The town and inn are much as you left them. If anyone saw you fight or leave, they didn't raise the alarm and so your journey back to the inn is untroubled. You can, if you wish, make a Perception check as you go, if you think you would be looking actively for something - but tell me what you're looking for.
The inn is shutting up for the night, and no customers remain. The same halfling who greeted Alton when he first arrived is about to lock the door, and lets you in with an uncaring nod. He gestures vaguely in the direction of where you suppose your rooms will be.
Will you head to your rooms for a long rest and a night's sleep?
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Balassar just picks up the crate and begins to walk back into town, making sure to put it back where they found it before going back to the inn for the night. He just keeps his eyes open for anyone they may have fought, or that may be watching them a little more closely than usual after dropping the crate off.
Balassar, you are confident that no-one is watching you unusually closely or attempting to follow you; you have a good eye for these things. The town is quiet, and mostly asleep. You certainly don't see any of the group who attacked Celica - they have either gone to ground or fled the town entirely while you were busy with your captive.
Balassar just looks at his companions "Don't think anyone is following us. Do we want to rest and head out in the morning? Our friend might've gone back and warned them."
You find your rooms easily; they are empty and prepared for you to spend the night in relative comfort, compared to camping on the road. There are small but comfortable beds - Alton's room has halfling-sized furniture, which is not always in the case in inns across the Empire.
As they go up to their rooms "Place items in front of your door - if anyone wishes to room with me for safety feel free."
If no one decides to join him in his room, he will just begin to place a chair in front of the door blocking the handle and moving furniture to in front of the door. He will just look at the window and see if it has any shutters to close for some blockade or privacy. He then pulls out his rope and tries his best to tie the shutter together or use the rope to keep them shut. He will then take off his armor placing his sword and shield near the bed to grab quickly and just keep his cloak on as he sleeps.
Alton heads to his room and is surprised to see the halfling sized furniture. Feeling like it would be poor manners to rearrange furniture, he will instead move pillows and use some extra clothes to make it look like someone is sleeping in the bed. Afterwards he'll pick a corner and make himself look like a pile of tossed clothes gear.

You all go to your separate rooms, and get a good night's sleep. This is a quiet town, and quieter at night; you don't keep watch and there's no need, or so it seems. You are undisturbed and wake in the morning feeling refreshed. You have completed a long rest.
You gather in the inn's common room for breakfast, just the three of you. A member of the inn's staff, someone you haven't met before, a middle-aged no-nonsense half-elf woman brings your breakfast of porridge from the kitchen. As she plonks the bowls down she says, "This note was left for you, I think. I found it on the bar this morning." She offers it to any of you, to the first who takes it from her hand.
Balassar gets up early to get his work out in and some training with his sword, even though he offered to the one kid to show up he isn't surprised when he doesn't. When he is done he just goes into the tavern and sits at a table order a drink and food. When the woman brings the letter he just nods taking it "Thanks" he says as he begins to read it over.
Balassar just looks at his companions "Looks like they just left in the middle of the night." he says taking a bite of his food and handing the letter to Alton.
Alton takes a look at the letter, "Oh, well that is a shame. Sally was really nice. I hope she is safe wherever she goes." He places the letter down on the table and continues to eat his breakfast.

Alton quietly eats his breakfast, his eyes scanning back and forth like he is reading something. Once finished he pushes the dishes to the side and sighs, “Do you think I’m a bit too intimidating, or is it just too jarring witnessing a halfling be intimidating?” He looks around the inn’s common room, “Regardless, if that guy’s information is correct, we’re probably going to want some help.” He looks at Balassar, “What do you think? Want to split up, maybe you can see if the guard post has anyone they can spare, and I’ll head to the town center and make some kind of recruitment speech. We can meet up back here around midday.”

Balassar just nods “Return the crate and go back to sleep.”
We will take the crate back and head back to the inn to get some sleep.

It reads:
Alton meets up with Balassar and Celica in the common room for breakfast. He looks over curiously as he starts to eat his food, "What's it say?"
