[ooc] you beat me to it. I was going to try opening the door.
If Ryona is unable to open the door, Yevele will ask someone if she can borrow a dagger and try to pry the pins out of the hinges (assuming they are visible on this side of the door).
"Just whatever comes to mind..." Jarnick murmurs, looking at his shield. If Ryona fail to open the door, Jarnick will put his weight onto his shield and ram himself into the door. (Edit: before someone lends Yevele a dagger, if possible.)
Strength: 19 Athletic: 11 ( I think it should be 5+2 instead)
"Very true, my dearest," Malfearance says looking at empty space but then turning to the rest of his companions. "A key could easily be misplaced in ones own pocket if one wishes it not to be found. I suspect this test is more about brute force than our ability to find a lost item. Each moment lost is food stores wasted, I believe speed is valued more than ingenuity. I suggest breaking the door down and being done with it. She can easily make our next task fixing the door."
Malfearance steps to the wall furthest from the door at question, not looking to be the one cutting their shoulder to the door. "Perhaps one of the heartier types has a crowbar? I believe I left mine under my bed..."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As the rest of the group gathers around the door, Noah pushes himself up off the floor, dusting himself off. Hesitantly, he unsheathes one of the daggers on his belt, handing it over to Yevele.
"Do be cautious not to damage the edge. Luckily, I do have a crowbar on hand." Noah digs around in his pack for a few moments before extracting a slightly rusted steel crowbar. He brushes past the others to the door and attempts to force it open.
Strength (advantage due to leverage from crowbar): 18
After Elaria's answer, Falenas says "Yes master, we'll be swift" and he quickly goes to get his gear and gather with the rest of the group.
"I like Yevele's plan, I will stay in the rear and be wary of anything that could come out of that door, using a crowbar will probably catch the rats' attention, but it's the fastest solution that I can think of. We also may need a light source, I have no problem with the dark, but some of you could use help"
He'll watch Yevele and Noah from a distance and be ready to shoot an Eldritch Blast if anything aggresive comes out. "There's still the barricade, so I don't expect anything to happen, but one can never be too cautious".
OOC: For clarity's sake, Elaria did not follow you, she's still at the dining table.
Ryona tries the handle and finds that the door is indeed locked. The door proves sturdier than Jarnick, as it barely budges against the halfling's weight. As Yevele gets to work with a dagger, Noah slides the crowbar between the gap in the door's hinge, and forces it open with a loud crack. The force busts the lock, but the door remains intact.
The heavy smell of giant rat dung hits you square in the face as the door swings open. A scamper of feet can be heard as rodents the size of golden retrievers run back and forth at the opposite end of the room amid gnawed-open crates, barrels, and bags of food. Between you and the rats is a line of boxes, the barricade set up by Elaria to keep the rodents on the far side of the room.
Noah cringes as the door creaks open and stuffs away his crowbar.
"Gods, that smell is absolutely putrid. I suppose now it's out of the frying pan and into the bathhouse - if you front-line fighters can lure the rats to concentrating in one area I will try to cut them down from a range with spells."
He grins, equal part nervous and exhilarated to finally experience their first live encounter. He draws his wand into one hand and a dagger into the other. The fledgling sorcerer knows he will never be able to forgive himself if his first attempt at adventure is thwarted by a group of fat rodents, and so steels himself for a taste of combat.
"Well, what are we waiting for?"
Noah cautiously and slowly steps towards the barricade, allowing those of the party more equipped for melee combat to overtake him.
(OOC Edit: Is the basement well lit for the humans of the party?)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Maelfearance watches from the far side of the room but still reflexively flinches when the door finally swings open with a loud crack. He quickly scans the revealed scene behind the door to assess the situation, even as his nose wrinkles in distaste of the newly added scent.
"Sleep like the dead," Mael says before muttering some more arcane words under his breath and sweeping his staff slowly in front of him, pointing it at the rats. ((Maelfearance casts Sleep on the room full of unusually large rodents. He attempts to center the spell 10 feet behind the barricade that had been set up so as to catch only the rodents with the spell effects. This puts to sleep 19 HP of them...)). "Be careful of the boxes, Elaria's words earlier seemed to suggest they may be tricky. And do try not to budge the beasts, they are light sleepers."
"Mmm..."Jarnick still recovering from the painful impact from ramming into the door, with a couple of deep breaths, he manages to shrug it off.
He turns back at the now opened doorway, his blood pulses through his vein, he doesn't mind the smell, he's now focused on killing some rodents and test his skill.
Upon hearing Noah's word, Jarnick was ready to rush in, but seeing Mael's action and comment , he looks at the party and decides to wait and see if anyone has an idea better than to just storm the room.(If no one does he will go it with Yevele)
She holds her free hands to her face to cover her nose while narrowing her eyes to the odor. She approaches alongside Noah, stopping right up to the boxes with her hand lightly placed on them. ((If there is insufficient light, she waits until someone casts Dancing Lights or Light to see past the barricade)) Looking between the holes of the barricade, she attempts to count them even as Maelferance's spell takes hold.
Perception: 14"I see __ of them. __ of them went to sleep, Maelfearance."
If she can see one that did not go to sleep:
She raises a hand to grasp her amulet, feet spread and raising her head slightly while she speaks, eyes locked on the rat. She castsSacred Flame (DC 14) with a hint of anger in her voice. "Banish the shadow." With a soft chime sound, a flash of light brightens the room, shining in the cracks of the barricade.
Regardless, Ryona firmly grabs one of the boxes at the bottom, first getting a feel for how hard it is to move. (She can push/pull up to 420 pounds) "Don't open it yet- let's to pull it open together, big enough for one of us. Jarnick, be ready. We'll let him go first with his weapon ready."
As everyone else, Falenas reacts with disgust as the smell hits him. If the room doesn't have enough light for Ryona to see, he will quietly get closer to the barricade and try to assess how many rats are there and how many are asleep. Perception :9
After relaying the information he also says: "Whenever we're ready to attack I can make the sound of a lion's roar. That may frighten the rats that are still awake and give us some edge in the battle. Maybe even Noah can add some visuals to accompany the illusion"
Falenas will be ready to cast Minor Illusion as soon as the battle starts.

