Zashier, your nose perks up as you enter the room. (Perception with trunk: 10). It lets you know that you smell kobold. which is fairly obvious from the kobold sitting in the middle of the room.
If Lem sees the kobold, he'll ready a fire bolt to shoot off if he begins to cast anything. Can he tell upon first glance if the kobold appears to be a spellcaster? Carrying any components? Does the staff seem mundane?
(@All: This top portion is more for flavor than legitimately seeking success.)
Zashier just slowly nods as if he understood the command. Whether he surprised Thistle or not, his next action is to first sniff at the air again in the room, confirming at least no hidden celestial, fiend, or undead being within 60ft of him. After which, he brings the bucket "ooze" up to eye level, silently prays for it, and then.... tries to throw it in such a way that it stays inside up until the last moment, spilling all over grandpa kobold!
Assuming of course he can get into/wasn't already in a decent throwing range for it!
wow. Just wow. A couple of things are going to happen....
Lets say that is a ranged attack, but its a bucket. Normally a ranged attack would be dex, but its not a crossbow or something like that, so I will be a benevolent DM and let you use your strength modifier, but no proficiency (unless you can somehow prove to me you are proficient at throwing buckets....).
Z-Man ranged attack at the sitting kobold: 6
Advantage roll, for being stealthy. 16
Zashier steps up after Thistle moves to the side, and hurls the bucket of ooze at the sitting kobold. As it flies through the air, you can all see the ooze sloshing but stays in the bucket. Everything happens in slow motion as the bucket flies further away, and it becomes clear fairly quickly that the bucket is just barely going to hit the kobold.
As the bucket falls onto the sitting kobold, it hits him in the chest, splattering the kobold with ooze, and falls to the ground... well, you expected it to hit the ground, but the very moment when it should hit the ground, the "ground" gives way, and you realize that it was not ground at all.
In slow motion, the bucket falls, hits what you thought was the ground but was actually an extremely well-concealed burlap-ish tarpaulin stretched out over what used to be the floor of the room, from corner to corner. The bucket falls, taking the tarp-covering with it into a 10 foot deep hole that takes up almost the entirety of the room.
The sitting kobold is now suspended over this tarp, attempting to hold tight to his staff that seems to be floating in mid-air (Dex save 13) but is unable to keep his grip. He falls to the ground at the bottom of the pit. The damage of the ooze and the damage from the fall have proven too much for the kobold. He does not get up....(and there is a black metal staff floating in midair)...
...However, he must have been bait, for as this happens, 10 kobolds run in through the opposite doorway and fan out, their slings at the ready.
For fun, lets try out this idea of Concurrent initiative. Everyone in the party, please post what your character would do in the next 6 second....
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Lem, looking around Yokini and through Zashier's legs again, sees bits of what happened, and mostly sees the line of slingbolds file in. He pushes past the others and ducks to the right corner along the wall, and raises his mechanical arm. He almost changes his hand configuration to begin to spray a large cloud of fog at the kobolds but at the last second goes back to a familiar gesture that causes a jet of mist to launch toward the middle of the line of kobolds, just behind them, and a 20 foot sphere of that same mist you saw at the door to the manor and also to with the tieflings at the bar appears around them.
Lem casts sleep at second level, causing 25 hp worth of kobold to go night-night.
Zashier just stares bug-eyed for the first second or two, having not at ALL expected so extreme a trap. But, despite the rapid fire of often conflicting thoughts and feelings taht flit through the elephantine skull, once the kobolds come charging out, the man is practically racing around the right side of the hole with only thoughts of protection in mind. Leaping the last ten or so, he comes down hard on any still conscious kobolds in reach with his axe, showing no mercy this time around.
After three instances of aggression -- somewhat justified though they were -- Zashier could not offer a forth.
Action:Attack. [Lethal, One-Handed]Battleaxe - Attack: 17 Damage: 8 of slashing at nearest conscious kobold.

Thistle will rush left, saber out and buckler at the ready, to engage the first kobolds on that side, hoping to ward off their sling stones as she goes!

