Azure pulls out the list that the mayor gave them and says, "Here's the list. Worm may also know if any regulars have stopped coming in. I can check with Mucor and Gwen." and he'll read out the names on the list.
Cascade - female water genasi - Blacksmith at Ember and Ice -3 days Gwen Shimmerstrand - female elf - Owner of Old Oddities general store - 1 week Mucor - male minotaur - Owner of Mushrooms & More apothecary - 1 week Oscar - male grung - Owner of Fish & Ships - 2 weeks Bog - Female Kobold - Sanitation worker - 2 weeks
Beyanna gives the room one last quick search before leaving but is unable to find anything else of value. All that appears under the bed is a layer of dust that tickles her nose. After leaving the room and shutting the door behind them, they make their way back downstairs to see Worm back behind the counter as his new mechanical companion works washing dishes and even flipping some pancakes in the kitchen. Irontail is devouring his heaping plate of food at an alarming rate, gnawing the meat between his sharp teeth. His glowing red eyes glance towards your direction before he turns to continue his meal. The older couple are nearly finished with their stack of pancakes. The old man is cutting up the last one with his fork as his little wife begins digging some coins out of a small pouch.
Norge walks up to the bar and calls out to Worm, "Hey Worm! You're usually in the know for events in the area. Have you ever heard of any nobles named Baltzack or Hamur?"
Jakob looks at old couple and knows them to be Mr. and Ms. Decker. Will Decker's name was on the list now that you think about it. The fact that He is merely an old retired fisherman may have caused you not to pay much attention to it when reading through the list originally.
Worm looks up Norge and scratches his head. "Ballsack and Hammer? They sound like an interesting pair... they throwing a party that you're looking to attend or something there Norge?" The goblin would say with a wide grin and a wink. "OH, You mean Baltzack and Hamon"He would say as he stops putting away an empty tankard. "Hmm.... yeah I heard the names... months ago. I'd say it was about two or three weeks before Triana came to town..." The goblin would pause for a moment and take a deep breath after mentioning her name. "Speaking of Triana... did you get what you needed from her room? I suppose I can leave the door open tonight and let the cleaners have at it if you got what you need... I... I'm gonna miss her. " He would add before glancing back towards his mechanical keg companion."I was glad to hear that you guys took care of the monsters that stomped her..."He would add with a serious tone as anger flashes across his face.
At the goblin's response, Norge lets out a hearty chuckle. "Yep, those are the two. Turns out they may have known Tiriana and I suspect they weren't friends. Any idea what they would be doing in Darkwater?" As for Tiriana's room, unless my friends are still looking around I think we are finished with it. It'll be sad to see someone else coming out those doors every morning though."
OOC: I assume Norge may not recognize Mr. and Ms. Decker so I'll leave that questioning to Jakob.
"I don't know anything about Tiriana being mixed up with those two. Like I said, It heard them names before I ever met her. A group of dirty looking ass holes came through looking for a guy by the name of Hamon. They said that a noble by the name of Baltzack had put a bounty on his head." The goblen would add as he picks up another clean tankard and moves to put it away. "I asked what this Hamon fella had done to that nobleman and all they told me was that it was personal. I don't know why you think Tiriana was mixed up in any of that mess. She talked to me more than most in this town and she never mentioned anything about where she came from before strolling into town." Worm would finish before giving a quick wave towards a stocky dwarf carrying some freshly cut wooden planks and a large heavy toolbox.
Norge listens intently as the goblin speaks. "Well, thanks for the information Worm. Guess I'll be on my way." Norge turns from the bar and faces his companions, "I think it's time to head out. I don't know that we're going to find any more information here at the inn."
"Thank you Worm, you are always very helpful. You have quite a knack for service, and this inn would certainly be nothing without you," Bey adds as she turns to head out of the inn.
"I would like to visit Gwen Shimmerstrand,"(DM can we assume that Bey knows her and has visited her shop a few times?) "although I suppose it makes sense to begin with whoever lives the closest. Azure, do you know who that would be?"
OOC: Started this hours ago, but never finished. So, let's say it took place while Norge was talking to Worm.
Jakob wipes his nose with his cloth and steps up behind the Deckers. "Morning, folks," he says, smiling congenially at them both. He asks after Will's health, showing genuine concern for the fisherman's well-being and his wife's mental state as she cares for her ailing husband. "Will, we've been asked to look into the plague for the mayor. Would you be willing to answer a few questions?"
