With Aleksei taking point, the journey down the mountain does not take nearly as long as the trip up did. The druid seems to instinctively know where to avoid danger. After an hour and a half after you leave Aleksei's cottage, you see Yellow Creek up ahead.
Alden, you keep a close eye out on the way down, but you don't really notice anything out of the ordinary on the way down.
Aleksei smiles wistfully as the group talks about airships. "I actually can fly an airship. Or at least, I could. But good luck getting that thing from Captain Graddor. He's cannier than he looks, that one. "
Surprisingly, no one is there to meet you at the pass, despite Chief Brightaxe's promise otherwise. As you get closer to the mine, you see a crowd of people surrounding the mine, with a tall elf you haven't seen before, dressed in the uniform of the Royal Navy, desperately trying to hold the crowd back.
Grin, on the way down the pass, begins hiding away her contraband. (The pistol, her component pouch, her books, her cards, trying to be as normal looking as possible.)
The elf waves you over. He's very tall and has straw blond hair with a fringe that goes over his eyes. "You're the adventurers wot pissed off Captain Graddor, right? Well, you might be of help. There's some sort o' beastie in the mines. We've shut down production for now until the Captain, the Chief, and Mr. Goldenrod clear out wot's down there."
A large crowd has gathered around the mines, with the few other odd members of the Navy garrison trying to maintain order. It looks as though most everyone in town is milling about or actively trying to get into the mine.
As Thalion starts to move through the crowd, the elf looks surprised, but doesn't really make a move to stop him. "Mr. Goldenrod is our naturalist, sir. A specialist on creatures of the region. Dab hand with a bow too, he is. The creatures seem to be doing something to the ore." He points out one of the few figures by the front of the mine, the human woman you noticed yesterday in an argument with Graddor. "Engineer McCalister herself noticed 'em last night right before quitting time. She made the decision to shut the mines. Boy, Captain Graddor and Lady Raskiel were not best pleased." He starts to chuckle, then realizes you all are strangers, and his face suddenly looks grim. "You can chat with her if you want to help. With the Captain and the Chief in the mines, she and her Ladyship are the only two people who can authorize entry down there."
Doctor Aleksei will look at all of you incredulously. "Does this not seem like a trap to anyone else? Do you not remember the fire assassin who almost burnt me to cinder?" He shakes his head. "If we get the next train, we'll be in Valance by nightfall."
“You’re saying they sent assassins, but only sent half of them just so they could lay a trap? I’m not sure that follows, Doctor. Come on, it’s an opportunity to gain an ally, and a means to cut ahead of the next place assassins will come for us.” Yoric whispers this
Thalion comes to an abrupt halt and spins around to examine the other elf with a suspicious eye.
"So we need permission to go into the monster-infested cave and slay the beast? Are we trying to rid the mine of a dangerous monster or of a potential scandal?"
The sailor's voice has the clearest note yet of fake politeness, as if his customer service ability was pushed to its breaking point. "We are trying to keep people safe, sir. if you want to head down in there, I'm not going to stop you. Lady Raskiel might have something to say about" He looks all of you over then says "unauthorized persons entering the mine she has a royal charter to operate."
Aleksei, meanwhile, frowns at Yoric. "I haven't survived life on the run by being reckless, bard. All I am saying is you lot need to be careful down there, if you are going down into the mine. It feels like there is more to the story than a simple mine incursion. Even if its not the Committee's handiwork."
"Well to be frank I do appreciate the insight," Nevkav says to Aleksei. "As for this mine business, more likely it is that damnable knife cult that summoned some kind of foul curse or some such. I say we gain permision from the Lady and head in to at least secure the Captain snd that ameniable Chief."
"Steal an airship only one of us can fly or aid a fool and walk into a trap.": Alden says shaking his head.
Alden thinks for a moment then speaks "I always thought we needed to take a look at the interior of this mine anyway. Its the source of great economy for the realm and a din for those acolytes we fought yesterday. My vote is spring the trap." Alden says with a smile.
"I know it is a simple thing to consider just entering here, and I am sure no one would stop us but I do insist we follow protocol and at least approach the Lady briefly to let her know of our intentions. I can do so if you would all like to wait here," Nevlav says with an unsure look.
Thalion smiles faintly as they walk, perusing the kenkus' letter until Yoric breaks the silence.
"Are we enough to crew such a vehicle? Just in case the sergeant says no," he says with an innocent shrug.

"Well, this ought to be interesting," Nevlav says as he moves past the group and takes point walking to the commotion at the mine.
"Oi, what is going on here?"

Yoric winks at the doctor. “Opportunity knocks!”
“Mr Goldenrod?” Yoric says as they get closer. “Who’s that?”

Thalion glances at his companions and grins, pointing ahead at the mine.
"There's our chance to get Graddor on our side. Let's hunt us a beastie!" And with that he surges through the crowd toward the mine entrance.
As Thalion starts to move through the crowd, the elf looks surprised, but doesn't really make a move to stop him. "Mr. Goldenrod is our naturalist, sir. A specialist on creatures of the region. “Fair enough,” shrugs Yoric. He then turns to Alden and Nevlav. “So... if Graddor is in the mine, who’s watching the ship?”

Grin, being uncharacteristically silent this far, whispers softly to Aleksei. "Da beast mebbe an agent of ya 'ags eh dock-tore?"
"The very idea of descending into a mine makes my skin crawl, yet I still vote to at least see what's down there," Thalion sighs.
"Either way, it's easier to ask forgiveness than for permission!"

“You’re right, Nevlav. It could also help to get a better idea of what’s going on.” Yoric nods.
