From what Midian can make out of the murmuring coming from the nearest people in the crowd, they seem to be praying, but praying to different gods. He can hear the names Liluri and Tauron, which are two of the common pagan gods worshipped by the Stemians in this part of the country.
OOC: Does Midian know of a “back entrance” to the temple? Another way in that’s not so public?
[OOC: If you look at the rough map of Constantine on the Magudonya home page on the World Anvil site, you will see that the Temple Ward is on the southern shore of the main island. The entrance to the Ward is on the northern side and so there are aren't likely to be 'back' entrances that are approachable without a boat. Midian is aware of other entrances to the Temple Ward, but they wouldn't allow the passage of the carriage. FYI, the Temple Ward contains three Mithran temples and one shrine. The temples belong to Mithra, Aieda and Donai while the shrine is to Oannes, the sea god. The Ward also has a number of residences for senior temple officials and is where the Bank of Sorenden and a couple of other Sorendenese businesses have their offices.]
Midian feels the carriage shift under him and he looks around to see Handleader Samswell hanging off the side of the cabin so he can speak with Priestess Aloma.
"We should go to the dock below the riverside of the Temple, Priestess," Midian hears him say. "We will have to carry your passenger up the stairs, but we'll avoid this crowd that way."
He then looks at something behind Midian and then points in that direction and says, "Apprentice Voda, stop that carriage, we will need to back ours up."
Looking back the way they have come, Midian sees a carriage heading in their direction at a brisk trot.

Midian promptly hops of their carriage, holding out a hand to half the other approaching carriage, wary of a trap, a second carriage sent to hem them in. He nods to Samswell and shouts in a commanding tone, “Stop! Halt your carriage and back up.” He tries to appraise whether this looks a cheap carriage, a commercial transport, or carries signs of nobility.
Despite the dim light, the approaching vehicle does start to slow as Midian holds up his hand and calls for the one-horse trap to stop. [Trap as in a light carriage :-) ]
"Whoa there," says the driver in Stemian, pulling back hard on the reins to stop his vehicle just yards from Midian. "What's happening?" He calls out. "Why are you stopped in the middle of the road like this? I could have run into you."

The dimness of the surroundings makes it difficult for Midian to see. As his language would indicate, the man appears to be a Stemian. The vehicle he is driving is a small carriage, with a light load covered by some sort of tarpaulin.
"I say," says the man before repeating his question: "What's happening? Why are we all stopped?"
He sounds like he is in a bit of a hurry.

"There's a crowd up ahead blocking the way, neither of our carriages will be able to pass. You'll need to back up yours, and we'll back up ours," Midian says, finding it amusing that all his training has led to 'traffic control' normally suited to a city constable. "Otherwise both of us are stuck."

There is enough room in the street to turn the carriage but Midian is close enough to the horse's head to see she is looking a bit skittish.

Midian steps in and grabs the horse's bridle and then leads it round as the driver pulls on the appropriate rein.
The horse eyes Midian nervously but between the two of them the carriage is turned without problem.
"Thank you, lad," says the man. "I am in a bit of hurry." He then slaps the reins of his horse and moves off at a trot.
Midian turns to see that Handleader Samswell has also gotten down off their carriage and is in the process of assisting the driver to turn their larger carriage around, which they do without problem.
Soon, Midian is seated once more on the back of the carriage as it retraces it path for a short distance before taking a turn westward and heading down towards the river. It turns east when it reaches the waterfront and once more starts heading back in the direction of the Temple Ward.
Along this road, there are various small landings and jetties for the residences and businesses but these peter out when the road reaches the temples themselves, the first being the Temple of Aieda where there is a small cluster of buildings devoted to the receiving of food and other goods by boat. These buildings are currently in darkness, but Midian knows that there are ways into the Temple proper.
The carriage pulls to a stop and Handleader Samswell immediately swings down off the front seat to talk to the priestess in the carriage.
"I'll go arrange for a stretcher," Midian hears the man say before he starts to move off.

Midian first thought that the area was deserted but he then notices another carriage at the end of the road, a couple of hundred feet away. This strikes him as unusual as the only thing at the end of the road is the mechanism that draws river water up to the shrine of Oannes where it is purified to provide water for the cistern in the middle of the main square of the Temple Ward.
"Excuse me," says the driver, looking at Midian. "But the man who just left promised me a Constantine for this little nighttime jaunt. Do I talk to you about getting my coin?"

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Midian doesn’t care for this distraction and he is entirely readied for some sort of treachery. He thinks quickly and, assuming his read is that the carriage driver is sincere enough (Midian will roll Insight if needed) he infers the cab driver has been given cryptic instructions with promise of payment, and may be part of a ruse to distract or ambush their group. Accordingly Midian plays along, adding nonsense and a new order to clear the carriage out, and tries to get rid of him. “Yes, but your work isn’t over. Take this Constantine and immediately drive to the scholar’s ward. Now. Go. You’ll receive another Constantine at the end of it. Tell him ‘the blue rose flourishes in the moonlight.’ Those exact words. Hurry now, go.”
The driver accepts the silver coin Midian gives him [OOC: I have deducted this from Midian's character sheet] and then listens to what Midian has to say before asking, "Where in the Scholar's Ward? And tell who? You'll have to give me better instructions, young sir."
Before Midian can say anything, Priestess Aloma calls out from the cabin. "Midian, I need your help. We need to get her out of the carriage."

"Just go, back the way you came, immediately," Midian says dismissively. "Figure it out, ask directions. Hurry or your night's profit is over." He immediately returns to Aloma, then adds, "Go!" to the carriage driver, and goes to aid Aloma, watching as he does to ensure the carriage departs.