Once the door is open, Yevele wrinkles her nose in disgust at the small and then returns the dagger to Noah. After Malfearance casts his spell, Yevele will head into the room and up to the crates.

From the top of the boxes, she will survey the scene below her, and, if the boxes seem sturdy enough, hold her quarter staff out for anyone else to climb up on the boxes with her.

As you begin to step into the room, while Maelfearance begins the intricate movements and vocalizations of his spell, two rats emerge from small holes that have been gnawed through the barricade of crates and barrels. They hiss and attack.
OOC: Initiative has been rolled the moment the rats appear through the barricade, which is the moment that Noah steps into the room and Maelferance begins casting the sleep spell. The giant rats' average was higher than the party's average, so they will act as a group first, followed by the party acting as a group.
From a glance (without needing any further Perception or Investigation actions), the crates appear to be climbable and sturdy enough to hold weight, though at an uncomfortable height. In the rush of combat, this will require an Athletics check.

Maelfearance completes his spell in almost that same moment. Two of the four rats behind the barricade suddenly slump over into unconsciousness.

Noah yelps as the rat sinks its teeth into him, and as soon as he is able to tear his bleeding forearm away from the jaws of the giant rodent, he watches as Jarnick swoops in to engage his assailant. He nods in appreciation to Jarnick. Still wincing in pain, Noah glances around for a new target, frenzied by the fresh blood seeping from the bite wound.
Noah raises the tip of his wand to the rat Ryona and Yevele are engaged with, and shouting an incantation in Draconic, casts Ray of Frost.

Jarnick moves swiftly, skewering the rat cleanly through the heart before it can cause any further damage to Noah, whose ray of frost misses its mark, dissipating onto the barricade behind it. Yevele swats the rat with her staff hard enough to move it out of her kicking range, and Ryona seizes the opportunity, pulverizing the creature's head with her mace. Falenas leaps, pulling himself atop a crate. As the remaining conscious rats skitter toward the openings in the crates, he slams one with a blast of pure arcane energy.
Both rats emerge from the holes angered and hungry, but such simple creatures are no match for the defensive prowess of the front line that Jarnick and Ryona have formed. While they futilely try to chomp into the pair, Maelfearance strikes one with a blast of his own.
