"Me, no," the dwarf replies, taking another swig of ale. "Not for all the King's gold. My grandma was a fighter, though. Not for the Empire, mind you. Over in Tal'Dorei, if you can believe it. Made her money as a merc, then came here to settle down. Married my grandpa and never picked up a weapon again in her life. So, uh, a merc huh? You in town on business?"
You see the other two become a little uncomfortable at this question and glance at each other.
(Nat 1 on deception and a 5 on intelligence - Dang it! Guess this isn’t Celica’s game)
Celica groans in disappointment at losing. “Oh, Dawnfather’s darned socks! Guess I’ve got no luck today. Say, fellas, I just blew into town and heard that there’s some mean bandits in these parts. The Shadow… something? Shady Bunch? Do you know anything about them? They sound real scary, and I just wanna make sure I don’t get on their bad side or anything while roaming through these parts.”
"Heh, you sure you know this game? Not how it looks. But if you want to try again..."
"Nope, never heard of any Shady bunch," one of the players who hasn't spoken up to now says. "But there's all sorts of dangerous folk round these parts. Best to stick to your business, move on and not ask too many questions. That's my philosophy at least."
It will cost another two gold if you want to continue the game and the conversation. If so, you can roll INT again, with advantage again because they think you're completely clueless...
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Alton claps his hands together, "All good choices! Let's start with Zadash Nights." He will then strike up the tune for the song. As he plays, Alton will throw a bit of magic Celica's way and give her some bardic inspiration.
You sing well, and feel the crowd with you; the dwarves in particular like this one and join in for the chorus. Balassar, you find your conversation interrupted at times by the dwarves singing - though you also know this song and can join in, if you wish.
There's no more money from the crowd directly, but you get the sense that you have gone down very well and both you and the inn would profit from repeat performance on a future night.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Balassar just shakes his head "No, stopping through for some personal stuff and get some information for a lead on work though. You got anything that needs a mercenary's skill set?"
Celica is getting legitimately frustrated now, barely hiding it beneath a smile. “Oh… look at that! I lost! … again!” She sighs. “Okay, look, you don’t know about any bandits, but what about people with scars? You seen anyone with a big scar on their face? Biggest scar you’ve ever seen, go!”
"Not right now," one dwarf says. "There's always folk looking to hire on guards for trading wagons or the like, but you look a bit too skilled for that. Beside, the only people really hiring at the moment are the Righteous Brand. For the Empire, you know?"
"You're gonna want to head to Zadash for that kind of work," says another. "The big city always has trouble that needs putting down.
Balassar, your insight tells you these three are what they appear; local workers or traders, out to relax and chat for the night, and no knowledge of shady goings on in the town.
The man thinks for a moment, then grins. "Yeah. Sure. I know a guy with a big scar. In fact, give us a minute to finish our drinks and we'll take you to meet him. How does that sound?"
The others nod, down their ale and start to clear up the dice, ready to head out.
Balassar nods "I figured as much. We just came from there, unfortunately first night of travel we found a house being burned down. Thankfully the kids were safe."
Celica gasps. "Really? Oh, sure! That would be great! But first, let me grab another drink!"
She gets up and heads towards the bar, buys another ale, then heads over to the stage and puts some copper in whatever Alton is accepting tips in. "By the way, you are so talented! Say, do you know the song..." Celica states, loud enough that the guys at the table can hear her. Then she leans in closer and whispers, "Those guys say they're going to lead me to a guy with a scar on his face. You and Belassar need to follow us. Best case scenario, it's the guy we're after. Worst, I'm about to meet some other guys that would probably be totally fine with killing me and dumping my body in a ditch. Just thought you should know!"
She takes some steps back. "Thank you so much for your music! It's so beautiful. Have a nice night!" She says before heading back to the shady guys. "Alright, sorry fellas, I'm ready to roll!"
Balassar just nods "Yeah, felt bad cause it almost took out some kids. Everyone kept saying a lamp fell over, but..." he just looks at the dwarf "I don't think that's the case. If I could ever find out what happened, help take care of a problem around here and make it a better place." he just chugs his drink and smashes it down as a smirk crosses his face "If someone could just point me in the direction of that problem, I'd take it down for free."
Four coppers for the ale. "Right this way, friend.", the apparent spokesperson for the group says. The men lead you outside the inn...
(Let's see what Alton and Balassar do before we continue.)
Balassar:
A dwarf looks at you, at the other dwarfs, and then their eyes shift towards the men playing dice with Celica, just as Celica is walking up to Alton. "Either them," he says in a low voice, "or their friendly with them. And that's all I'm going to say." One of the other dwarfs add, in a fairly loud voice, "So, what do you think Beneker thinks he was doing on the left wing? I reckon the 'Stains are sunk this year if he can't get his act together." They begin to have a conversation that seems to be about some kind of game, and you are not sure you are following much of the meaning.
Alton chuckles loudly, "Of course I know that song! What kind of bard would I be if I didn't, but you'll have to come back tomorrow night to hear it I'm afraid." He gives a grand gesture to the room and bows, "Y'all have been a great audience! Tonight's show is done, but be sure to come back tomorrow night for more."
Alton gives some time for the group to leave the inn before making his way to Balassar, "Looks like Celica might have gambled her way into some trouble. Care to tag along to watch her back, or stay and talk sports with your new friends here?" He doesn't really wait for Balassar to answer, but slips the other sending stones into his hand before walking out of the place to tail Celica before they get too far away.
Balassar just smiles at the dwarf as he drop 5 gold on the counter "Barkeep, keep their drinks flowing tonight." he says standing up and stretching.
As Alton comes over and confirms what they said he just smiles larger "Looks like we'll get a good workout in before bed." he says following the bard out.
Celica, you accompany the men as they lead you out of the inn and along the main street, the same way you entered town. Then one diverts you, leading you down a side street . It's past sunset - the market has closed and there are fewer people around.
Alton and Balassar, you follow, keeping an eye on Celica and the men walking with her. Make a Stealth check if you are trying not to be noticed by them. You see other men, who had been waiting in a side street, join the group.
Celica, there are now six men walking around you, almost like an honour guard. You're certain there weren't that many at the dice game. Where have the others come from?
You're in a dark alley now. A good place for murder. The group comes to a halt, and you stop alongside them. Five men continue to surround you but pull back a little, leaning on the walls or glancing around. The air is cool, menacing but not actively hostile. The last man stands in front of you. "Now, why don't you tell me who you are and what your business with a certain scarred man might be?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Alton steps lightly through the streets, letting Balassar catch up to him whispering, "Remember what that monk said, float like a butterfly and sting like a bee." Giving Balassar some bardic inspiration.
(For 10 minutes, Balassar can add 1d8 to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw. This can be added after seeing the roll, but before knowing the outcome.)

That is... good to hear, a dwarf says. We get news of troubles in the countryside from time to time. A house burned down, you say?
Celica:
Alton and Balassar are in the room; Alton performing, and Balassar chatting at the table with three dwarves. Is there anything you want to do?
