Farnakees and Mithrokk believe the elf has vanished from sight.
Rastaris and Alianna see him in a corner, munching on banana chips.
OOC - You didn't have Stealth as a monk?
Farnakees and Alianna bought suspect something unnatural about the silver-backed rats. Alianna is almost certain they have been conjured or altered by magic, but she cannot confirm this without using a Detect Magic spell.

The roughly-hewn, cramped tunnel extends about 15 feet to the southeast, before ending in bedrock. Broken shovels and pickaxes litter the tunnel, carelessly cast aside by unseen workers. The tunnel is partly carved from bedrock, but Lathalas also notices worked stone in the rubble. Perhaps a dwarf might be better able to discern clues from the stonework.
There is a small opening at the end of the tunnel, large enough to stick a hand or a head through.

OOC: How long to Phandalin? A day? If you say we can buy stuff, I'll buy. But if we're going to spend time posting about our travels to Phandalin, I'd rather just get on with the adventure. More fun that way.

OOC: I second that - whatever the interlude is (Phandalin, long rest, etc), can we fast forward back into adventuring?

OOC - No one is examining the tunnel?
Lathalas examines the tunnel.
OOC: Can we still grab some stuff from town? Thinking of getting a shortbow if there's some ranged combat in our future.
Mithrokk was (see post #828)
OOC: Had stealth as a monk but kicked it up a notch. Are flanking rules in play or strict 5E (no flanking?)
OOC: I have a light crossbow you're welcome to.
OOC: Thank you for the offer, but it's not the weapon of our people so I have no proficiency in it. :(
even if no flanking, i think not that big a deal anymore:

OOC - It's up to you what you decide to do. You can continue on to Phandalin from here.
OOC: A mage hand perhaps.
OOC: So I take it we are not taking a long rest?
Mithrokk would like to examine the stonework.
OOC: Any advantage to an investigation check?
OOC: How about a long bow instead?
OOC: Can I suggest that after Mithrokk examines the stonework, we take a long rest.
OOC: Mithrokk is agreeable to that :-)
OOC: Okay with me.

OOC - Mithrokk, make an Investigation check with advantage.

OOC: Technically we have not solved the rat problem for the innkeeper.
