How high does the pit go up? Does it look like going up goes anywhere?
The pit goes down 20 feet. That coupled with the height of the ceiling where you started means the ceiling when you are in the pit is about 30 to 40 feet above you.
The party uses the rope and makes it's way down into the pit. Owlbear crashes down on all 4 legs without an issue.
There is a tunnel to the north and one to the east and those of you with darkvision can make out a little bit of the passageway beyond. Those without darkvision cannot see!
He'll quietly go up to the entrance to the south east (the one he's closest to) and look in, looking for movement. He also checks the ceilings, looking for gricks.
Baeshra hesitates as he enters the darkness before sighing and covering his eyes for a moment, whispering in draconic. When he takes his hand away, his eyes almost seem to shine in the dark.
The group quietly sneaks forward, following Umbriel. As you go a little ways down the passageway, you can see what looks like a mine tunnel going to the north, and a natural cavern opening up before you.

As the light from Baeshra's hand illuminates about 20 feet in front of him, you all get a good look at the cavern.
Many tunnels intersect at this natural, thirty-foot-high cavern. The walls are carved with simple reliefs showing dwarf and gnome miners hard at work. On the floor below, nearly two dozen skeletons in rusted scraps of armor are scattered across the cavern floor. Some are dwarf skeletons, while others are orc remains. Half a dozen large brass lanterns stand in niches or on ledges around the cavern, but none are lit.
Suddenly, a series of shrill squeaks erupts from the ceiling above you. A swarm of stirges attack!

They didn't notice you until the light. The stirges rolled high enough on their stealth that no one saw them, this first round will be a surprise round for them.

The stirge pierces into Whistlers flesh for 7 and attaches to him. Another gets the Owlbear: 10 piercing damage. A third gets Umbriel: 4 piercing damage. Another gets Rosie: 10 piercing damage. And one finds a weak spot in Lyngheid's armor: 6
Everyone roll Initiative. If higher than 8, take your Round 2 turn. Everyone except Ireniana has a Stirge attached to them. On the Stirges turn, they will suck 1d4+3 worth of HP from you. You can use an action to detach them. There are 10 stirges that missed their attacks that flew up 10-20 feet above you.
Lyngheid hurried over to the body of her cousin, " Damn! Should have checked on them earlier. This is my fault."
She lay the body out asking the Mother to accept her fallen Kin and guide him to where he needed to go.
She then wrapped him tightly in his cloak. And placed him beside the fire ready for Gudren.
(Baeshra paid for his food and took the cost of rooms out of party fund. Marked off a ration as well.)
Baeshra will quickly cast pass without trace on the group and head down into the trench and quietly look around.

You don't see any gricks! It looks like the passageway goes on for a ways, with maybe another coming in from the north.
