(Consider Lindale's gem sold - I subtracted the price (7gp), it was more for RP, than for anything else)
Lindale went to the smithy with Hatch (safety in numbers!) but while he was negotiating a special order, she was wondering about something more simple. A chain-short - new, relatively light, of simple yet practical design - was everything she expected from a "true adventurer's armor". It was not flashy but at least in her own eyes she looked more serious (and more prepared too - the beast was really, truly impressive!).
She did not bother the Cyclops with questions (sure, his apprentice - or whoever it was - could help), paid the price asked of her, and left the place without interrupting discussion. Her next stop was potions and healing supplies - magic is good, sure, but a more conventional backup never hurts. When she returned to the tavern, she felt like she is ready to take any beasts on her own now!
Brocc comes down some time later, with a decently-sized mechanical spider walking behind him. He moves to the table the others are sitting at and waves to the spider. "Here you go, my creation." The spider stands behind his chair as Brocc takes a seat.
The spider has a built-in seat and currently has a lance in a holder along one side and a pair of hand axes in holders in front of the saddle. He answers any questions the others have, ordering a drink as he does so. Once questions are done he glances to the others.
"We've heard of a few things needing doing around here. What do you guys want to look into next?" He asks with a serious look in his eyes.
Rufus eyeballing the strange contraption that Brocc has created says, "I heard talk of a missing barge worker plucked from the docks or barge he was working on and carried away. It might be a case of a drunkard; but it may also be something more sinister at work. Shall we look into that?"
Gilber eyes the mechanical contraption warily as he polishes glasses but eventually shrugs, the two graunies stare at the spider in rapt fascination from the top of the fireplace.
"I second that relics thing, since the Hog House is relatively nearby and it sounds simple enough. Then I'd like to see about what got that bargeman. Don't want anything dangerous to be left snatching folks up," Hatch said.
"Um-hum," Lindale barely listened, just nodding in agreement - her attention belonged to the spider, since the moment it walked in. "How?!"that was the firs question, but druid did not stop there and Brocc the Inventor would have to patiently describe every minor detail about his invention. Not that Lindale ever planned to recreate it, but the thing did not belong to any of "her" worlds - it was not truly magical and, apparently, was not alive in any conventional meaning.
"Can I ride it too?"Most likely it was impossible - by half-evlen standards she was not that bit, but not a gnome either (by far), still she had to ask. With Brocc's final "no" she sighed, patted the spider for the last time and joined the discussion more attentively. "A missing worker? Just like your friend. May be we should begin with that? What if he is still alive - where ever he is now? And we waste time wandering around, we miss the chance to save him?"
"Sounds good to me." Brocc says. "Let's find out what took this man first and see what that leads us to. we might want to stop at the Hog-House at some point, just to see if they are wanting relics we find as we explore, because that might be something to do while we do these other things we have heard about."
"So we inquire about the disappearance of the bargeman, and at some point ask Hog House about what relics to look for. Sounds good to me," Hatch said, getting up and asking "Which way to the barge? No point in still hanging around now, sunlight's wasting so let's go." Blunt as ever.
The companions leave the market square and head south on Lion Street until they reach the docks, the oldest part of Chalice the docks have been built over and rebuilt many times during its history.
A dozen or so flat bottomed barges are berthed and loading or unloading cargo and the docks are crowded with hard working humans, gnomes and various flavours of orcish folk.
The Silver River lies here flowing from the Forest of Spiders in the south eastern Moonstone Hills, past Tegris and through the town of Chalice before finally joining the Catfish River away to the west.
There are a number of...tavern is too kind....crowded drinking halls here and a group of people talking with a couple of guards, nearby are some sturdy sailors quarters and a number of carpenters and shipwrights.
"I say we speak to the two guards and the group around them. If someone was snatched by something, it might have been reported to them," Hatch suggested.
Somehow Lindale managed to avoid visiting the docks of Chalice - as lively as they were, the place was a bit too ... spirited to her taste (and weak sense of self preservation). Now, from the safety of the group, she looked around with an open curiosity, for a moment even forgetting about the reason they all came here. Ships (even when they are just barges) can awake a wanderlust in the most homeloving person (which she was not).
She did not plan to talk anyway and just nodded - sure, let's talk to the guards - and followed the group to the guards.
The two orc-blooded guards span about as the spider-man-automaton thing approached and their hands hovered over their weapons for a moment before seemingly recognising him.
" Uh...yes?"

Between the turtle man, the demon-blood and the mechanical spider lets just say chances of people not noticing you is 0. Which is not a bad thing when looking for information...
Rufus performs a sweeping bow to the two guards. As he rises be says, "Well met! We heard there was some excitement on the docks, what with a man that was snatched. Though I suspect he partook a bit too much in drink and fell overboard. We be looking into the disappearance all the same. Might ye fine gentlemen know of what ship we be seeking?"
Rufus smiles at the guards as he awaits their response.

" Ship? Oh, over there. The Duanphen. Nice little river barge. Have a chat to the master, she should be aboard."
Looking across you see a medium sized flat bottomed barge piled with wool bales and barrels. An old woman with one arm and an enourmous shock of grey hair is directing the loading.

Atop his spider Brocc decides to keep to the dry land and not venture out onto the docks. He trusts his spider's footing, as he built the thing, but is a little gun-shy of risking it falling into the water just after he finished working on the thing. He would watch as the others start speaking with the one-armed woman, hoping they could learn what was needed for the group to aid in this issue. As he waits he would glance up and down the docks, looking for anything out of place, or people seeming too-interested in the conversation his companions were having with the woman.
Rufus content to allow Banzo to take the lead on their inquiry, looks about the docks and in particular the barge in question. He examines the ship from the angles available to him, in an attempt to see if there might be any sign left behind the snatcher.

Atop his spider mount Brocc shrugs. "Seems like as good of place to start as any other." He agrees. "Let's see what the guards know."

The old woman looked up and moved across to Banzo suprisingly quickly, jumping the gap to the dock with ease.
" Suthida. Bargemistress of the Dauphen. I've seen some big turtles in my days on the Silver...but not many that could talk."
Her face looked sad as Banzo said why they were there.
" Yeah, what do you wanna know?"
