Although Midian simply knocked and announced their approach for lack of another means to enter, he is still very guarded about the whole scenario, and surveys the women within closely to confirm their are not concealing any aggressive intentions towards himself, Aloma and Aeda.
When the three women see the state of the avatar, they cluster around her and Priestess Aloma trying to be helpful.
[OOC: As far as Midian can tell, their concern and actions seem to be genuine.]
"We need to take her to see the Mother," says Priestess Aloma to the women directing them into the Temple.
As she and the women start leading the avatar into the temple, Priestess Aloma turns back to Midian and says, "Find Handleader Samswell, he should be here, but he's not."

“Indeed he should, but strange their are afoot this evening, priestess,” Midian says. “I would like to confirm the avatar is secured and that whatever threats have made entry to the temple do not strike out at her, or you. Try to rouse more guards, more priests or priestesses, as soon as you can. This is a momentous event, and a day of unrest. If our foes are going to strike at us, this will be the time.”
OOC: If Midian is fairly certain the intruders would not have been able to get through the door locked and sealed from the inside that they came through, he will conclude that Aloma and Aeda should expect relatively safe passage going forward, and more likely whomever entered using thieves tools is hiding in one of the rooms he passed back the way they came from. If this is not correct on my understanding of the layout, let me know.

Midian goes back to investigate the side doors he passed earlier.
[OOC: We will do this after the result of the previous roll have been determined. He will also need some form of light source to do this.]
Priestess agrees with Midian's suggestions with a nod of her head before she and the rest of the women disappear inside with the avatar.
Midian is, for the moment, alone in the courtyard.

Firstly, Midian investigates the door they just passed through for any signs that is has been breached or tampered with.
Investigation: 19
Assuming he finds no signs of a breach, Midian looks for a nearby torch or lantern to borrow, asking the present staff members where he might find one, before he goes to investigate the side doors they passed.
If he does detect tampering, he will instead bring it to Aloma's attention, as that might indicate threats here or further within, in which case he would stay close to her and the avatar.
Although the locking mechanism for the door is the same as for the outside building (i.e., just a bar on the inside) the bar on this side has a safety latch that has to be removed before it can be lifted, which makes it much harder to get through. An investigation of the sides of the door and the door jamb also show no recent attempts to slip anything through the gap like there were on the previous door. This leaves Midian convinced that no one has passed through this door without being let in by someone on the inside.
Looking around for a light source, the most obvious one is the eternal flame mounted on the wall. Like many such flames in Mithran Temples it can be fairly easily taken down. He does so and now has a cold fire torch in his hand.

Midian takes the cold fire torch, using its eternal flame to light his path as he retraces his steps to examine both of the prior doors they passed on the way in. He first listens at each one, and examines for signs of recent entry, disturbed dust, etc., before checking the one closest to the entrance to the temple proper that Aloma and Aeda passed through, the one further from the outside entrance, and checks to see if it is locked, before opening it.
Perception to listen for sounds within: 15
Investigation to look for signs of entry: 9
Survival to look for footprints or disturbances near each of the doors: 12
[OOC: Now that the avatar and Priestess Aloma aren't involved, I am going to macro through the search of the building to save time.
You can make a second roll for experience for the Investigation check.]
The rooms that were previously bypassed are a small storeroom containing tools used by the people who normally work in this building and a small lunchroom, both of which are empty.
The outer building is in a well-kept state and so there is little chance to find footprints. In fact, the only sign that anyone has been here outside of normal working hours is the door to the outside that Midian found open.
[OOC: Midian finds no sign of Handleader Samswell inside the building. Do you want to have him continue the search outside.]

OOC: To confirm, Midian did locate signs of tampering with the outside door, nothing in the rooms between that and the the door leading further in that opened from the inside, and no sign that door had been tampered with? So essentially signs that someone tampered with the outside door, made entry, then possibly gave up and left? That seems to be what he would make of it at present.

Midian peers back outside, looking for the boatman.
Opening the door to the outside, Midian can see along the length of the building to the road, and beyond it, the river. However, from this location, there is no sight of the fishing boat with the two fishermen in it that he saw before.
It hasn't been that long since he saw them, so it is most likely that the building is blocking his vision and he will need to go back outside and walk the 50 or so feet to the road to be able to see them again.

Midian begins by peering about the immediate area before wandering far out in search for any pursuers or lurkers that might be observing him.

If he sees nothing, after going back to make sure the way further in is sealed with the door that closes from the inside, Midian will return and venture out to search for Samswell. He would begin by returning to the area where the boat and fisherman were seen.

[OOC: Just to check. Midian wants to go back to the door that leads into the Temple proper and try to drop the bar of the door into place as he closes it, thereby sealing himself out of the Temple. Is that correct? Midian's estimation of the difficulty of re-opening of this door with his Thieves Tools is equivalent to the check having a DC of 16.]

[OOC: As I said in move #644, Midian was left alone when Priestess Aloma and the other women took the avatar inside. He then took away the only light source nearby to the door to help with his search for the handleader. I presumed at the time that he would have left the door into the Temple proper open so that he would be able to get back in. This is why I queried what he was doing.
He could contrive to bar the door behind him, but it would then be difficult to get back in. He could, of course, try to find someone to bar the door after him and then wait for him to come knocking when he finishes his search. But he would have to find that person as there was no one left outside when he began his search.]

OOC: I am probably just having trouble following the layout without a visual aid. Based on what he’s encountered, it seemed if Samswell went missing it would have to be somewhere outside or the people who let him and Aloma and Aeda into the temple would have seen him enter. I am assuming, then, that he would logically need to look for Samswell outside? The prior actions were to confirm whether anyone had entered the temple, given the tampered door. I’m currently assuming that has been ruled out, that no one entered the temple to the best of his knowledge and Samswell is likely somewhere outside still?

Midian only has the door locked behind him if someone was going to be standing by to let him back in. Given that that is not the case, he leaves it open as he goes outside to canvass the immediate area, searching for the Handleader.
Using the eternal flame, Midian closely scrutinises the ground outside, but apart from the occasional, small, bare smudged footprint that he assumes belongs to the avatar, he can find no footprints that he can specifically say belong to Handleader Samswell.
However as he approaches the front of the building, he catches sight of the small boat with the fishermen in it that he saw before. As he watches on, he can see in the light of their lantern that one of the men is pulling in a small anchor while the other is waiting with oars at the ready.
