Well now, the Watchmaster says as you finish your tale, quite an impressive sequence of events.
Yinra has been watching from the corner, listening silently and smiling faintly.
It seems a great threat has been uncovered, and I believe dealt with, though I will send my guards up to the mountain to inspect and secure the site. Perhaps I can recruit you to guide them, Mistress Emberwind, as you have shown such leadership in these matters already.
The elf frowns slightly, but nods: I'm sure you can afford my fee, Bram.
Excellent, the Watchmaster says. He calls a guard in, and Yinra leaves, looking moderately pleased with herself, saying: If you ever run into any more trouble boys, you might find me around. Or perhaps not. Who can say? She walks out of the office and the door is closed behind her.
Bram smiles and sits down again. Captured and without her weapons? That must have been entertaining to see. My apologies gentlemen, Mistress Emberwind is a skilled fighter though rather reckless, and she's useful to the city and to me in what she can accomplish on her day. It doesn't serve me to rub her nose in what was obviously rather embarrassing for her, and she did bring me some useful documents that perhaps you missed. So I have given her a share of the reward. I hope you don't mind, he adds in a tone suggesting it won't matter much if you do.
It seems that you have saved the lives of everyone in the town from the plans of a madman. It's a shame that the town won't know about it. I'm afraid it would cause a panic if this was to be widely spoken of, so I must insist that you do not speak of his plans to destroy the town or of his alliance with Xhorhas. Do feel free to tell a modified version, with those elements removed. I'm sure you'll think of something.
A gnome guard arrives carrying three small coin pouches. Your reward. I'm not sure we agreed a specific reward, but the town is not stingy in its own defense, nor is it short of means.
If you take the pouches, you will find 40 platinum pieces in each.
Wash thanks the Watchmaster "it a pleasure and I appreciate your generosity. I can't speak for Alton and Balassar, but I think we worked well together. If we can aid the people of Hupperdook in any other matter, I for one would be happy to partner up again and provide assistance."
Wash looks at Alton and Balassar hoping that they share his feelings.
Alton visibly winces at being told he can't mention the town being in danger. "But that is the best part of telling a story of heroics. How can you have brave heroes defeating the bad guy if there isn't any great danger?!Sure stopping a prison break is a good story; but stopping a prison break that leads to uncovering and stopping a traitorous plot is an even better story." Alton huffs a little feeling like he is getting cheated out of telling a great story. "I don't want to get into trouble though and it will take me a while to make it sound really good. So, I guess I won't tell this story for a little bit." Alton takes his share of the reward, "Thank you for the business. Um... can we keep the badges too?"

This is an unusual circumstance. Yes, I think I would be willing to let you keep the badges. But be warned. Every time you use them, word of this will reach me. If I judge that use to be in the interest of the town, and within the bounds of the law, then all well and good. If not, then I will take them back.
The Watchmaster looks half as though he can't believe what he's saying, but Alton is very persuasive, and your deeds also speak for themselves.
I don't feel I've said enough yet. On behalf of the town and its people, thank you for what you have done. I think that we all owe you our lives. I wish you could tell your story - and I'm sure one day you will. But this... this act on the part of Xhorhas. Well. He looks shaken for a moment. There are always hostilities, always mistrust, but to try to destroy Hupperdook itself. It's... an outrage. And a severe escalalation. Have no doubt, the King will hear of what has happened. And I'm afraid, with that in mind, I will need to detain you a little longer.
You are each escorted separately to a different room by a young guard, who sits you down at a desk and asks you to write out, in as much detail as you can, the story of what has happened and what you have done. I assume that you will not refuse and will not change any of the points you've mentioned - this seems to be a formality that's expected of everyone.
After an hour or so, you reconvene in the great entrance hall of the building, and Wash, you notice someone waiting that you recognise, sitting quietly on a bench at the side of the room near the entrance: Jent Horick, a gnome who is one of the servants at the Goldcannon Estate. He smiles as he notices you, and comes over to speak with you. Master Washburne, it is good to see you. Word of your safe return has reached the estate, and Master Goldcannon would very much like to speak to you and your friends on an urgent and delicate manner.
When Balassar mentioned "sharing a drink" earlier Wash said, "A drink would go down very well. We never made it to the Ironheart’s Rest did we? Let's head there after we finish up, the first three rounds are on me."
After getting the message from Jent Horick, Wash says "I promise to still shout a few rounds, but are you all happy to escort me to the Goldcannon Estate first? Bririck would not have sent if it was not indeed urgent."
[DM: Can I have retroactively spent some of my starting money on alcohol, which I have stored at Goldcannon Estate? Totally cool if not.]
Alton looks over at Balassar and jokes, "You're never going to get that drink, are you." Gathering up his things, Alton gets ready to head out. "Does this Goldcannon have a cannon made of gold? Or is it a cannon that shoots gold? Oh! Or maybe a gold cannon that shoots gold! Also, can we make a stop somewhere first, though it might be out of the way. I'd like to go to Firemarks."

