as far as I know, Thistle is downstairs with Nynoa and Grubet. The others are still up in the room (I know Lem posted about helping Thistle if she needed it, but she said she wanted to keep trying on her own, so I interpretted that as everyone else still being upstairs.)
We've exhausted our rolls in the room, right? And all the guests are downstairs? We don't know anything about the suspicious human yet, so it would be metagaming to search that room now.
Zashier is, for a while at least, seems distracted with sniffing at the air in between pauses for thought. Deciding mutely to keep the scent in mind, he listens to Yokini and Lem's report, but would ask softly, "If'n you don't study that, or happen to be done with it, might I hold on to that sliver of paper."He requests. And if allowed to, he gives it a good wiff, nods to himself, and then with a sigh puts it away.
Either which way, Zashier heads down at least after Lem, and if there's a tense air with thistle and co., just looks around warily for the first few moments.

The group rejoins Thistle downstairs just as Grubet is finishing up his explanation.
Through the windows you can see few people outside. There is still a guard or two posted to make sure no one enters, but the crowd has dispersed. Nynoa got distracted by Thistle and Grubet, and was unable to make it outside to see if any guests were still around for you to chat with.
"Not gonna lie, had been hoping to speak with a certain smith and maybe confirm a few things. But, if you insist-..."Zashier trails off there, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck, and then looking to the others. Whatever their decision, he would follow-up on, though with lingering wondering about his own helpfulness.

Grubet leads you back upstairs, around the corner from Romero's room. He works the lock, opens the door, and inside you see the same things that were in Romero's room - a bed and writing desk.
Thistle, with your heightened awareness you can tell the bed looks like it hasnt been touched, though the desk looks like it has been sat at. Grubet can confirm, when he cleaned the room, the bed is made the exact way he made it, and the chair has been left out, which he would never have done, since he always tucks it under the desk when he is cleaning a room.
"A man came in after Romero, and declined to sign his name. Grubet here gave a description, but it's pretty bland. This is his room, and it is clear he used the desk, but did not stay the night."
She turns to Grubet, "Refresh my memory, did you see him leave?"
"Lem, Yokini, Zashier, is there anything you can tell from the room besides the obvious?"

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.

Lem sets to work again without a word. Investigation: 18
He's distracted by his goggles, which keep falling over his eyes (they normally sit up on his forehead, uselessly). He asks Yokini's help to fasten them again so he can focus more on the room.
"A few things based on the clues, but-..."Zashier looks to Grubet and Nynoa(assume she toow as present), then back to Thistle. "Not much that -- oh wait a second! Just had a thought, which in itself is not unusual, unless you count the time I daydreamed I was a chicken. A positively nightmarish scenario that was, what with Bitts nearly having gotten a hold of me."He chuckled heartily for all of a few seconds, before seeming to come back to his senses.
"Say Mr. Grubet, if that's your real name, which I assume it is. Did you see Romero bring in something when he checked in? Or the Mystery character of yours, not to imply that they don't exist of course. And if so, what did it look like exactly."

Romero says he did not see the stranger leave. Zashier, Grubet says he didnt see Romero bring anything in with him, same with the stranger.
Lem, because you found the hidden compartment in the other desk, you have advantage on investigating this desk 18
On a hunch you try this desk to see if it has the same hidden compartment, which it does. This one is not empty, though. In it, you find an unfinished, unsigned letter...to an unknown person named Melira...

Lem knows paper rather well, having worked with many different kinds all his life. Can he tell what kind of paper was used here, what kind of ink, anything distinguishing? If it's just paper the (literally a week old) inn has for guest use, that's one thing. If it's something more unique he'll try to figure out if there's anything interesting there -- watermarks, a certain style, a certain make, scribbles, drafts on the other side, etc.
Thistle, Grubet says "The stranger came in the afternoon, as the celebration was starting. Romero checked in later last night after the party"
Also, no one in the room with you has heard of Melira before.
Lem, you hold the paper, feeling it, looking at it from different angles. Sniffing it. You get a whiff of several different alchemical smells. You probably call Yokini over, and she also gives a whiff. They are subtle enough that she doesnt know what they are, but the smell is familiar to her...sort of what her lab smells like after she has been experimenting...And there is another smell. You call Zashier over, and he confirms it. You know it doesnt smell human. Well, it sort of does, but it also doesnt. There is a whiff of something orc-ish, which is odd since Grubet said a human checked in. Those of you who fought in the war remember the smell of burning orc flesh, of a field full of the orc dead, and also the whiff of orc in the woods as you tracked them. This is a smell you likely tried to forget after the war. it is not strong, it is faint, and mixed with others , but (with a roll like that) you notice it.
The paper itself is old and wrinkly, obviously not kept in a book or sheaf, but is probably kept loose in a pocket of sorts, possibly with some sort of chemical substance, which led to the smell. The writing is crude, a simple marking implement.

Just in case, I'll roll an investigation as well in case Lem's advantage roll only applied to the desk: 21
Yokini helps Lem with his goggles and then looks around as the dwarf is checking out the desk. When he finds the letter, she joins him and sniffs the paper when asked to add her nose to the mix. "Smells familiar, but I can't place it," she says. But when Zashier mentions orc, she sniffs again, looking startled and a bit angry. "Orc?" She looks back at Grubet. "You said it was a human? Are you sure? Were you really paying attention? He didn't have green skin or tusks?"
"Magic... is not so unknown to them, as one might believe. I'm in part in living proof of that, in a twisted sort of way, towards the end the war." Zashier affirms, giving a small, sad smile. "And after the stomping we gave them last, seems they've gotten more clever about it all... Though not enough to disguise it all, or so it seems."

Yeah happy to head back downstairs after our search turns up the receipt.

Thistle blanches as she reads this. “This isn’t just a murder we’re trying to solve. We’re trying to stop them before they hurt more people!”
Turning to everyone else in the room, she asks, “Does anyone recognize the name Melira?”