How long have you been sick?
When did you know you were sick with the plague?
Did you do anything out of the ordinary around the time you think you caught the plague? Go anywhere different? Interact with anyone or anything different?
Have you had contact with any others who are stricken?
He would then ask Mrs. Decker about her health, trying to determine if she is also sick, and if not, what steps she is taking, if any, to avoid getting sick — trying to determine how the plague is caught/spread.
"I think if we split into two groups we can cover a bit more ground quickly. You can accompany me to Gwen and Mucor's shops. There just down the street. That leaves Oscar, Bog and... my mother for Mitt, Norge and Jorge." he says pausing as he thinks about his mother before adding, "Maybe she'll open up more to you guys without me around. We can meet back here around noon to go over what we've found... come on Bey, let's get to questioning." Azure walks out with a firm focused step and makes his way towards the closer of Mucor or Gwen's shops.
"Sounds like a good plan to me, Azure. Once Jakob is done asking some questions here the three of us will head out." Norge leans against the bar as he listen's to the conversation Jakob is having with the older couple.
Bey would know that Gwen's shop (Old Oddities) is just down the street and that she lives in the shops basement.
Mrs Decker finishes paying for their meal just as Jakob approaches the couple. "OH hello there young pup... " William would reply with a smile. Jakob gets the impression that both the Deckers are probably at least 15 years older than he is and that these two might be some of the oldest living humans in town. When Jakob mentions investigating the plague, the two of them look nervously at each other. "SSSHHhhhhhh" Wanda shushes towards the bearded man "Yeah... keep it down would ya.. lots O folks round here get scared when they know yer sick... and when they get scared they get to acting foolish" Mr. Decker would add as he slowly works his way off of the barstool where he was sitting. The old man remains hunched over, wearing some plain common clothes that appear to be well maintained. "If you are working for the mayor, I suppose we can answer a few questions." Mrs Decker would say as she puts her small coin purse away and slowly turns her barstool to see her husband and Jakob. As Jakob begins asking his questions, the old man would scrunch up his face and press his he thinks hard about he questions. "I think I've only been sick about four days. That was when I noticed the green and black spots on my skin. At first it was just the spots on my skin, but now I gotta keep my eyes wiped clean or they start to get all gunked up" He would say with a frown as he pulls a small cloth from his belt and wipes the corners of his eyes. As he does, you notice small black and green smears appear on the cloth. "I don't think I did anything differently though prior to noticing my spots.." He says as he scratches his bandaged hand. As he does Wanda frowns as a tiny red dot appears under the white bandage. "Every morning I go fishing and catch our dinner before coming here for breakfast.. Then after breakfast we tend to our garden and Wanda makes us lunch with the fruit and vegetables from our garden. Then for supper we eat the catch of the day and take a walk before watching the sunset." He would say as Wanda smiles. "It is very romantic" She adds as he places her hand on his shoulder... "I suppose maybe the only thing different about that day than most was that I ate catfish instead of bass like my wife. She hates the taste of catfish so I don't normally keep em but I had to bring home dinner and I only caught one bass that day. Catfish tasted pretty good though.. lots of butter and breading will make anything taste good." He would add as he holds up a bony finger. "It sure didn't smell good William, I think that was the smelliest fish you ever caught." Wanda would tease as she moves her silver hair behind her ear. "Most of us that are sick don't talk much about it.. we don't like letting others know.. but if you keep your eyes open, you'll see lots of folks with bandages or wearing long clothes even though it is hotter than the blazes. I bet people be interracting with sick ones like me and not know it all day" William would finish. When the questioning turns to Wanda, she would sit up a bit straighter and place her hands on her knees. "Oh, well I am fine... healthy as ever."She would say with a smile. "I have been being careful to keep Williams bandages cleaned.. making sure I don't touch any of the flaky dusty spots or sores..." She would say with a small frown. "I suppose if I really wanted to avoid catching it, I would let William live in the house and I would get myself a room here.. but I couldn't bare to be without him and if the sickness takes him.. then I hope it takes me too." She would say defiantly as she stands up and places an arm around William.
