Just about as soon as Kwiz made it to the end of the hallway in order to turn right, a giant arrow flew right over his head, almost parting his hair. The arrow flew past him, planting itself firmly in the wall behind him. He skids to a stop.
Everyone rolls initiative.

What you see inside the room that you're looking in is this huge contraption with what looks like a mad scientist rock gnome recluse. Bolted to the floor of this room is a rotating platform equipped with four heavy crossbows that reload automatically. Mounted above the crossbows at a height of about 6 feet is a chair equipped with pedals and levers. This clanking, clattering contraption is a Large object.
The mad looking gnome sitting on top of this contraption in the control seat is laughing maniacally.

The crossbow takes an unexpected attack on the group, shooting two arrows at the same time. One arrow will be aimed at Oban, the other will be aimed at Willem.
Arrow aimed at Oban, Attack to hit: 19 If it hits, Damage: 8

Oh, and I forgot to mention, one of the crossbows broke off right before the crossbow made an unexpected attack. So, there are currently only 3 crossbows left. The N, S, and E facing crossbows are still intact.
After Rush charged in, swung at this contraption and missed, the diminutive seemingly mad gnome starts kicking pedals and pulling on levers. The entire contraption lifts up about a foot and the gears that it's sitting on start moving and the whole thing rotates 90-degrees counter-clockwise. The contraption settles back down into place, and now, the broken crossbow is facing South.

Kwiz, even though he's standing further away from the next room, because he's less physically engaged with the crossbow, he's not as distracted by it and he hears what sounds like arguing between two or three people. (The others are too preoccupied with trying not to die.) One of them is speaking in Common, and at least one of them is speaking in Gnomish.
For Kwiz:
All he can hear is a female speaking in common saying, "Ugh! You're not getting it! I'm trying to help." A male voice is responding in gnomish in an annoyed tone of voice.
Since Kwiz speaks gnomish, he can make out the male voice saying something about not being fooled and how he's not listening...

Rush attacks, again, this time, connecting with his target. The North facing crossbow cracks and breaks off. At the same time, another arrow flies off of the Eastern crossbow.
Attack to hit Willem: 12 If it hits, Damage to Willem: 6
The crossbow misses, thankfully, as Willem (and Oban) are already pretty badly injured.
Oban attacks next with another double shortsword attack.

With that onslaught of swinging swords, Oban lays into the Eastern facing crossbow since that direction was posing the biggest threat, currently. He successfully dishes out 13 more points of damage. And, as he does, the Western facing crossbow shoots another arrow at the wall. No one was there for it to hit. The Rock Gnome, in a moment of anger, slams his hands in a fist against his legs before taking up the controls, once again.
It's now Willem's turn and he takes another swing at the contraption with his war pick.

Unfortunately, with Willem's injuries, he struggled to get a proper swing of his war pick off at the thing, and he ended up impotently hitting one of the gears of the machine only for his war pick to ineffectively bounce off.
"There's someone else down here!" Kwisatz yells to the team "We need to stop that contraption and find the king!" He then looks around for a stone, or torch, or anything fist sized to catapult at the rotating crossbow machine ((dc 13 dex or 12 dmg)). He then takes another step back, and two in the tunnel to the north ((that's where the voices are coming from yeah?)) to listen again.
Despite how smooth the cave walls and floor are, Kwiz finds a rock to use. Using his arcane abilities, Kwiz, tosses the rock in a straight line towards the catapult.

The catapult collapses in a dusty heap. The only thing standing is the chair that the mad rock gnome was sitting in, but the gnome is already on his way out and running towards the southern exit. Kwiz hears him say in Gnomish, "Well, each failure is one step closer to success!"
Also, much to Kwiz's surprise, he sprouts wings like those of a butterfly. The wings give the caster a flying speed of 30 feet.
Combat is over. Oban and Willem both look like they've seen better days. They each have an arrow planted firmly into their bodies; Oban with one in his lower abdomen, and Willem with one in his left shoulder.
Willem removes the arrows from himself and Oban and uses all 5 his Lay on Hands Pool: 2 for himself and 3 for Oban. They're still both battered pretty bad.

After the battle, Rush goes over and casts cure wounds on both Oban and Willem, healing them both up completely. Their wounds closed up and the wincing on their faces relaxed.

An odd thing happened, though. While Rush was curing Oban, tiny, insubstantial motes of light began to circle him, shedding bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light for an additional 10 feet.
Confused a little, but not overly concerned since these motes of light appear to be harmless, he began to cure Willem's wounds. As he was doing that, he also sprouted wings like those of a butterfly. Rush now also has a flying speed of 30 feet.