Yokini squirms her way to a clear spot and cocks her crossbow, causing another glowing bolt to appear. "Where is my mother?!" she yells, firing at one of the kobolds.
As the kobolds burst into the room, the party splits in multiple directions.
Seeing several people split off is enough to confuse the kobolds; they aren’t sure who to sling rocks at first. Seeing Zashier racing towards them is enough to make most of them try and hit Zashier. As they raise their slings to fire, Lem raises his hand and a translucent mist quickly moves through the air, engulfing 5 of the kobolds, who fall to the ground (the 5 middle ones - lasts a minute….the clock is ticking….). Only 5 kobolds are left standing, 3 of whom are close to Zashier and sling their rocks. The other 2 let loose their rocks at Thistle. One rock hits Zashier, and one rock hits Thistle (see damage below)
Zashier, moving with surprising speed, rushes at the kobolds. He has tried to be nice, he has tried to reason, and has tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but no more. While being pelted with rocks, he rushes the kobolds, his Battleaxe raised high in the air, and brings it down on the closest kobold, cleaving him in half.
His two kobold friends stare, their mouths agape, appalled. While they are standing there, one of the two kobolds is caught completely unaware by a magical arrow. As it enters his chest, he turns to look, and sees Yokini with her crossbow pointed at him. As he drops to the ground, bleeding out, the last thing he hears is the high pitched scream of a gnome “Where is my mother!?”.
Across the room, Thistle is ducking and dodging the rocks as she moves left, moves up to the closest kobold, but is her swing only hits air as she is unable to make the connection between her saber and the kobold’s body. Thistle, you are unable to gain insight into the kobolds tactics (no insightful fighting advantage on this kobold.)
Back at the stairs, Raddunth, pinned in as he was by the party, is unable to engage the enemy until there is room for him.

Lem raises his actual hand and opens his palm, a spark of light quickly turning into a white-hot dart of flame that shoots out toward the closest kobold to Thistle.
Zashier grimaced at the splatter of blood. Some of which having even managed to cover his trunk. 'What a cruel test this is' He thought as he raised the axe head from the fallen, and looked at the next in line. 'Yea, its cruel. But, ya gotta have'm, or else folk like these will get away with a lot worse' His will hardened further at the thought, Zashier rushes the next kobold's position, aiming to behead it one clean stroke. A quick death; the only kindness the Elephantine man could offer now.

Yokini, enraged at the kobolds, continues yelling about her family as she drops one of the kobolds next to Thistle with another of her magical arrows.
Thistle, seeing the second kobold drop, swings hard as the kobold in front of her fumbles to drop its sling and grab its dagger. He is not able to get his dagger out in time as Thistle unleashes her wrath on the kobold, and slashes at him. A bloody gash opens up on the kobolds chest as he falls to the side. He slumps over, about to fall into the pit, and suddenly catches on fire. You see a bit of smoke coming from Lem’s hand. Perhaps you nod in his direction, thanking him for the assist.
The flaming kobold falls into the pit.
Back at the stairs…
Finally with a clear path, Raddunth runs forward and makes a mighty athletic leap off the edge of the walkway, and just barely grabs hold of the floating staff with one hand. As he hangs there, he manages to get his other hand up.
Raddunth you are now able to see a bit more detail about the staff:
The staff is 2-3 feet in length, thin metal, and has a button on the side near one end.
On the eastern side of the room…
Zashier, after cleaving one kobold in half, and having Yokini drop the other, steps up to the last kobold near him. With mixed emotions, a tear in his eye but solid resolve in his heart, he separates the head of the kobold from its body,
Thistle no need for insightful fighting this time with that nat20
You are out of combat, but you still have 5 sleeping kobolds at your feet. They will wake up in roughly 45 seconds.
Raddunth, you are still hanging in mid-air above the pit.

If Lem sees the kobold, he'll ready a fire bolt to shoot off if he begins to cast anything. Can he tell upon first glance if the kobold appears to be a spellcaster? Carrying any components? Does the staff seem mundane?
The kobold is dead center in the room. 15 feet from all sides. He doesnt notice you, but also gives off the aura that he is in his own little world.
He doesnt give any indication of being a spellcaster...can you tell that just by looking at someone? is there spell-dar?
Perception for Lem: 14 You cant tell much about the staff in his lap other than the fact it is a staff, and it seems to be made of metal, not wood.
Thistle makes a hand signal—two fingers across her eyes—that nobody understands. She immediately realizes that and looks frustrated.
