You see parts of a mechanism that probably act as a trigger for the hand crossbow, a lot of clockwork and moving parts. Whatever the actual trigger is, the crossbow appears to be in a completely inert state. You would guess that there's nothing in this room that would activate it - more likely someone somewhere else in the complex has control.
Wash is going to see whether he can disable or jam the crossbow, so it cant be used against them later. Also, are there any other passageways or to the north or east?
It takes a bit of time, and doesn't look quite as secure as you'd like, but it's holding, and there's no way for the crossbow to trigger while it's in place.
Alas Alton, this lock seems to be beyond your skill. You spend a good ten minutes attempting to pick the lock, but you are unsuccessful.
(If you want to spend an hour making a second attempt, you can roll again with disadvantage, otherwise you can attempt to break the door down or find the key.)
Alton just shakes his head and puts the tools away. "Oh well, can't expect to get it on the first try." He heads back to Wash and Balassar. "I think there was another tunnel in that first room we were in, if you guys wanted to check that out before moving on. Maybe we can find some keys along the way for this door."

Wash replies "Yes, I think that following the tunnel to the north is a good idea. Maybe we can avoid stepping into that room with the metal floor altogether and go around?"
You return to the chamber where you fought the kobolds, and look to the north. You see a fork, with one passage headed north-east, and another more directly north. You see glimpses of the chambers at the end of each, furniture and no immediate signs of large numbers of creatures. Which way are you heading?
You follow the passage, and it quickly opens up into a dank, dreary cavern sectioned off by walls of iron bars that divide the area into three cells, one of which is occupied by a figure lying on a straw mat. Seated on a small chair against the west wall is a kobold that jumps as it hears you approach.
Yes please, Wash's investigation is 17

What are you jamming into the mechanism? Make a Sleight of Hand check to try to wedge it in and fully jam it.

The cavern leads back to the passage you entered through; there aren't any other openings that you see.
Wash takes the shard of bronze (from prison I believe) and tries to wedge it in, sleight of hand:10

With a smile Alton will take out his newly purchased thieve's tools and attempt to pick the lock.

Balassar just nods "Maybe. Though always willing to look for a fight when needed."
Wash replies "Yes, I think that following the tunnel to the north is a good idea. Maybe we can avoid stepping into that room with the metal floor altogether and go around?"
Balassar just nods in agreement "Just point the way and I'll start heading there."
Wash walks back the way they came and starts walking up the south passage as stealthily as possible whilst carrying the light source.

[I was going to let someone else choose, but I'm impatient, so:]
Wash gestures towards the north east passage, does a 'what do you guys think' gesture, then moves that way.
Balassar just nods as he begins to move towards the Northeast passage.
Alton follows behind Balassar with his crossbow at the ready.

Roll initiative.
