Bree, you get he padlock open easily and are able to get the hatch open. As it opens a gust of extremely foul air washes over you. You feel your stomach start to heave. I'll need a Con Save to keep from loosing dinner.
Flaeon, you are able to find what looks like a stable way into what's left of the captain quarters. The roof has collapsed but there's room for you to hunch over and crawl in far enough to take a look. Give me an investigate check please.
Gallo is keeping watch. Oscar if there's anything you want to do in this post before the boat moves again just let me know
you don't know a whole lot about ships other than what you've learned from your mentor from his travels and talking to your companions about their studies but it strikes you that the cabin seems to have been bare. You don't see any nautical tools scattered about, no broken or burnt desk or chairs, no bunk, no giant treasure chests of your fantasies. It seems it was totally stripped out.
Faleon crawls back out, looking disappointed and confused.
"There's nothing in there. I don't mean it's all smashed up and useless. I mean, nothing. As in, nothing was in there. No tools. No furniture. No treasure." As he says this last part, there's a particularly pained expression on his face. "Wherever these ships are coming from, whatever reason they're coming flaming over the waterfall, the captain's quarters here at least has been stripped bare before being sent down here."
An odor of not just decay but wet putrescence in combination with burnt flesh washes over Bree. Unfortunately she's is not able to keep the bile down and doubles over retching. (You'll be spending the rest of this 'action' emptying your stomach and pulling yourself back together)
(I'm going to give Oscar and Gallo a chance to make their 'action' before rolling for the ship movement. Anyone who tries to get into the hatch will have to pass a DC15 con save or start puking too)
As the hatch is opened and Bree begins gaging at the wretched smell, Oscar would curse under his breath and bury his face into his arm while holding out his lantern in front of him. Making sure to only breath through his mouth, he would attempt to shine his light and look down into the hole.
Perception 22
(OOC: I had assumed that Oscar was standing more in the center of the deck and not immediately next to Bree. He only moved to help investigate once she got the door open)
Oscar is not immediately planning on heading into the hatch.. but let's just see what happens if he does. 18
Gallo sees that the danger is a bit off and slowing down, so after Faleon describes the cabin being stripped of everything he takes a quick walk-around on deck to where the wheel and mast and the important bits should be. He's looking to see if any of it has been stripped or purposefully damaged as well.

Oscar getting closer to the hatch to shine the light in feels his stomach churn but is able to endure the stench and gets closer. Peering down you can see...
A steel ladder that leads below decks into a cargo hold. In the hold you see piles of bodies. Many charred, some half eaten, all obviously dead and emaciated. You're not sure how many there are but you'd guess 50 or more. You also notice that there doesn't seem to be any cargo anywhere you can see.
Gallo now with the information from Faleon takes a more thorough look on deck...
and finds it's sparse as well. He figures the boat going over the falls could have dislodged stuff from deck but there's no ropes attached to spars, no cargo held down by nets. None of the things he'd seen in drawings of ships.
"Hell! There all dead.. these ain't ships.. their floating flaming coffins used to destroy the dead.. thats why there's no furnature!" oscar would shout. "I'm getting out of here.. someone is setting these ships aflame and sending them down stream to dispose of them." The halfling would shout as he begins to head off of the ship.
"OK, well, I think we're done on this ship." Faleon says, "There's nothing of value here, and judging by Bree's reaction, those puppies aren't doing so well. Any objection to avoiding a major ship collision?"
With that, Faleon deftly disembarks via the mast again onto dry land, and immediately looks for any possible way to get aboard the new flaming ship. (Is it entirely ablaze, or are there less-flaming parts? Is it also low in the water?)
Muttering so that none of the others can hear him, "... told them we should have checked the burning one first, nothing of value on that stupid first ship."
Bree finishes being sick, and follows the others to shore. "Whew, that was definitely something I could have gone without smelling." She says as she shivers slightly from the experience. "Well, want to head on back to town?" She quickly pushes off the awful smell and is ready to continue on. "Or shall we head back to do our fishing. Fishing might get bad after all of those dead things get into the water you know, so it might be the best fishing for a while right now."
Faleon, the other ship is 42 feet away from crashing into the wreck. It isn't completely on fire, there are areas that were put out after going over the falls. You don't see an easy way to get onto it. At it's closest it's 15-20 feet from shore moving diagonally down the river. You could swim to it and look for a way to climb or possibly get a rope to it from shore so you could pull yourself up onto it. A grappling hook would be helpful for that. Even though your spell slots are shot you do have sorcery points. So if you wanted to get there you could find a way, it will be dangerous and the ships could crash together in as few as 3 actions. It's your call.
(I was going to ask about the sorcery points - I had assumed that they'd have been used as well. It feels a bit like cheating to still have access to a 2nd level spell casting when everyone else is out! So whilst I could technically Misty Step onto the ship, and jump off into the water a couple of turns later, I'll decline - feels a little too much like gaming the system!)
Faleon really wants to have a look at the new ship, but he also doesn't want to be left behind as his friends tell the exciting, strange news to folks back in town. He follows the others, walking slowly, constantly turning to watch the flames burn in the darkening sky.
With some of you being a little more shook up than others but feeling you have enough information to bring home you all head back to The Dale. On your way back it's decided that the most logical thing to do would be to bring this information to the Elders in the council hall, although you're not sure anyone will be there at this hour. Your trip back is uneventful and to your surprise there are people already gathered at the council hall. Blobbin Weatherbow, the town elder and councilors Wilbur Stockroot, and Hilna Hayston. As you enter you overhear them discussing an arm that was found in one the fishing nets. Seeing you all enter they look a little confused "Yes, hello. What are you doing at the council hall this time of night?"
"Well you see it all started with a smelly foot." Bree says with a smile for the elders. "Hey, who has the foot?" She calls to her friends. When one of them brings it out she nods. "We followed the foot, well at lease we followed where we thought it might have come from since, obviously, the foot can't walk any longer..." She chuckles at the idea of a foot walking by itself. "Anyhow, we headed upstream and found this boat." She sighs then. "I thought it was full of puppies, but, sadly, it was just full of dead bodies..." She glances to the elders. "Can we get someone to bring a few new puppies into town?" She asks, then nods as she sees their stern faces. "Oh, and another boat, on fire if you can believe it, came right over the falls and everything." She shrugs. "We didn't check out the second boat, as it was still on fire, but decided to head back here." She pauses. "I really would like to get some new puppies in town though..."
HIlna says "Oooh, puppies. Well I think that's a great idea" (She is Bree's great aunt, once removed after all) She is interrupted by Wilburs fist slamming to the table "See, I told you this would happen! You start letting strange folk into town and strange things start happening!" (He is obviously one who voted against you all being mentored) Blobbin interjects "You hush now Wilbur. We'll not be going over that again and I have some questions... Now you say this boat was full of dead bodies? Was this some kind of battle? What kind of injuries did these dead suffer? And this other boat that came over the falls, you say it was on fire, were there people aboard that one?"
"The boats were empty... Anything of value was stripped clean from them floating coffins." Oscar would say stepping forward. "I saw a whole bunch of skinny dead bodies in the belly of that boat. I think the bodies were dumped in there before the ships were set on fire and send down river!" He would say as he scratches his scruffy sideburns with his left hand. "I didn't look real close at them bodies... I don't know if they starved to death or if they were just a bunch of malnurished folks that somebody decided to kill."
(OOC: Would oscar have noticed wounds on the bodies?)
