Once the Captain comes in, I approach him, and say, "I was up all night waiting for you. Just a question I have is, why didn't we leave last night? Not questioning authority or anything, I'm just curious."
“Eh? Why, the winds. We would’ve had a hard time putting out to the west with the waves pushing us south.” The captain gazes thoughtfully at the grey sea. “The worst of it has passed by now.”
"Eh, alors! I am Dane Raphael. I'll be the magus on this voyage. I remember you from last night, but I'm afraid I didn't catch your name."
"Dane. Greetings,"replies the Caliban. "I am Skulk, teller of bad jokes but always the most handsome member of the crew. I'm sorry to say, but you'll have to settle for second-most handsome, Dane. Magus, you say? Well, I hope being a magus comes in handy when the weather's contrary, the captain's short of temper, and the grog is running low."
"Ah, that's a tragedy. I have been so used to being the most attractive of men and women; I'm devastated. Oh well, what is life without competition? As far as that goes, I'm not sure exactly how I'll be used, but he asked for one of us to come along just in case. I suppose we will find out!"

The heavy rain of the previous night has lessened to a light drizzle, and a fog the color and density of old pea soup rolls in from the sea.
The Candlelight has seen better days. Her yellow paint has been chipped and weathered by the unrelenting sea, and her sails hang sadly. Nevertheless, she is a seaworthy vessel. A heavy harpoon is mounted on her bow, but the true art of whaling is done from the rowboat on the open sea, where it is man against the whale and the salty waves.
You sign your name in a ledger and proceed up the wooden plank and onto the whaling vessel, leaving the comforts of dry land behind you for the fury of the seas.
"Well, it was a pleasure, Skulk. I'm sure I'll be seeing plenty of you over the next weeks. I must go meet with the captain for a moment before we set off." Dane waves at Skulk before stepping aboard and looking for the captain.
"Ah, what have I gotten myself into? How did we get here, Dane?" He whispers under his breath.

Nylia signs the ledger and boards the ship, finding a hammock (assuming we're sleeping in hammocks below deck) in a corner. She puts her pack down and goes back above deck, waiting for further orders.
Dane finally finds the captain downstairs. "Captain, if I may have a minute? I was directed by the temple to get instructions from you as to how you want me to serve with the crew. The magi greatly appreciate your patronage of the temple, and I appreciate the stipend you're providing me."

Luc-Pierre replies between orders. "Roll that barrel into the spirits room, Wilson! I'm afraid I'm somewhat preoccupied at the moment. Garrick! I want you to carry that crate like it's your own dear grandmother, not a sack of potatoes! Talk to Whisper, my first mate. He'll explain what your duties are to be. You'll find him in my personal quarters. "
After looking on deck, Nylia would find the captain downstairs, have a similar conversation asking him about tasks to do, and head toward the captain's quarters where Whisper is. She knocks on the door.
"Come in." Rasps a voice from within, dry and cracked like damp parchment left in the sun. You push open the door to reveal a simple room containing a bunk, a desk, and a chair. Maps and books are stacked on a bookshelf against the wall. The cloaked figure you saw the night before stands over the desk, studying a map of the Sea of Sorrow. Its bloodshot eyes regard you from behind the white silk mask.
“You’re duties are the same as every other sailor aboard this ship, and that’s what the captain asks of you.” Whisper chokes in his broken voice. “Do your work well and you could be giving orders of your own to the crew by the end of the week. Do your work poorly, and it’s the lash. No law applies out here but the captain’s word.”
"Yes sir!" Nylia heads for the pile of cargo being loaded onto the ship and helps bring it aboard, listening to the captain's directions about where to put it.
After helping load things, Dane would go meet with Whisper. "Good morning, boss. I was directed to meet with you regarding my duties as a magus. Is there anything outside the norm that is expected of me?" (OOC: If not, that's fine, I just wanted to touch base)

"Captain's word...the lash..." mutters Skulk as he lumbers to the main deck. "I must be returning to the sea."
He then sets to the task of carrying and stowing the crates, barrels, and sacks that are coming aboard. "Let me know when you see the rum....or the ale...or the brandy!" he yells out to no one in particular.
"You're the cleric?" Whisper asks. "You'll have to be ready every hour of the day, and night for that matter. There will be no shortage on injuries out at sea." He leads you belowdecks to a narrow room lit only by a single gas lamp. A long wooden board serves as a table, and saws and other rusty implements hang from hooks on the wall. A man with a wild beard and a strange light in his eye is sitting on the bloodstained table, reading a book.
"This is Little, the ship's surgeon." You notice there is a hint of anger in Whisper's gravelly voice. "He's here with his saw when your magic isn't enough."
"Ah, hello Little. I'm Dane Raphael. I feel that we may be working together much." Dane looks around. "Alors, this is cozy." Looking back at Whisper, "I can be ready whenever aid is needed, just let me know what needs done. In the meantime, I'll be following yours and the captain's orders for my day to day?"

(@PoorTom: What kind of ship?)
(It is essentially a whaling vessel from the 1700s, or the equivalent of a sailing ship in D&D terms.)
Dane, the captain is supervising the loading of barrels and crates of provisions belowdecks.

Nylia bows respectfully. "Captain Luc-Pierre told me to come to you to find out my duties aboard The Candlelight."
Skulk, after learning the first mate's identity, follows Nylia to speak with Whisper.