As Bey and Azure head out into the busy street past the dwarf fixing the door, the sounds of the street and the bright sunlight catch them off guard for a moment. It only takes them about five minutes to walk to "Old Oddities". Racks full of clothing and trinkets sit near the open door of the shop. Moving through the doorway, their eyes quickly adjust to the dimly lit shop as a very old elf wearing a large floppy hat moves to greet them. Her face is almost entirly obscured by the hat and she is wearing a long dress that you believe was probably very expensive 200 years ago. "Come in! Come in! What can I get for you today?"She would ask pleasently as she shuffles past cluttered shelves and racks containing all sorts of odds and ends.. some much more useful than others.
Jakob watches the couple leave. As they move out of sight, he wipes his own eyes with his rag. He then turns to Norge and Mitt. "Where'd the other two go?"
"Azure thought it would be best if we split up in order to cover more ground. He and Bey headed off for Gwen's and Mucor's shops to ask some questions. The three of us..." Norge motions to Jakob and Mitt, "...are supposed to cover Oscar, Bogg, and Azure's mother. We should go ahead and get started." After Norge's explanation the three head out. As they walk Norge continues the discussion. "Let's see if we can track down Oscar. So what do you two think about what the Decker's told Jakob? It all sounds like a pretty common routine. The only thing that sounds a little off is the fact that Mr. Decker ate a smelly catfish. In my opinion most fish stink but it may be worth asking Oscar if he's had any fish or food out of the ordinary when we find him."
"Morning Ms(or Mrs) Shimmerstrand. We just wanted to check in and see how you were doing. We know that recently you came down with the illness and were hoping you might be able to walk us through what took place the day you got sick. We're trying to get to the bottom of this so we can work out if there's something in common or a shared link that could lead us to finding a cure... Any information, no matter how small it may seem could be important." Azure says respectfully with a bow and a gentle smile as he motions to Beyanna upon saying we.
"Fair be our meeting," Bey says in elvish as she greets Madam Shimmerstrand. "It is nice to see you again, she adds, switching to common. "I hope that you are managing well. Yes, we taken on the task to investigate the sickness that has plagued many people in Darkwater. Have you had any suspicious patrons recently who you did not recognize, or are there any places you might have gone that are different from your normal routine?"
"Also, please let us know if there is anything you need," Bey offers to Gwen. "We are glad to be of any help, if there is something we can do assist you right now."
Jakob looks at Norg as they walk. "I agree. Nothing they said was very helpful, unless it has something to do with the fish. It will be interesting to find out how much contact other loved ones have had — to find out if the illness is contractible. Mrs. Decker doesn't seem to be staying away from old Will, and she's fine, but he hasn't been sick very long."
As Azure and Bey greet the old Elven widow, she smiles nods to them both. "I am well.." She would reply in common before turning to bey and adding in elvish "It is good to see you as well Bey." Gwen would then move past a few heavily loaded racks of water skins and tools before sitting down in a fine looking high backed wooden chair behind the counter of the shop. Gwen is a bit shorter and stockier for an elf, and while she is over 800 years old, she is just as graceful as she was in her prime. When she sits down in the chair, she is sure to smooth out her long faded green dress with small gloved hands. Her silver hair hangs down in a braid past her shoulder while her large sun hat prevents you from seeing any of her face now that she is sitting and you both are standing. "Now I don't know who told you that I was sick.. but I assure you that I am fine. No need to worry about me. I've got a couple hundred" She would reply as she takes the end of her hair in her gloved hands and begins to play with it. "Are you sure you both don't want to buy something? Otherwise if you are hungry I have some snacks downstairs.. I could go get you both some freshly baked cookies." She would say quickly as the smell of fresh cookies waft through the air.

Wanda and William give Worm a smile and a wave as they head past the dwarven carpenter and out into the morning sun. As they go, Iron tail turns after finishing his plate and uses a dagger to pick a piece of bacon from his large pointed teeth. "He'll be dead within the week I bet... I'm losing customers left and right... It's bad for business.." He would say before pulling the dagger form his mouth and inspecting the piece of bacon before licking from the blade. ""Sickness doesn't seem to make them feel bad... only look bad... " He would add before standing up from the bar. "that is until their dead"The large tiefling would then begin making his way towards the door as his heavy tail scraps its way along the wooden floor.
