Cala pales. Death? She does not want to kill this goliath, but if she is dangerous, then someone should try and get her. And Calasseus knows she is capable. The idea of doing a good dead for the Crownsguard of this town stirs something within her, like a purpose that she did not know she had until very recently. Besides, she could use the money. Getting to Hupperdook had not been cheap. She gives a firm nod to the guard. "I would like to help as well," she decides firmly, the rush from battle boosting her confidence.
She then takes Wash's hand and gives it a polite shake. "I'm Cala."
Alton thinks about the offer for a minute and nods looking at the Watchmaster, "I'll help out too. This could make for an exciting adventure to tell later." Alton shakes Wash's hand, "I'm Alton Wildcloak, aspiring storyteller. Nice to meet you Wash." He turns his attention to the dragonborn and holds out his hand, "It is nice to meet you too, mister..."

The Watchmaster seems pleased. I pride myself on being a good judge of character, and I hope I will be proved right on you all. I have a good feeling about you. Well, you're acting on behalf of the city, so please take these. He reaches into a leather pouch at his waist and brings out four small object, then he hands each of you a copper and gold badge. This will identify you as an agent of the city - not a Crownsguard, just a representative - and should help with your investigation. Be warned - if you attempt to use it for anything other that official lawful business, word will get back to me faster than you can say "Five years in the Gearhole", which is what you'll get for breaking trust with me. I hope that's clear.
Now, do you have any questions before you get underway?
You did see that only four corpses remained, though those with explosive devices still attached would be gory splatters by now. You don't necessarily know that they're kobolds, but any of you can make a Nature check, Balassar with advantage, and it's not a high DC.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
[Yes, sorry, me as a player knows but I wasn’t indicating that Wash necessarily knew what they were. I will roll to check if he does, though it won’t change what he asks the Watchmaster though. Nature5 ]
Wash asks the watchmaster "Did any of the creatures survive and is there any other information you can tell us to help us with this?
[skill]Persuasion[skill/] if needed 5
[Ouch, I’m guessing with those rolls (nat 3 and nat 2) that I think kobalds are geckos or similar, and the Watchmaster isn’t telling me anything he wasn’t going to anyway. Even though I have a decent charisma, I might leave speech checks with Alton in the future.]
Cala speaks up from the back of the room. "I removed the explosive device from one of them so it would not be destroyed," she offers. She had done so as to ensure that the hooded man wouldn't be killed, but now she isn't sure if he was already dead or not when she got there. "I can show you which one if you want to look at it, Dr. Wash."
There are four kobolds confirmed dead, says the Watchmaster. Wash, you've heard of kobolds but thought they were some kind of rat-like vermin, and you're surprised that these creatures, capable of speech, were kobolds.
One escaped, four died. Two bodies were left intact, but the other two exploded. Damn explosive devices. What did they look like?
To Wash he adds, I don't know much more than you, to be honest. Perhaps you might get something useful from the prison guards who were supposed to be keeping the goliath under lock and key. He scowls again. Last thing we need at the moment, some enemy spy running around.
Balassar, you've seen kobolds before. You know that mostly they are untrustworthy and vicious, and looked on as vermin within the Empire. They are common in Xhorhas, and used as shock troops in their armies.
Alton looks around the room at the people he just met. "Well it looks like we have a lot of options on where to start our investigation. Where do you all think we should start?" Alton asks the Watchmaster directly, "Mr. Watchmaster, do you know anything about this Sken Zabriss or maybe someone who does that we can talk with?"

Wash listens for the Watchmaster to answer Alton’s question, seeming very happy for someone else to take the lead.
Wash (as silently as possible to not interrupt the conversation) takes off his work backpack and splits the first aid kit he always carries into four smaller kits of bandages, salves, and splints, puts three lots into sacks and hands them to his new companions, waiting until a break in conversation to say "This Sken and her kobald (??) friend seem quite dangerous, and I’m a big believer in always being prepared, so I’d like to give you all these. My share of the 500 gold will allow me to restock medical supplies later, and I’d prefer each of us has a first aid kit at hand in case of an emergency".
[Fen hands over a healer’s kits (3lb weight each) in a sack (0.5lb weight each) to each of the party. The sack is mostly flavour/RP, as I thought Wash would not necessarily carry x number of separate kits, but would always have plenty of medical supplies on hand. That said, mechanically the sacks should also allow people to carry the kits on their belts for easy access (if someone goes down and I’m not close by or I need to access them to help one of you), and the sacks might be useful for carrying things later when backpacks are full too. I’ll remove them from my inventory unless someone refuses the kit being offered. I can also keep track of uses for each kit (Steve - I hope this is ok - I enabled home brew items just so I could add in surrogate kits with 10 use-check boxes, to make keeping track of uses easier).]
