"The presence of royalty is always considered a formal setting, It is a pity you have not found the time to educate yourself in our ways over your time in our country. But of course I hear you have been much too busy to bother with trifling rules of etiquette. And you understand now, at least (I hope) so there is no harm done."

I'm pretty sure that only applied to the upper classes and not the french maid or whatever, but I thought it was interesting. It was a fun read, because of some of the ridiculous rules. For example, when eating buttered bread or toast, you were supposed to cut off bite-sized pieces and butter each one individually as you ate it. Buttering the whole slab at once and biting into it was considered the rude behavior of a farm hand.))
After the meal, servants (probably students hired part-time from the Thamasaille) clear the food away and card tables are brought out. The Prince sits at a table with Amryn, Tinanel and Edlund Naica, and prepares to be taken to the cleaners.

(Quentin, are you playing? There are Naicas who would be willing to give up a seat to you on either table.)
Mindartis sits at a table with Reglan and a couple of Naicas he hasn't met yet. They introduce themselves as Searani and Dandrath Naica.
Searani shuffles the cards with expert hands as she asks, "Have you played Seven Bards before, Lord Mindartis?" (I assume you have not. XD)
"Each player is dealt seven cards. You try to collect multiples of the same card. There are ten different cards, each of which has its own value, and the deck is enchanted so that it is impossible to say how many of each card is in it: each card drawn is drawn completely at random.
10 - The Deity
9 - The Angel
8 - The Demon
7 - The Wizard
6 - The Dragon
5 - The Warrior
4 - The Ruler
3 - The Lover
2 - The Scoundrel
1 - The Bard (suit ibecomes 11, f there are seven of them)
Two of a kind is worth 2x the suit, 3 of a kind is worth 4x the suit, 4 of a kind is worth 8x the suit, 5 of a kind is worth 16x the suit, 6 of a kind is worth 32x the suit, and seven of a kind is worth 64x the suit..
So, two Deities is worth 20, four Lovers is worth 24, 6 Warriors is worth 160, and so on. The only exception is Bards. If you get seven of them, the suit becomes 11, and the hand is worth 704.
Each player puts in one gold piece at the beginning of the hand. Each is then dealt seven cards. After seeing your hand, the dealer may place a bet. The other players, in clockwise order, decide whether to match the bet, raise the bet, or drop out of the hand.
When all players have had a turn and all bets have been matched, starting with the dealer, each player may discard cards--up to one per opposing player--and draw new ones. The discarded cards go face-down, one each, to the opposing players, who must discard one of their own cards before picking it up.
There is then a second round of betting. After each player has had the chance to bet, fold, or raise the bet, and all bets have been met, the cards are placed on the table and the score calculated. The highest score wins the pot. In case of ties, the tied player with the highest suit wins. If both player have the same high suit, the second suit, if there is one, wins. (If one player has a second suit and one does not, the one with two suits wins.) If they both have the same first and second suit, the third suit wins. If the suits all match, the highest unmatched card wins. If the hands are identical in all ways, the pot remains on the table and the next hand is played."