It's now raining in the town of Hupperdook, and late in the afternoon. The madness of the night's celebrations will be upon you soon. Jent has, however, come prepared, an umbrella for each of you. You make your way through town, and up to Upper Hupperdook, a strangely subdued end to you adventure. At the gates of the Goldcannon Estate, Alton gets his first sight of the large house and gardens on the other side, an impressive show of wealth. Balassar, you've passed by here once or twice, though there's little to bring you to this part of town on a normal day. This is far from a normal day though.
You are shown inside, and your umbrellas and cloaks are taken from you and placed in a room to dry off. You are shown into a small room with chairs and sofas and a roaring fire; Wash, you know this room as the one where Goldcannon often welcomes guests, and you feel immediately relaxed by the familiar surroundings. It looks expensive, but not gaudy, and the furniture is old and well looked after. There are chairs of all shapes and sizes, ideal for goliaths, dragonborns, halflings and other folk, so you are able to get comfortable.
Master Goldcannon will be with you shortly. Please do wait and take the time to get comfortable, and excuse the delay, but official business detains him. With that, Jent excuses himself.
Some drinks and snacks are served, and then you are left alone. It seems your adventure is at an end. For the next half an hour, before Goldcannon joins you, you have a chance to talk about everything that has happened to you over the last days.
Wash excitedly points out the best snacks to eat "I take it neither of you are vegetarian or vegan? If that is correct, I strongly suggest the smoked eel pâté, it is much nicer than it sounds. If you are vegetarian, I suggest the grilled tomato cheek tarts. Bririck's personal cook is amazing..."Wash then catches himself and seems a bit embarrassed"I'm sounding very posh here, and I'm a bit embarrassed by that as I grew up eating bread, army rations and gruel - when I actually got to eat. It is just spending time in Upper Hupperdook has allowed me to experience some of the finer things in life. I think I do need to remember not to get drawn into this lifestyle too much, and not to just stay inside my comfort zone. That is in part why I've enjoyed the last few days with you both so much, it was the most excitement I've had since coming to Hupperdook. I thank you both for that."
Alton samples each of the snacks, because he thinks it is rude to not at least try a little bit of presented food, and takes one of the drinks as he gets comfortable. "That's okay Wash. This is my first time having fancy food. Food only got fancy back home when there was some celebration or holiday, but that is more feast fancy than snack fancy." He looks down at his drink as he thinks of his home and everyone back there, "I should write to them soon." He looks back up with a smile, "You have the money to live like this now from what we were given and found. I would not have thought that my first day in Hupperdook would have started the way it did. It was pretty exciting, huh." Alton raises his drink, "To us and our first successful adventure; and hopefully many more to come. Cheers!"

Balassar just begins to chow down on any meat dish looking at the closet person who looks like they could get him something "Do you have a barrel of ale or mead?"
Wash is very excited about learning something about their new small flying travel companion and makes a mental note it is vegetarian, good to know. Nub then grabs some savoury vegetarian canapes and holds them in one hand and some grapes (or similar sized fruit) and holds them in the other and sees which the creature goes for first.
He also asks it with his mind you seemed to put images in my mind before, can you understand me when I speak with my mind? If so, please fly to my other shoulder. If there is no reaction Wash then focusses on an image of the creature flying from one of his shoulders to the other and a big smile coming onto Wash's face. Wash then waits to see if there is a reaction to this and regardless of whether there is a reaction he will then say to the creature in common "you seemed to understand me when I spoke earlier. I'm just trying all this out to see how best to communicate with you, to find out how you came to be captured by that drow and how we can help you get back to your home if that is where you are hoping to return to. How is the best way to communicate with you?"
After any conversation with the creature Wash then looks at Alton and Balassar and a sombre expression comes over his face, "I know that we are not allowed to discuss this with the public, but while we are alone, I need to say - I'm extremely concerned that the agents of Xhorhas were able to infiltrate so far west into the Marrow Valley and appear to be willing to escalate the animosity between our empires to all out war. I have witnessed the horrors of the minor border conflicts between the Kryn and Dwendalian military first hand, patching up far too many soldiers that were horrifically injured and helping to bury far too many dead. I have seen the sorrow and heartache on the faces of loved ones when we have had to inform them that their family member is dead. I was hoping that things had calmed down along the border and that peace was truly in our future, but it looks like there are forces that are looking to spark an all out war and I dread to imagine what that would look like."
