A business woman you could say.
Mendax lets go of the man called Malachi and steps aside. "You say Graddik has fallen ill? What signs of illness is he showing?" Mendax asks Malachi, trying to make his voice seemed concerned.
You all know that Nine-Fingers Keene is the leader of the thieves guild, for all intents and purposes Graddik’s boss. She has a reputation as a level-headed leader who always pays attention to the bottom line. But she is completely coldblooded when need be.
Malachi smiles graciously at Vin and nods gravely to Mendax. Yes indeed, it has the healers quite perplexed. It’s a shame really. Malachi gives Mendax a surreptitious wink. Now, shall we be off? That shitheel Lors will likely be here soon and it would be best if we were gone by then.
Mendax hesitates at Malachi's words, but hearing about Graddick close demise and the threat of Lors he heeds Malachi's warning and prepares to follow him. He looks over at Vin and says, "perhaps our time at this temple is cut short sooner then we have would have liked." Mendax sighs and looks at all his belongings that made this place feel like home, but after a moment he sighs again and shrugs to no one but really himself and says "all is well as long as Lathander watches over us." He then quickly grabs his warhammer and straps it to his side and packs his backpack with his clerical gear, a flask of holy water, sleeping bag, and a few days rations and then grabs his crossbow and heads to the door. He waits for Vin to leave and then gives the room a quick once over and mutters something about this not being the first time he had to rush and go from this place and this hopefully won't be the last and then meets Malachi and the crew outside.

((Does Mendax know the man))

Con continues doing what he was doing before, sends a scowl in the direction of the aspiring 'actor', looks to Mendax and then Vin, and says nothing.
Vin moves to turn off the kettle, and then just scowls at the newcomer and crosses her arms. "You are in a holy house, sir; a place of healing. There's no room for charlatans and their theatrics here," she reprimands the man.

Sorry, Mendax, you don’t recognize the man.

Vin just folds her arms in front of her and narrows her eyes at the man in distaste.

"Maybe I've heard of her before, hmm..." Kestrell trails off as he thinks.

Kestrell grabs his pack and his horn, and gets ready to follow Malachi.
Malachi smiles at Kes. That’s the spirit!
Con stands slowly, as if not surprised by this turn of events, grabs his kit and follows Kes out.
Mendax hesitates at Malachi's words, but hearing about Graddick close demise and the threat of Lors he heeds Malachi's warning and prepares to follow him. Kestrell looks back at Mendax, Vin and Con: "Let's go!"