Cala takes the healer's kit from Wash, thanking him quietly. She does not seem uncomfortable with such supplies. She swings her small backpack off of her shoulders to slip it inside, and you can see that her pack is not very full. Cala doesn't have many belongings. She ties her things back up and straightens, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. The Crownsgaurd badge in her pocket weighs heavily. "Perhaps we should go and look at the prison," she suggests softly. "They might have a better idea of where this woman might be headed."
(OOC: The Healer's Kit seems fine. I've added one to everyone's character sheets - meaning I had to enable homebrew content, so please be aware of that and don't add anything else without running it by me. :) Who's Fen?)
The Watchmaster nods his head. The prison is likely the best place to start. Keep your badges with you, and don't be afraid to show them. The prison guards will be wary I reckon; thinking you're looking to pin the blame for this on them. He shakes his head. Maybe. But there's more to this, I have a feeling about it. Good luck to you.
A Crownsguard knocks at the door, and the Watchmaster sighs. Best you head off now. I've got to reassure some panicking civilians that this isn't the end of the world. He and the other guard walk out into the rest of the tavern and start to speak to a gathered group of people.
Balassar looks at the group and just nods "Ruined my ale time - though I guess a good fight can make up for it." he says just hitting his fist into his palm. As the group decides on their course of action he just nods "Either sounds good to me."
Wash says to the group "I agree that we should make the first stop the prison, though I probably need to let my friend I sent a message to not to worry. Are you happy for me to meet you at the prison shortly?"
[If none of the party objects and that is where they are going, DM, is it ok if I just summarise what I’m planning. I’m happy to RP more of it and am fine if there are DM intrusions to change what happens or if something stops me from notifying Bririck at all, but if not I don’t want to bog the game down in solo RP stuff.
Wash heads to the Goldcannon Manor, looking for Bririck along the way. If/when he finds Bririck he lets him know "I’ve stumbled upon some excitement and have been asked by Watchmaster to help investigate. I don’t know how much I can tell you.." (then tells Bririck everything he knows) and says "I think this is exactly what I need now to get me out of my recent work rut. You know I’ll always appreciate everything you have done for me... including all the rich relatives you send my way to treat their bumps, bruises and remove their warts" (Wash winks and jingles his coin purse) "but I think I’ll temporarily stop treating from the clinic and will see where this excitement takes me. If anyone comes calling for me, I can highly recommend [DM: assume I’ve said the name of the second best medical practitioner in town here] and I’ll be back once this is all done with."
If no DM intrusions, Wash then goes and meets the rest of the party at the prison (or if they have said before he leaves that they are going somewhere else, he goes there). Steve, can you let me know when I arrive back to the party?]
Wash, you head off, having promised to rejoin the party later. You find Bririck, and he is pleased to see that you are safe, worried at the news of a prison break, and supportive of your decision to co-operate with the Crownsguard in protecting the town.
Alton, Baltasar and Cala, you leave the tavern and head towards the prison. It’s easy to see the metallic sheen of many tall steel plates affixed to the mountainside—the outer walls of Gearhole Prison. The day's fading sunlight, and the still-smoldering fires frame the billowing smoke that pours from a gaping cavity in the rock and metal, marking the violent escape route taken by the goliath and her accomplices. Both the prison's main gate and the newly-created hole are guarded by Crownsguard, a typical mix of dwarves and gnomes who eye you suspiciously as you approach.
(OOC: So far, Wash is away on his errand, and it will take some time for him to make it back to you.)
Balassar just looks over to the hole as he goes over to inspect it showing his badge to the guards "Any idea of wut caused t'is? Black powder or magic?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Alton will thank the Watchmaster for the information as they leave. Seeing Balassar head in the direction of the hole in the wall, he will make his way over to the prison's main gate. Pulling the badge he acquired out, Alton shows it to the guards saying, "Greetings, I'm Alton and was hired by the Watchmaster, along with my new friends, to help investigate what happened here. Would it be possible to speak with the warden of this prison? I just want to ask them some questions if that is alright. If they are busy perhaps the guards that recently patrolled that area of the prison." Alton points over in the directions of the hole in the wall.
